Short answer: The Witcher 3’s 2022 Next-Gen update (version 4.0 and later builds) adds ray tracing on supported platforms, higher-detail visuals and expanded PC graphics settings compared with PC Classic version 1.32. Performance depends on platform and settings: PS5 and Xbox Series X offer a 30 FPS-target Ray Tracing mode or a 60 FPS-target Performance mode, while Xbox Series S has 30/60 FPS-target modes without ray tracing. Those figures are targets, not guaranteed frame rates.
This comparison is specifically between Classic 1.32 and the 2022 Next-Gen release. CD PROJEKT RED released a separate Remastered version on September 29, 2026, so check the build name before applying newer feature or performance claims to Next-Gen.

What is the difference between Witcher 3 Classic and next-gen?
“Classic” is CD PROJEKT RED’s label for version 1.32 on PC. The 2022 Next-Gen update began at version 4.0; later patches updated it further. Version 4.0 is a version number, not a reference to 4K. The publisher’s 2022 patch notes and technical support guidance establish the distinction.
The main difference is that Next-Gen adds visual features and options rather than one uniform upgrade across all devices. PC and current-generation consoles received ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion; compatible PCs also have optional ray-traced reflections and shadows. The update includes higher-resolution character textures, environmental refinements and selected community-mod or mod-inspired improvements. Console features vary by model, and PC features depend on hardware and settings.

Lighting, reflections and shadows
Ray-traced global illumination changes how indirect light is represented, while ray-traced ambient occlusion adds contact shading. On PC, compatible hardware can also enable ray-traced reflections and shadows. These optional settings can add visual detail, but they increase rendering demands; their presence does not imply that every PC can run them smoothly.
Textures and world detail
Next-Gen adds selected 4K-upscaled character textures, high-resolution self-shadowing for main characters, updated sky textures and a new “Gray Sky” weather type. Other listed changes include improved vegetation and water, mesh and visual-effects refinements, environmental lighting updates, and cutscene changes. Console patch notes also cite improved texture fidelity, shadow quality, draw distance and crowd density. These are publisher-described features, not a quantified guarantee that every scene looks better than Classic.
PC graphics options
The PC version adds an ULTRA+ preset with higher settings for crowd count, shadows, grass density, texture quality, foliage visibility range, terrain, water and level of detail. It also supports DLSS 3 on compatible hardware and FSR 2.1. These options let players trade image quality for performance, but the result depends on GPU, CPU, output resolution, settings and scene.

Does Witcher 3 next-gen run at 60 FPS?
On PS5 and Xbox Series X, the 2022 update offers a Performance mode with a 60 FPS target and a Ray Tracing mode with a 30 FPS target. Both use dynamic resolution scaling. On Xbox Series S, Quality targets 30 FPS with higher resolution and image fidelity, while Performance targets 60 FPS for smoother play. CD PROJEKT RED states that the Series S version has no ray-tracing features.

These are publisher-stated targets, not measured averages or promises of a locked frame rate in every scene. Actual results may fluctuate with gameplay, scene, settings and patch. The publisher’s technical requirements and support page similarly notes that expected PC performance can vary with system configuration, settings and output resolution.
2022 console mode comparison
| Platform | Mode | Publisher-stated target and features |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Ray Tracing | 30 FPS target; ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion; dynamic resolution. |
| PS5 | Performance | 60 FPS target; dynamic resolution. |
| Xbox Series X | Ray Tracing | 30 FPS target; ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion; dynamic resolution. |
| Xbox Series X | Performance | 60 FPS target; dynamic resolution. |
| Xbox Series S | Quality | 30 FPS target; prioritizes resolution and image fidelity; no ray tracing. |
| Xbox Series S | Performance | 60 FPS target; prioritizes smoothness; no ray tracing. |
These mode descriptions come from CD PROJEKT RED’s December 2022 Next-Gen update notes. They do not establish equal resolution or identical image quality between consoles, nor do they provide a controlled Classic-versus-Next-Gen benchmark across platforms.
PC performance
There is no single useful FPS figure for Next-Gen PC play without the test system and settings. A meaningful comparison should identify the GPU and CPU, resolution, graphics preset, ray tracing and upscaling state, and exact game build. The official feature list confirms ULTRA+, DLSS 3 support for compatible hardware, FSR 2.1 and optional ray tracing, but feature support alone does not establish a universal frame rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo all platforms get the same Next-Gen visuals?
No. The 2022 update targeted PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, while PS4, Xbox One and Switch received a separate update whose features did not match the current-generation set in every respect. In particular, do not assume that consoles all have ray tracing: Xbox Series S explicitly does not, and the PC’s optional RT reflections and shadows are not a general console feature.
Rank #3
On PC, hardware capability and chosen settings determine which options are available and practical. On consoles, the mode selection determines the main quality-versus-smoothness trade-off. The platform and mode matter as much as the label “Next-Gen.”

Yes, CD PROJEKT RED said eligible owners of the original PC, PS4 and Xbox One releases could upgrade to the 2022 Next-Gen version for free. The digital Next-Gen Complete Edition launched on December 14, 2022, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, GOG and Epic Games Store. The publisher later announced a boxed Complete Edition for PS5 and Xbox Series X for people who need to buy a copy; an eligible existing owner does not need to buy that physical edition to get the upgrade. See the publisher’s upgrade announcement and physical edition announcement.
How does the 2026 Remastered release fit in?
Remastered is a separate release, not another name for the 2022 Next-Gen update. CD PROJEKT RED released it on September 29, 2026 as a free upgrade for eligible owners on supported platforms. Its publisher overview describes broader environment, NPC and monster texture improvements, foliage and lighting/rendering updates, reworked combat and animations, PC path tracing, and PS5 Pro support. The publisher also describes PS5 Pro modes targeting 60 FPS with ray tracing and up to 90 FPS in Performance mode with VRR; those are Remastered claims, not 2022 Next-Gen figures. Consult the publisher’s Remastered overview for platform and build-specific details.
A PC hotfix issued October 1, 2026 adjusted Velen visuals, reverted a HairWorks change that had caused serious issues for some users, and fixed a failure to launch Classic 1.32. That confirms Classic remains selectable in the PC context. When comparing screenshots, settings or performance now, note whether the game is running Classic 1.32, a 2022 Next-Gen build such as 4.0/4.04, or Remastered; features and patch behavior should not be carried across those labels without confirmation.
What the official comparison does not establish
The publisher’s feature and mode notes describe what changed and the intended console frame-rate targets, but they do not provide a controlled, apples-to-apples benchmark of Classic against Next-Gen on every platform. They also do not quantify a universal image-quality improvement or guarantee that target frame rates are maintained in every scene. Treat specific performance claims as valid only for the stated platform, build, hardware and settings.
