For removable cordless tool batteries, disconnect the pack from the tool and charger, keep it clean and dry, and store it in a cool place out of direct sunlight and away from children. The right storage charge and temperature limits vary by battery brand and model, so check the pack’s manual instead of applying one percentage or temperature range to every lithium-ion battery.
Prepare the battery for storage
- Disconnect it. Remove the battery from the tool and charger if the design allows. Hilti says to store its products with batteries removed; DEWALT advises disengaging packs from tools for extended storage and removing them from chargers after charging. For a tool with an integrated battery, follow that model’s instructions.
- Check its condition. Look for visible damage or cracks before putting the pack away. DEWALT says not to use a visibly damaged or cracked battery and not to attempt to repair it. Hilti recommends checking batteries before use and after prolonged storage.
- Keep it clean and dry. Store the pack in a dry location, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat. A closed box can help keep a battery dry and out of sunlight, but a generic storage box should not be treated as fireproof or as a place to charge batteries.
- Choose a secure location. Keep batteries out of children’s reach and away from unauthorized users.
These precautions reflect manufacturer guidance; they do not eliminate every risk. For the exact handling, service, and disposal instructions for a pack, use its manufacturer’s documentation.

Set the storage charge from the battery’s manual
There is no single storage-charge percentage established for every cordless tool battery. Manufacturer advice differs, including within STIHL’s own guidance:

- STIHL’s international support article, modified April 15, 2024, recommends storing its batteries at 40–60% charge. It also says a STIHL battery used regularly does not need to be recharged during storage.
- STIHL’s US storage guide describes 40–80% as a general range for its batteries.
- DEWALT says to fully charge its batteries before storage lasting longer than six months.
These are brand-specific instructions, not interchangeable rules. Find the storage guidance for your exact battery model and follow it, especially if the pack will be stored for months. If the manual does not give a storage percentage or check interval, do not infer one from another manufacturer’s advice.

Choose a suitable storage temperature
Use the storage limits in the battery or tool manual. STIHL’s international guidance gives -10°C to 50°C as a possible storage range for its batteries, while explicitly directing users to the manual for exact limits. That range is not a universal limit for lithium-ion tool batteries. Hilti likewise directs users to the technical data for its products’ limits.
STIHL’s US guide gives 50°F–68°F as its preferred range for maximum battery life. Treat that as STIHL guidance for its products, not a requirement for other brands. Whatever the model, keep the pack away from direct sun and heat sources; a garage, basement, or insulated shed is suitable only if it stays within that battery’s stated limits.

Let a cold or hot battery return to its allowed charging conditions
Storage and charging limits can differ. STIHL Canada says its batteries must be above 5°C to charge. Do not assume that a battery may be charged just because it is within its storage range: check the model’s charging-temperature instructions, particularly after it has been in cold or hot conditions.

Check the pack after long storage
Before putting a stored battery back into service, inspect it for visible damage and follow the manufacturer’s checks. If it is cracked or otherwise visibly damaged, do not use or attempt to repair it. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for the appropriate service and disposal route; DEWALT directs customers to a service center for disposal.

What to check in your exact model’s instructions
- Whether the battery is removable and whether the tool has special instructions for integrated batteries.
- The recommended charge level and any check or recharge interval for long-term storage.
- Permitted storage temperatures and separate charging-temperature limits.
- Inspection, service, and disposal directions for a damaged or end-of-life battery.
