Start with the problem that most often costs you a fight—lost health, scarce ammunition, reload downtime, missed weak points, or unsafe approaches—and choose talents whose conditions match how you actually play. Frogwares’ game director says ammunition is scarce and monsters are tough, while noting that talents can work alongside weapon upgrades and weak-point damage. Xbox Wire’s August 18, 2026 interview offers that official context; the specific talent effects below come from Nerd’s Chalk, not an official talent reference.
How to choose talents in The Sinking City 2
Treat each build as a starting direction, not a universal ranking. The cited talent guide describes a loadout of three regular talents and one special talent, so each slot should support a tactic you use often. Before choosing, ask:

- What drains you most: health, healing items, ammunition, or time spent in combat?
- Do you wait for focused aim, or fire quickly when enemies pressure you?
- Does your normal combat loop rely on reloading, switching weapons, dodging, or melee?
- Will the next enemies and your preferred fighting distance let a talent’s conditional effect activate?
Talents can be changed at safe rooms as the next stretch demands, according to Nerd’s Chalk’s talent guide, updated August 21, 2026. Frogwares has described multiple monster behaviors, so a talent that suits one encounter may not be the best fit for the next.
Best talent directions by playstyle
If survival and recovery are your biggest problems
For a more forgiving route, Nerd’s Chalk recommends Deathless Vigor and Unhallowed Salve. Add Chitinbound against monsters or Carapace of the Damned against humanoids; consider Potent Tincture if you carry healing items. This direction can help in unfamiliar or crowded fights, but filling too many slots with defense leaves less room for ammunition or offensive support.
#1 Best Overall
If you craft much of your ammunition
Alchemical Abundance is the guide’s starting point when crafting supplies most of your ammunition. For deliberate opening shots, consider Opening Gambit; if you regularly spend ammunition breaking weak spots, consider Ruptured Core. These choices are less likely to solve shortages caused mainly by missed shots.
If reload downtime or weapon swaps interrupt your rhythm
Choose Profane Reload to address reload downtime. If you frequently rotate guns and attack after switching, the guide suggests Gunslinger’s Trance and Instruments of Death. Swap-focused bonuses have little value if you usually stick with one gun and reload it.
If you take patient, accurate weak-point shots
Reticle Ritual suits players who wait for aim to become fully focused; pair it with Ruptured Core for destroying weak spots. If you take quicker, unfocused shots, choose Wandering Bullet instead. Focus-dependent bonuses are a poor match when pressure regularly forces you to shoot before aim settles.

If you prefer close-range melee
The guide’s melee route combines Butcher’s Zeal and Inner Beast, with Feral Surge for close-range creature damage. Strange Evasion can support a safer counterattack after a dodge. Avoid building around melee if enemies cannot be approached safely or you tend to reload rather than attack when a magazine is empty.
Rank #3
If you fight with the flashlight off
Silent Hunter is intended for players who can track movement and aim without illumination. The guide suggests Opening Gambit and either Reticle Ritual or Wandering Bullet as supporting choices. Its damage bonus does not make Calvin undetectable, so do not treat darkness as a guarantee of stealth.
If you want high-risk offense
Vessel of Destruction, Crimson Threshold, and Pact of the Reaper form the guide’s high-risk route; Vengeful Spirit is another option. The approach trades greater vulnerability for conditional damage and healing on kills. It is a poor fit if ordinary hits often interrupt your kill chains.
Rank #4
When should you change your talent choices?
Change direction when the next stretch changes the conditions your talents need. A swap-oriented setup cannot help much if you stop changing weapons; a close-range route is risky if the next threats cannot be approached safely; and focus bonuses lose value when combat keeps forcing rushed shots. Optional investigation can also yield resources, shortcuts, and other useful discoveries, according to Frogwares’ creature designer in the August 18, 2026 PlayStation Blog interview. That broader survival-horror context makes resource needs and enemy behavior worth weighing alongside damage.
Which talents should you unlock first?
There is no established performance ranking or published win-rate data for these talents. Use the guide’s recommendations as conditional starting points: prioritize the route that addresses your most frequent combat problem, then choose supporting talents that fit your usual actions. The detailed effects and combinations cited here are from Nerd’s Chalk’s editorial guide rather than official talent documentation, and no independent testing is claimed.
