To store XRP or Bitcoin safely, first decide who should control access: a custodian such as an exchange, or you through your own private keys. Exchange custody is simpler to operate but depends on the provider’s security, solvency, and withdrawal policies. Self-custody removes that dependency but makes you responsible for protecting keys and recovery information; losing them can mean permanent loss.
What “storing” XRP and Bitcoin means
A wallet is an access tool for private keys; the assets themselves are recorded on their respective networks. The SEC’s investor bulletin, dated December 12, 2025, describes custody as the way users store and access crypto assets through private keys: SEC investor guidance on crypto custody. In practice, the custody choice determines who controls the keys or account access and who bears the operational risk.

Exchange custody vs. self-custody
| Decision | Exchange custody | Self-custody |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls access? | A third party holds or controls the keys or account access; you rely on its service and policies. | You control the private keys and access to the wallet. |
| Main responsibility | Assess the provider’s security, solvency, withdrawal rules, account security, and fees. | Safeguard keys and recovery information, make secure backups, verify transactions, and plan for device loss and inheritance. |
| What can go wrong? | A breach, provider failure, withdrawal restriction, or policy change can disrupt access. | Lost or exposed keys, compromised recovery information, user error, or inadequate backups can cause loss. An intermediary generally cannot restore control of a self-custodied wallet. |
| Security measures | Choose carefully and use strong multi-factor authentication where available. | Consider hardware or offline storage, secure backups, updates, and multi-signature arrangements where suitable. |
| XRP-specific point | XRPL documentation notes that private exchanges may hold customers’ XRP in shared accounts, avoiding individual account reserve requirements. | A separate XRP Ledger account has a reserve requirement, which can change over time. |
If you keep XRP or Bitcoin with an exchange
Convenience comes with dependence on the custodian: you need the service to protect assets and honor withdrawals. No general custody choice guarantees that a particular exchange is secure, solvent, insured, or available in your jurisdiction. The SEC advises asking how crypto is held and what fees apply to custody, transactions, transfers, account setup, and account closure.
- Research the provider and understand its withdrawal rules and account policies before depositing.
- Use strong multi-factor authentication where available, as Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance recommends.
- Keep your account credentials private and use the provider’s official support channels if you need help.
If you manage your own keys
With self-custody, the holder controls the private keys. That also means the holder must secure them and preserve recovery information. Bitcoin.org puts the trade-off plainly: “When you hold your own private keys, you control your bitcoin—but you are also responsible for keeping it secure.” If your device fails or is lost, a replacement can restore access only if you have safely preserved the recovery information and know how to use it.

Reduce the chance of losing access
- Make backups and keep them in secure locations. Avoid unencrypted online backups; use durable storage media and consider whether separate locations reduce the risk of a single loss.
- Keep recovery phrases and private keys private. Do not share them with anyone claiming to be support.
- Keep wallet software updated, while considering the software and dependency supply chain used by the wallet.
- Consider multi-signature only if you can manage its additional setup and recovery complexity; it can reduce reliance on a single key or location.
Hardware and offline wallets can reduce exposure to threats from internet-connected computers and phones, but they do not make funds risk-free. The device is only one part of the system: setup, updates, recovery backups, and careful handling still matter. For a physical wallet intended to hold both XRP and Bitcoin, verify current support for both assets, compatibility with official software and firmware, setup instructions, and the seller’s trustworthiness. A vendor’s compatibility page is product information, not independent testing.
XRP account reserves and secret keys
On the XRP Ledger, whoever holds the secret key corresponding to an account’s address controls that account and its XRP. XRPL distinguishes custodial wallets, where users manage service credentials, from non-custodial wallets, where users manage secret keys. Its wallet guidance also describes hardware wallets as isolating information from easier-to-compromise internet-connected devices.

For an individual XRP Ledger account, XRPL documentation states a current base reserve of 1 XRP. That is a point-in-time figure from the XRPL reserves documentation and account documentation; reserve settings can change through fee voting, so check the current documentation before creating or funding an account. Private exchanges may use shared accounts, so their customers may not face an individual account reserve in the same way.
Verify every transaction and beware of support scams
Before sending either asset, check the receiving address and transaction details carefully. Bitcoin.org warns that Bitcoin transactions are irreversible and says legitimate support will not ask for your seed phrase or private key. That warning is Bitcoin-specific here; it should not be treated as an explanation of XRP transaction rules. For either asset, never disclose secret recovery information to someone offering help.

How to choose between the two
- Exchange custody may suit you if you value simpler access and are comfortable relying on a provider’s security, solvency, and withdrawal policies.
- Self-custody may suit you if you can reliably protect keys and backups, verify transactions, and plan for device loss or future access by someone you trust.
- For XRP self-custody, account setup includes a reserve requirement; check XRPL’s current reserve documentation before acting.
Neither option removes risk. The better choice is the one whose access and recovery responsibilities you can manage consistently.
