Still, encryption cannot tell you whether a login page is genuine, stop phishing, or establish that an unknown network operator is trustworthy. Use this checklist to protect your devices and gaming accounts without treating every venue network as a threat.
Before you leave for the convention
Update your devices and apps
Install available operating-system, browser, game-launcher, and security-software updates while you are on a trusted connection. The FTC recommends keeping computers and smartphones current; applying updates to your console, handheld, and gaming apps is a sensible extension of the same device-maintenance practice.

Secure the accounts you may use
- Use strong, unique passwords for your email and gaming-platform accounts. Reusing a password lets a compromise on one service put other accounts at risk.
- Turn on two-factor authentication (MFA) wherever the account offers it. Secure your email account too, since it may be used to reset gaming passwords.
- Review account recovery options and make sure you can reach them if you lose access to a device.
- If you want a physical FIDO security key, first confirm that the relevant account and device support it. CISA identifies security keys as a strong, phishing-resistant MFA option, but a key protects sign-in only; it does not encrypt network traffic or secure the venue’s Wi-Fi.

Where your device provides the option, disable automatic joining of open or public Wi-Fi networks. This reduces the chance that your phone or laptop will join a hotspot just because its name matches a saved network. The FTC specifically recommends disabling automatic smartphone connections to public Wi-Fi in its cybersecurity guidance.

At the venue, verify the network before signing in
Ask convention staff or consult official event information for the Wi-Fi network name and connection steps. A familiar-looking SSID is not proof that an access point belongs to the venue, and network names and sign-in flows vary by event.
- Do not enter a password after following an unsolicited message, QR code, or pop-up. If a prompt seems unexpected, stop and ask staff how attendees should connect.
- Check that websites handling sign-ins use HTTPS. HTTPS encrypts the connection between your device and the site, but scammers can also use encrypted websites; the padlock alone does not establish that a page is legitimate.
- Use trusted apps or type a service’s known address yourself rather than following an unfamiliar sign-in link.
The FTC’s February 2023 guidance says, “Because of the widespread use of encryption, connecting through a public Wi-Fi network is usually safe.” That is a general statement about public hotspots, not a guarantee about a particular convention’s network or every page you visit. Choose a connection that matches your comfort level

When a VPN may help
A VPN is optional, not a cure-all. The FTC explains that a VPN app can encrypt traffic routed through it, including traffic to a website that does not itself use encryption. But the VPN provider can access that routed traffic, so consider its privacy practices before relying on it. A VPN does not make you anonymous, replace updates or MFA, or verify a website. The FTC’s explanation is in its February 2018 article, “In the market for a VPN app?”
Do not assume a VPN will work with every convention login portal, console, or game service. Compatibility depends on the device, service, and network setup.

While connected, protect your sign-ins and gear
- Use HTTPS websites and trusted apps for account access, and pause if a page asks for credentials in an unexpected way.
- On a borrowed or shared device, do not save your password. Sign out when finished, especially from email and gaming accounts.
- Keep your devices with you and use their normal screen-lock protections when you step away. Network encryption does not protect unattended hardware.
- Do not treat a VPN, a security key, or a familiar network name as a substitute for the other safeguards: a VPN handles connection privacy, while a security key supports account authentication.
The FTC’s older public Wi-Fi security tips transcript includes durable advice to avoid password reuse and log out when finished. Its broader warning that most hotspots lack encryption predates the FTC’s newer 2023 guidance and should not be read as the current general picture.

- Stop at the prompt. Do not submit credentials to an unexpected portal, message link, QR code, or pop-up.
- Disconnect if you are unsure. Use mobile data if available, or ask convention staff for the official connection process.
- Respond from a trusted connection if a password may have been exposed. Change it through the service’s official account settings, then review MFA settings and active sessions and sign out sessions you do not recognize.
- Protect related accounts. If you reused that password elsewhere, change those passwords to unique ones, starting with the email account used for recovery.
These are practical recovery steps, not a convention-specific incident procedure. The FTC’s consumer guidance supports caution around scammers and recommends strong passwords and MFA.
