For a first playthrough, follow the main story until a region opens up, then explore nearby quests and points of interest before moving on. Check each quest’s suggested level, and leave fights that feel punishing for later. There is no confirmed universal quest order you must follow: a flexible route lets you discover the world without turning the game into a checklist.
A flexible quest order for your first playthrough
Use the main story to orient yourself, then decide how much optional content you want to take on before the next story phase. Xbox Wire’s 2015 beginner guide recommends exploring between phases because the story can take Geralt into areas with enemies well above his level. It also points to the suggested level shown for quests as a useful signal—not a guarantee that every encounter will be easy.

- Follow the story until the region opens up. Let the main quest introduce the local situation and nearby opportunities.
- Check suggested levels before committing. If a quest is substantially above Geralt’s level, or an encounter feels overwhelming, mark it for later and try other nearby content instead of grinding.
- Choose optional activities that interest you. Side quests, contracts, treasure hunts, and points of interest offer ways to explore; you do not need to clear every marker.
- Return to the main story when you are ready. Repeat the cycle in the next area rather than trying to complete a region before progressing.
Exploration can reward curiosity. In its 2015 guide, Xbox Wire uses White Orchard as an example: venturing away from the road can reveal a settlement and a grindstone, while Places of Power can improve a Sign and grant an ability point. Treat these as illustrations of what you may discover, not a full route or a complete list of rewards.
Discovery or completionist tracking?
For a low-spoiler first run, follow nearby leads that catch your attention and let the story provide direction. If you prefer to keep tabs on optional content, use the map to select quests and track them. The Remastered patch notes say untracked quests have a distinct marker and can be selected for tracking. Neither approach establishes a universal missables-safe sequence: the sources do not validate one required order for all story quests, side quests, contracts, and treasure hunts.

How to approach combat
Combat is real-time and rewards observation more than button-mashing. Xbox Wire’s 2015 beginner guide advises watching enemy attack patterns to learn when to block or parry, trying different Signs to find what an enemy is susceptible to, and repositioning for a better angle. It describes fights as fast-moving and dependent on timing and care, even at normal difficulty.
- Watch first. Notice an enemy’s approach and attack timing before committing to a strike.
- Time your defense. Use blocks or parries when the opening appears rather than holding a defensive action without regard to the attack.
- Test Signs. If one approach is ineffective, try a different Sign and observe the result.
- Reposition. Move to improve your angle or create room instead of trading hits in a bad position.
The Remastered release notes describe polished behavior for many non-boss monsters, a dynamic combat camera, and improved target-lock switching. They also document a quick disengage: hold the dodge button to unlock from a target, then press sprint to run away. The precise control labels can differ by platform, so check the current in-game Controls Help and settings rather than assuming one controller mapping applies everywhere. The PS4 manual describes Controls Help for combat, exploration, swimming, and horseback riding, but it is a legacy manual and directs players to official support for current information.
Essential tips for a smoother start
Explore in short, useful bursts
Before advancing the story, look at nearby quests and points of interest and compare their suggested levels with Geralt’s current level. You can leave anything that feels too difficult and return later. This keeps exploration purposeful without making you grind or clear every map marker.

When traveling through a region, consider checking nearby paths and points of interest. Xbox Wire’s White Orchard example shows why: exploration away from the road can reveal a settlement or useful upgrade opportunity, and Places of Power can improve a Sign and grant an ability point.

Use meditation with your current game’s rules in mind
Xbox Wire’s 2015 guide says meditation can replenish vitality and prepared potions when Strong Alcohol is available. Because that guidance predates the current edition, follow your game’s tutorial and version-specific settings if the details in your playthrough differ.
Review the Remastered skill tree before choosing skills
CD PROJEKT RED says Remastered rearranged skills into a tree with three ranks per skill and prerequisites, and reset skill points as part of the change. Older build recommendations may not match the current layout, so inspect prerequisites and the available branches in your own game before spending points.

Adjust accessibility options if they help
The optional Bard’s Ballad preset is designed to reduce cognitive load by simplifying some mechanics and disabling selected features. Its listed options include a vitality regeneration boost, infinite breath, unlimited item and boat durability, and ignoring item weight. It is configurable, not required for beginners, and says nothing about a player’s ability.

Remastered also changes the skill tree and map quest markers, so advice written for an older version may not match your interface. CD PROJEKT RED’s October 1, 2026 PC hotfix 5.00c notes include a save/load fix for Documents folder paths containing special characters, audio and visual adjustments, and a fix restoring the ability to launch the Classic (1.32) version. The notice covers PC distribution through Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, and Xbox Play Anywhere PC; it does not establish identical patch status on every platform. If you encounter a technical problem, check your platform’s current update and the official support page.
