Use the official parcel map to identify the city or county, then search its project pages, planning cases, permits, hearing records, and agendas. Follow any promising result by its case number and check the latest official entry: an application is not proof that a project has been approved or is being built.
Find the government that controls the site
Identify the parcel where the proposed facility might go, then determine whether it lies inside a city or in an unincorporated county area. Use the local government’s official parcel or GIS map, or ask its planning office to confirm the jurisdiction. A nearby address may be governed by a different authority than your own.

Once you know the jurisdiction, find its planning or zoning department and the systems it uses for applications and permits. For example, Fairfax County provides address-based development tracking and land-development records: Land Development Information History. The county says this system is updated nightly; that update schedule applies to this system, not to other local portals.

Search project pages and ordinary planning records
Look in both places if the government has a dedicated data-center page and a general planning or permit search. A project may be listed as a data center on one site, but filed under a broader land-use category elsewhere.

- Search the planning department’s project or application pages, permit portal, and public-records system.
- Check planning commission and council or county-board agendas, hearing notices, minutes, and staff reports.
- Look for zoning or rezoning cases, conditional- or special-use requests, site plans, subdivision applications, and annexation filings.
Local governments publish records in different ways. St. Joseph’s data-center information page links proposal documents, site plans, hearing notices, and withdrawn applications. Twiggs County publishes data-center applications and hearing materials through its planning and zoning page. These are examples of local systems, not a guarantee that another jurisdiction has a single consolidated list.
Search by address, case number, and alternate terms
Try more than one search phrase: “data center” and “data centre,” the parcel address, applicant or developer name, project name, and any case or permit number you find. Also search the land-use terms used by the local government, such as rezoning, conditional use, site plan, or annexation. A project may not appear in a dedicated data-center search.
Search tools vary. San José lists data-center applications and directs users to look them up in its permit system by file number. Its data-center page also provides project-status tracking and information about requesting project-specific interest-list updates.

When you find a likely match, use its case or permit number to open the underlying record. Compare the parcel shown in the file with the official map; a similar project name or nearby address may refer to a different site.

- Application or permit number, parcel, applicant, and filing date.
- Current review stage and the date of the most recent case entry.
- Site plan, staff reports, hearing notices, minutes, and any decision.
Fairfax County’s address-searchable development information can help locate records, while San José’s system uses the file number to find applications. If a portal is unclear or a document is missing, contact the assigned planning office and ask for the current case file.
Check the latest status—not just the first announcement
Distinguish among a proposal, a filed application, an approval, a construction permit, and active construction. These are different stages. Check the newest case entry and decision, and look for later changes such as a withdrawal, revised application, moratorium, or permit. A project page or old news report can remain online after the case changes.
Local examples show why the date and status matter. St. Joseph’s page includes proposals that were later withdrawn. Calvert County reported that its Board adopted a six-month moratorium on data-center site-plan approvals on August 18, 2026; that is a time-sensitive local action, not a rule for other counties. San José cautions that its monthly application list may not reflect current permit status, so use the project’s current official record to verify where it stands.

Do not assume that a mailed notice will reach every nearby resident or that every application must have a public hearing. Notice, comment, and appeal rules depend on local law and the particular site or application. The City of Casey’s September 8, 2026 update said public notice was not required for the cited data-centre permit application under the rules applying to that land, and noted there were no third-party appeal rights for it.
Ask the planning office about the specific case’s hearing schedule, how to submit comments, whether an email interest list is available, and any deadlines. San José allows residents to request project-specific updates through its interest-list process. Confirm deadlines and participation rights with the responsible authority rather than relying on a general description of local procedure.

Read the submitted materials for the details that matter locally
Review the documents for the proposal’s site layout and likely effects near homes or other sensitive uses. Depending on local filing requirements, records may address access, utility infrastructure, energy and water assumptions, noise, stormwater, and environmental review.
What is included varies. A Burleigh County agenda packet, for example, describes application information that includes a project narrative, anticipated water and electricity needs, an acoustic study, a site plan, and a map of nearby residences and institutions. Treat this as one county’s example, not a universal checklist; ask what materials were required for the case you are following.
If your search finds nothing
A search with no results does not establish that no proposal exists. Records may be indexed under a different applicant or project name, listed only in an agenda or permit system, pending publication, or held by a neighboring jurisdiction.
- Check nearby parcels and confirm the jurisdiction boundary on the official map.
- Repeat searches using alternate names, “data centre,” and land-use or permit terms.
- Review recent and upcoming agendas, hearing notices, and permit records.
- Ask the planning office whether an application is pending, filed under another name, or indexed in a different system.
There is no central national database established by these local government sources. The responsible authority’s current records are the place to confirm a particular site’s status.
