Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The best Witcher 3 settings for FPS depend first on your target resolution and frame-rate range, not on a universal preset. If performance is short, begin with ray tracing off; then adjust one graphics option at a time and compare in the same kind of gameplay. That cautious tuning workflow is editorial guidance, not a CD PROJEKT RED benchmark. Its official configuration examples show why resolution, ray tracing and upscaling should be considered together.
Start with resolution and a realistic frame-rate target
Choose the resolution you actually want to play at, then decide what frame-rate range feels acceptable on your display. Resolution is a major part of the tradeoff: CD PROJEKT RED Support says higher resolution significantly affects FPS, and notes that performance can vary with the scene, system configuration, graphics settings and output resolution. Its targets are reference points, not guarantees for an individual PC. See CD PROJEKT RED’s current PC requirements.

If you are asking how to improve Witcher 3 performance without making it look bad, avoid changing several settings at once. Make a change, revisit representative gameplay, and judge both smoothness and image quality at your chosen output resolution. This makes it easier to keep visual changes that matter to you and undo those that do not. The official material cited here does not establish a specific FPS gain for any individual graphics toggle.

Ray tracing is a substantial configuration choice, rather than a minor finishing touch. CD PROJEKT RED’s 2024 PC requirements table presents a High example at 1080p with ray tracing off, an Ultra example at 1440p with RTAO/RTGI, and an Ultra example at 4K with all ray-tracing features enabled. The two latter examples indicate DLSS/FSR. These are dated official configuration examples, not promises that a particular PC will reach a particular frame rate. Read the 2024 requirements table.

Should you turn ray tracing on in The Witcher 3? Try it if its lighting effects matter enough to you to accept the performance tradeoff on your system. If frame rate is already below your chosen range, start with RT off, establish a satisfactory baseline, and only then test RT. The official examples place RT in higher-demand configurations; they do not establish a universal best choice.
Understand what upscaling changes
Upscaling can be part of a higher-resolution or ray-traced setup. It reconstructs an output image from a lower-resolution render, so it belongs in the configuration you evaluate—not as an unrelated switch to consider after deciding on resolution and RT. The 2024 examples pair DLSS/FSR with selected RT configurations.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
CD PROJEKT RED’s updated requirements page also distinguishes test methods: its RT Minimum, RT Recommended and Path Tracing measurements used DLSS/FSR/XeSS Auto; other listed configurations used native resolution. Path Tracing additionally used Frame Generation. Those methodological details matter when comparing official targets: a result produced with upscaling or Frame Generation is not the same test as native-resolution rendering. Check the current official PC requirements and their test context.

| Official configuration example | Resolution and features | Upscaling context | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| High, 2024 requirements table | 1080p; ray tracing off | Not stated in this table | A non-RT reference tier. |
| Ultra, 2024 requirements table | 1440p; RTAO/RTGI | DLSS/FSR indicated | Higher detail with selected RT features and reconstruction. |
| Ultra, 2024 requirements table | 4K; all RT features | DLSS/FSR indicated | The most demanding of these examples; upscaling is part of the stated configuration. |
| Updated RT/Path Tracing measurements | RT Minimum, RT Recommended and Path Tracing | DLSS/FSR/XeSS Auto; Path Tracing also used Frame Generation | Compare only with the test method in mind. |
The updated official page lists tiers named Minimum, Recommended, Ultra, RT Minimum, RT Recommended and Path Tracing. Because requirements have changed, consult that live page for current hardware details and targets rather than relying on remembered specifications. CD PROJEKT RED cautions that FPS varies by scene, system, settings and output resolution.

Tune in a controlled order
This sequence is practical editorial guidance, not a developer-published benchmark or a promise of particular gains:
- Confirm your game version and graphics API. The official support interface lists versions 5.0, 4.04 and 1.32, and offers DirectX 11 and DirectX 12, with DirectX 12 marked as the default there. Make sure advice you follow applies to your installed version and API. Open the official Witcher 3 PC support interface.
- Set your target output resolution and acceptable frame-rate range. Use the resolution you intend to play at; official guidance identifies higher resolution as a significant FPS factor.
- Establish a baseline with ray tracing off if performance is insufficient. Keep the rest of your settings consistent so you have a useful comparison.
- Test one option at a time in representative gameplay. Compare the same kind of scene and note whether the change improves the image enough to justify its effect on smoothness.
- Evaluate upscaling as part of the final combination. If using it, judge the resulting image at your chosen output resolution alongside your RT and resolution choices.
- Keep or revert each change based on your own results. Repeat until the balance suits your system and preferences; do not assume an official tier or another player’s configuration predicts your FPS.
Check version and platform before applying advice
This guide concerns the Windows PC graphics configuration evidence available from CD PROJEKT RED. The support interface also lists Steam Deck and older game versions, so version-specific advice should not be carried across automatically. PC requirements do not establish graphics modes for PlayStation or Xbox.

Treat that as an announced change, not an effective requirement, unless the update has shipped by the time you read this.
