Short answer: “Classic” means the older 1.32 build, while “Next-Gen” usually means the free version 4.0 update released in 2022. Version 4.0 added visual upgrades, platform-specific performance modes and quality-of-life features. As of October 4, 2026, CD PROJEKT RED has also released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, which the publisher says is a free upgrade for existing owners on the same platform. So the 1.32-versus-4.0 comparison is useful for understanding the original update, but Remastered is now the newer edition.
What’s the difference between The Witcher 3 Classic and Next-Gen?
Here, “Classic” refers to version 1.32, and “Next-Gen” refers to the version 4.0 update that CD PROJEKT RED announced on December 12, 2022. Version 4.0 added graphics options and visual changes, new performance modes on newer consoles, and features such as photo mode and cross-progression. The publisher said the update was free and available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with updates also coming to PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch; the scope varied by platform. CD PROJEKT RED’s version 4.0 notes detail the changes.

The comparison is not simply “old graphics versus new graphics.” Some features depend on platform or PC hardware, and console performance modes have publisher-stated targets rather than independent, measured results.

PC and newer consoles
Version 4.0 introduced ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion on PC and next-gen consoles. On compatible PC hardware, players could also enable ray-traced reflections and shadows. PC-specific options included DLSS 3 on compatible hardware and ULTRA+ settings affecting crowds, shadows, grass, textures, foliage visibility, terrain, water and detail.
#1 Best Overall
- Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity.
- Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world.
Other visual additions and changes included 4K character textures, environmental lighting and vegetation updates, mod and mod-inspired improvements, and support for FSR 2.1. These are features and changes listed by the publisher, not a promise that every platform renders the game identically or that every PC can use every option.
Older consoles and Switch
The 2022 announcement also included updates for PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, but CD PROJEKT RED warned that the scope differed by platform. The PC and next-gen graphics feature list should not be read as a specification for those older versions. Later, the July 2023 version 4.04 release brought some version 4.0 content and fixes to Switch and recorded additional platform-specific fixes, including an HDR calibration option and visual fixes for PC and newer consoles. The version 4.04 notes show why platform and patch level matter when comparing features.
Performance modes and frame-rate targets
For PS5 and Xbox Series X, CD PROJEKT RED’s 2022 notes describe two modes, both using dynamic resolution scaling:
| Platform | Mode | Publisher-stated target |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | Ray Tracing Mode | 30 FPS |
| PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | Performance Mode | 60 FPS |
| Xbox Series S | Quality Mode | 30 FPS; no ray-tracing features |
| Xbox Series S | Performance Mode | 60 FPS, prioritizing smoother gameplay over visual quality |
These are targets stated in CD PROJEKT RED’s December 12, 2022 update notes, not independent measurements of sustained frame rates. The cited official material does not establish side-by-side Classic-versus-Next-Gen benchmark results, exact resolution behavior in every scene, or an image-quality ranking. Do not treat the targets as guaranteed performance in every situation. See the publisher’s mode descriptions.

Features beyond graphics
Version 4.0 added several features that change how the game can be played or accessed, as well as platform-specific extras:
- Quality of life: photo mode, the ability to pause cutscenes, and an alternative camera that stays closer to the character.
- Progress and content: cross-progression after logging in, a new side quest, and alternate character and armor appearances.
- Language: Chinese and Korean voice-over, with console availability varying by region.
- PS5 controls and interface: DualSense adaptive triggers, haptic feedback and Activity Cards.
These additions are part of the version 4.0 update description; availability is not uniform across platforms and regions. The official update notes provide the platform-specific context.
Is the Next-Gen update worth it?
For someone deciding between 1.32 and version 4.0, the newer update offers a broader feature set: visual enhancements, more graphics options on supported PC hardware, console performance modes and convenience features. The practical benefit depends on the platform. A PC player needs compatible hardware for some advanced effects, while older consoles received a different subset of the update.

What Remastered adds—and what the claims mean
In its September 29, 2026 feature list, CD PROJEKT RED describes a new shading model; textures and models based on The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project; improved grass and foliage lighting; updated color grading; GTAO; updated screen-space reflections and shadows; ray-traced local shadows; and PC image-processing and multithreading changes. It also lists path tracing, NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 with ray reconstruction, and AMD FSR 4 support on Radeon RX 7000 and newer, with FSR 2 used on other cards. The feature list is available in Ukrainian. These are publisher-described features, not independently validated claims about frame rates or comparative image quality. See the publisher’s Remastered feature list.
A PC hotfix published October 1, 2026 fixed visual and performance issues affecting some users with HairWorks enabled and corrected an issue that prevented launching the Classic 1.32 version. That update makes patch state relevant when assessing current behavior; it does not establish that Classic is available on every platform. Read the October 1 PC hotfix notes.
Can I still play the Classic version?
The October 1, 2026 PC hotfix explicitly says it fixed an issue that prevented launching the Classic 1.32 version. That confirms PC launchability after the fix, but the cited note does not confirm Classic availability on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 or any other platform. If you need version 1.32 for a particular reason, check the version options and current patch behavior for your own platform rather than assuming the PC fix applies elsewhere.
