Which version of The Witcher 3 are you starting?
As of October 4, 2026, CD PROJEKT RED lists The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The publisher says the edition includes both expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Eligibility and what a store offers depend on your platform and region. Before buying, check the listing for your exact platform, whether it is digital or physical, which edition it is, and whether it includes both expansions. Bandai Namco lists physical and digital Complete Edition options for selected platforms, including PS5 and Xbox Series X, but regional stock and edition labels can change. Verify the current listing in your own storefront.
How should you pace quests and exploration?
Use suggested quest levels as a warning
Check the suggested level on a quest before setting out. If the next main quest is well above Geralt’s level, treat that as a cue to prepare rather than a command to grind. The 2015 Xbox Wire beginner guide recommends exploring before each new phase of the main plot; its advice predates Remastered, but it remains a useful way to pace a first run.

Explore selectively instead of clearing every marker
Look around the area you are already visiting for side quests, points of interest, and Places of Power. You do not need to clear every map marker. A short detour can uncover useful progression or a new quest, while trying to empty the whole map can turn exploration into a chore. Xbox Wire’s 2015 beginner advice specifically points to off-road exploration as a way to find Places of Power.
Keep one objective in focus
Track the quest you are actively pursuing and use its objective on the minimap to stay oriented. Remastered improves quest tracking and groups notifications; it also lets you hide several categories on the minimap. If the map feels crowded, adjust what it displays rather than treating every visible marker as an obligation.
What should you learn about combat first?
Manage stamina and reposition
The official PC manual describes stamina as a resource used by Signs and sprinting. Avoid spending it all at once: watch the meter, move out of danger when you need room, and use a Sign when you have the stamina to do so. Mix sword attacks with Signs instead of relying on one action for every encounter.
Notice adrenaline without building around it immediately
The manual says adrenaline points are gained and lost during combat and increase damage. Treat them as a combat resource to watch, not a reason to rush into attacks or invest blindly in a particular skill branch. Learn how your current abilities and the fight interact before making a longer-term build decision.

Prepare for the enemy in front of you
Potions, Signs, and knowledge of an enemy are part of the game’s preparation loop. Read the in-game tutorials and item descriptions for the effects available in your installed version, then choose what fits the encounter. Remastered has changed combat behavior, including non-boss monster attacks and reactions, so do not assume an older guide’s encounter script is definitive.
How should a beginner choose a build in Remastered?
Choose a direction based on how you want fights to feel, then follow the prerequisites shown in the skill tree. CD PROJEKT RED’s September 2026 Remastered notes describe a prerequisite-based tree, three ranks for each skill, and rebalanced effects and synergies. The notes do not establish one universally best beginner build.
- Sword-focused: Favor this direction if you want to emphasize direct weapon damage.
- Signs-focused: Consider it if you want magical control and utility to play a frequent role.
- Alchemy-focused: Choose it if preparing and using consumables appeals to you.
- Hybrid: Combine approaches when the tree’s prerequisites support the skills you want, rather than spreading points across branches without a plan.
Inspect each skill’s description, ranks, and prerequisites in your own game before spending points. Remastered reset existing skill points, and older skill-order recommendations may describe a different tree or balance.

Find Places of Power for ability points
Places of Power are a useful exploration goal because, according to Xbox Wire’s 2015 beginner guide, each one boosts a Sign and grants an ability point. The Sign boost and point give you an immediate benefit while helping you work toward a coherent route through the new skill tree. Consider nearby sites as you travel, but you do not have to search every region before continuing the story.

Judge equipment by the item details, not a ranked list
Keep an eye on the equipment available to Geralt and compare its stated attributes with what you are using. The current official Remastered materials cited here do not establish a best early sword, armor set, or exact upgrade sequence, so a named “best gear” list would promise more certainty than the evidence supports. Use the item descriptions in your game to decide whether a change suits your needs.
Why might a guide disagree with your game?
Check whether a guide was written for Remastered or an earlier version. The September 2026 update changed the skill tree, combat behavior, interface, and controls. In particular, the prerequisite paths and three ranks per skill differ from older skill layouts, while rebalanced effects can change how a once-popular build performs. CD PROJEKT RED also published a PC hotfix notice on October 1, 2026; platform-specific availability and fixes may not be identical, so check the update information for your platform when troubleshooting a discrepancy.
The official manual is from 2015, so its descriptions are helpful for core resources and interface concepts, not proof that every detail remains unchanged after the Remastered update. For exact current controls, item effects, and tutorials, prioritize what the game displays in your installed version.
