That distinction matters: owning the game does not, by itself, establish that a particular copy is eligible.
Is The Witcher 3 Remastered a free upgrade?
Yes, for owners on qualifying platforms. CD PROJEKT RED’s current product page states: “Upgrade to Remastered for free if you own The Witcher 3 on qualifying platforms.” The FAQ lists the supported upgrade platforms, but does not define every qualifying edition, region, or storefront purchase.

What does the Remastered page say has changed?
CD PROJEKT RED’s current product page describes improvements and additions across several parts of the game:
- Visuals: improved environment, NPC, and monster textures; foliage improvements; reworked lighting and rendering; and ray tracing.
- Combat and presentation: revamped animations, new finishers, and an adaptive camera.
- Progression: an overhauled skill tree.
- Customization and immersion: cross-platform mod support, transmogrification, realistic light and shadow, and immersive meditation.
- Photography: an expanded photo mode.
These are the publisher’s descriptions of the Remastered release, not independent performance measurements. The current page does not provide a like-for-like benchmark or detailed performance targets for each platform.

How is Remastered different from the 2022 next-gen update?
The names refer to different official materials. CD PROJEKT RED’s current product page presents The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered as a current release. Separately, the publisher issued a version 4.0 next-gen update in December 2022. Its December 12, 2022 changelog documents that update’s features and platform-specific notes. Details from those 2022 notes should not be treated as verified specifications for the current Remastered build.

Its listed technical details included:
Rank #3
- Ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion on PC and next-gen consoles; compatible PC hardware could additionally use ray-traced reflections and shadows.
- PC-only Ultra+ graphics settings and DLSS 3 support on compatible hardware.
- On PS5 and Xbox Series X, a ray-tracing mode targeting 30 FPS and a performance mode targeting 60 FPS, with dynamic resolution scaling. On Xbox Series S, the quality mode targeted 30 FPS and the performance mode 60 FPS, without ray tracing.
- PS5 DualSense adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.
- Cross-progression after account sign-in, photo mode, the option to pause during cutscenes, a closer adaptive camera, Quick Sign Casting, and map and HUD options.
- Additional quest and Netflix-inspired content, alternate looks, and Chinese and Korean voice-over; console voice-over availability varied by region.
Those frame-rate figures are targets stated in the 2022 changelog, not current measured results or confirmed Remastered targets. The changelog also cautioned that update scope could differ by platform.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the Complete Edition or expansion ownership prove upgrade eligibility?
No. The Complete Edition and expansion details answer different ownership questions from the Remastered upgrade promise. The publisher says the storefront base game has been replaced by the Complete Edition, save files remain compatible, Cross Progression remains functional, and expansion achievements and trophies are unaffected. It also says base-game owners can install Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine by updating to the latest version; on PS4 and Xbox One, the expansions are available to download for free. Existing expansion owners retain them in their libraries, with their content patched into the base game.
None of those FAQ statements identifies every edition that qualifies for Remastered. The publisher’s November 14, 2022 announcement of the then-upcoming next-gen update described a Complete Edition with the base game, enhancements, free DLC, and both expansions, and named digital PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC releases. It also said a physical release would follow. That is historical information about the 2022 Complete Edition, not evidence of a physical SKU for the newer Remastered release or current stock at a retailer.

What to check before claiming an upgrade
- Identify the platform where you own the game and confirm that it appears in the publisher’s current Remastered list: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch 2.
- Open the game’s library or store listing for that platform and check whether it shows an available Remastered upgrade or edition.
- If the listing is unclear, check CD PROJEKT RED’s current product and FAQ page and the platform’s support information. The publisher’s FAQ does not resolve eligibility for every legacy SKU or purchase channel.
