Check the final order record against the package
Start with the completed receipt or order record, rather than the estimate shown in the original cart. Compare the steak’s ordered quantity and unit price with the weight information on the package you received. For a delivery, keep the package label and order details available so you can refer to both when contacting the seller.

Do not assume the difference or calculate a refund from an estimate. The receipt and package label determine what was ordered and supplied; the order’s actual figures and the retailer’s pricing policy determine whether a charge adjustment is due.

Have the person who placed the order contact the retailer or platform. Include the order number, the steak’s item line, and the relevant receipt and package information. Ask the company to check whether the quantity charged matches the quantity supplied and, if not, to adjust the charge. Keep the response and any revised receipt.

If the order was placed through Instacart, its help page explains how customers can view a receipt, understand order charges, and request a refund through their account. That route is specific to Instacart; other retailers and services may use different steps and policies.
Keep a retailer request separate from a card dispute
If the seller’s response does not resolve the issue, review the process for the payment method you used. The CFPB’s credit-card refund guidance says to contact the seller first when a product is defective or was not what was ordered. It also explains that being charged for a purchase when goods were not received can qualify as a credit-card billing error, with a 60-day notice period after the charge appears on the card statement for that billing-error process.

This is general U.S. guidance about credit cards. It does not establish that every disagreement about a partial quantity qualifies as a billing error, nor does it automatically apply to debit cards, cash, or every payment provider. Check the relevant provider’s instructions and deadlines for your situation.
Update the group’s split after the charge is settled
Use the allocation the group agreed to before placing the order. Once the retailer confirms any correction, recalculate shares under that same arrangement and show the arithmetic so everyone can verify it. If people chose different groceries, allocating costs by item may be fairer than splitting the entire order equally.

For a one-off order, a shared written calculation is enough. If your group uses an expense app, Splitwise lists equal, exact-amount, percentage, shares, adjustment, reimbursement, and itemized allocation methods on its help page. Its receipt guidance says mobile Pro subscribers can scan a receipt for itemization; receipt scanning is optional, not necessary to resolve this order.
A neutral update keeps the facts clear without assigning blame: “The order shows [ordered weight], while the package information shows [received weight]. I’ve asked the store/app to check the item charge. Once they confirm any adjustment, I’ll update everyone’s share using our original split.” Replace the bracketed details only after checking the order and package.

What the broader pricing discussion does—and does not—tell you
In April 2026, the FTC announced an inquiry seeking public comment on whether a rule was needed to address online food and grocery delivery fee practices. Its questions cover total prices and fees, variable charges, online-versus-store price differences, and charges for goods or services a consumer did not agree to buy. The announcement and related notice describe a proposed rulemaking inquiry, not a final nationwide rule deciding whether a particular steak charge was incorrect.
