CD PROJEKT RED’s current game page and FAQ describes the expansions as standalone adventures. The publisher’s 2016 Game of the Year Edition announcement said that edition included every piece of downloadable content and all updates and improvements released by that time. Edition names and packages can differ by platform or release, so check the contents shown on the specific store listing or physical package rather than assuming every historical version is identical.

What order should you play the Witcher 3 DLC?
- Play the main campaign first. It establishes the central story and Geralt’s search for Ciri, so you have that context before turning to the separate expansion stories.
- Play Hearts of Stone next. It was the first of the two major expansions released and takes Geralt into a story involving the Man of Glass, No Man’s Land, and Oxenfurt.
- Finish with Blood and Wine. It followed Hearts of Stone, introduces Toussaint, and was framed by the publisher as a journey that closes Geralt’s story.
This route follows release order and the publisher’s description of Blood and Wine; it is editorial guidance, not an official required order. CD PROJEKT RED’s FAQ says players can start either expansion separately from the main menu, so you do not have to finish the main campaign before accessing them.

How long are the expansions?
At announcement, CD PROJEKT RED estimated Hearts of Stone at 10-plus hours and Blood and Wine at 20-plus hours. Those are launch-era publisher estimates, not guaranteed completion times; actual playtime varies with pace and optional activities. The estimates appeared in the publisher’s April 7, 2015 expansion announcement.
Do you need to buy the expansions separately?
If you have the Complete Edition, the two major expansions are included. Access for people who own only the base game depends on the platform and edition, and storefront availability has changed over time. CD PROJEKT RED’s current FAQ says standalone expansions are delisted and the base game is replaced by the Complete Edition in the storefront changes it describes. It also says previous-generation PS4 and Xbox One owners can download the expansions free, while existing expansion owners keep them in their libraries as the content is patched into the base game. Because availability wording can vary across platforms and later releases, verify your platform’s current store and account-library instructions before purchasing or claiming anything.

What changed with The Witcher 3 Remastered?
CD PROJEKT RED released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on September 29, 2026. Its release notice says the update includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine for owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The notice establishes those platforms, but a player should follow current platform-specific instructions to confirm how access or an upgrade is claimed.
