The official feature list confirms these options, but does not provide a complete control-by-control walkthrough, and exact inputs may vary by platform.
What the expanded Photo Mode can do
CD PROJEKT RED’s September 28, 2026 patch notes describe a substantially expanded Photo Mode UI and list these tools:

- Add characters to a shot, then select poses and expressions for Geralt and characters placed in the scene.
- Adjust the camera, switch to a first-person view through Geralt’s eyes, and toggle collisions with objects and walls.
- Lock the camera position and save or reuse camera presets that include position and angle.
- Apply environment presets and set the weather, time of day, and weather intensity, including the strength of rain or storms.
- Choose a screenshot aspect ratio, show Rule of Thirds guides, and optionally add cinematic black bars.
- View the camera’s coordinates in the UI and confirm before exiting Photo Mode.
The notes establish that these options exist; they do not specify every menu or button sequence on each platform. Treat the workflow below as a suggested way to combine the documented tools, not as a verified in-game tutorial.
A practical workflow for staging a shot
1. Decide what the image should show
Start with a simple goal: a close character portrait, a group scene, a landscape with a small figure, or a more dramatic tableau. This helps determine whether you need to place additional characters, change the aspect ratio, or prioritize the environment over faces.
#1 Best Overall
- Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity.
- Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world.
2. Place characters and choose their expressions
Use the character-placement options to add available characters to the scene. Then select poses and expressions for Geralt and the characters you place. For a portrait, keep the expression and pose aligned with the mood you want; for a group image, consider how the figures relate to one another and to the background.
3. Compose with the camera
Choose an aspect ratio to suit the intended image. Rule of Thirds lines can help position a face or horizon away from the center; cinematic bars can create a wider, film-like frame. Switch to first-person camera mode when seeing through Geralt’s eyes serves the composition. If you are iterating on a scene, lock the camera or save a preset so you can return to the same position and angle.
4. Set the environment and weather
Choose an environment preset, then adjust the time of day and weather. Weather intensity lets you tune conditions such as rain or storms. If a wall or object obstructs the camera while you place it, try changing the collision setting; the patch notes confirm that camera collisions can be turned on or off.
5. Capture the image and locate it
Capture using your platform’s screenshot controls. CD PROJEKT RED’s Photo Mode support page gives older, pre-Remastered guidance for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, but does not cover Switch 2. Because that page predates the Remastered release, treat its shortcut and folder details as legacy reference rather than a guarantee for every current version.
Rank #2
- If you buy this game, you will receive a free next-gen update on December 14th!
- Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.
- PC: The legacy support page lists U to activate Photo Mode and
%userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3screenshotsas the screenshot folder. - PlayStation: The legacy page lists L3 + R3 to activate Photo Mode. It gives the capture location as Settings → Storage → System Storage → Capture Gallery → The Witcher 3.
- Xbox: The legacy page lists LS + RS to activate Photo Mode and Xbox button → Capture & share → Recent captures for captures.
- Switch 2: The Remastered patch notes confirm touch-screen input in Photo Mode, but do not document a complete control map or capture-gallery path. Use the console’s current capture gallery and consult current in-game or platform help if the interface differs.
Platforms, access, and upgrade context
The Remastered release arrived September 29, 2026, for PC (Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, and Battle.net), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The patch notes say previous physical or digital purchasers can upgrade free within the same platform ecosystem. The official launch announcement specifies free upgrades for eligible owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S; for Switch 2, it describes the free upgrade for people who own the original Switch game. Check the offer for your specific platform rather than assuming eligibility is identical everywhere. The announcement says the Remastered package includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.
The launch-era overview by Marta Piwońska, Expert PR Manager at CD PROJEKT RED, described the update as an “Expanded photo mode” with new poses, camera controls, frames, filters, models, and more in an Xbox Wire article published August 25, 2026. The later patch notes give the more specific feature inventory above. On Switch 2, the patch notes also confirm touch input in menus, dialogue, the world map, Gwent, and Photo Mode; they do not map every Photo Mode action to touch controls.
What the official feature list does not tell you
- It does not provide a full control map or exact menu sequence for every platform.
- It does not establish that Photo Mode controls or features are identical across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2.
- It does not confirm that the older activation shortcuts or capture paths work unchanged in Remastered.
For those details, use current in-game prompts and each platform’s capture gallery. The game’s built-in feature list does not indicate that third-party camera gear is required for in-game screenshots.
