No. The PlayStation Vita and PlayStation Portable (PSP) are separate Sony handheld consoles, not different names for the same system. A Vita can run some PSP games in digital form, but it cannot play PSP UMD discs, and compatibility depends on the specific title.
What is the difference between a PSP and a PS Vita?
The PSP is Sony’s earlier handheld platform; the PS Vita is a later, separate platform with its own games, hardware and physical game cards. Sony lists different specifications and media formats for each system.

| Feature | PSP | PS Vita |
|---|---|---|
| Physical game format | UMD discs | PlayStation Vita game cards |
| Analog controls | One analog pad | Two analog sticks |
| Screen on representative models | 4.3-inch TFT LCD, 480 × 272 pixels (Sony’s 2004 specification) | PCH-1000: 5-inch OLED, 960 × 544 pixels (Sony’s 2012 launch specification); PCH-2000: 5-inch LCD at the same resolution |
| Additional input | Physical buttons | Capacitive front touchscreen and rear touch pad; the launch specification also lists motion sensors and cameras |
| PSP software | Plays PSP games | Plays some compatible PSP games digitally; not UMD discs |
The display figures identify particular models, not every revision. For example, the original PCH-1000 Vita uses OLED, while the PCH-2000 uses LCD. Sony’s Vita launch announcement and specifications, PSP specifications and Vita specifications describe the differences.
Can a PS Vita play PSP games?
Yes, it can play some PSP games distributed digitally, but it does not support every PSP title. Sony’s Vita User’s Guide says that some PSP games are incompatible and that some titles cannot be copied from a PS3 or downloaded using the Vita. Check Sony’s supported-title information for the exact game before relying on Vita compatibility.
#1 Best Overall
- Refurbished & Fully Tested: Professionally restored to full working order; may show minor cosmetic wear.
- Vibrant LCD Screen: Enjoy sharp visuals and responsive touchscreen gameplay.
- Slim & Lightweight Design: Thinner and lighter than the original PS Vita 1000 for added comfort.
- Dual Analog Sticks: Provides precise control and console-style gameplay.
- Wi-Fi Connectivity: Play online, download digital titles, and access the PlayStation Store (where available).
PSP games were designed for the PSP’s screen resolution, so their graphics may look rough on the Vita’s higher-resolution display. Compatibility does not mean the game has been remastered or adapted to the Vita screen.
Can you use PSP UMD discs in a PS Vita?
No. The Vita has no UMD drive, and Sony’s 2012 PS Vita FAQ explicitly says that the system does not support UMD discs. The FAQ said owners would need to obtain a digital version from PlayStation Store, if that game appeared on the supported-title list. That was historical guidance, not a guarantee that a digital version can be purchased or downloaded today.

Which system makes sense for your games?
- You own PSP UMDs: A PSP is the straightforward choice for playing that physical collection. A Vita cannot read those discs.
- You want a particular PSP game on Vita: Verify the exact title’s compatibility and whether it is accessible to you digitally. Do not assume every PSP game is available on Vita.
- You want Vita-native games: Choose a Vita if its own game library is the reason you want the handheld; PSP compatibility is only partial.
- You are choosing a used console: Check the model revision and the condition of the specific unit. Compare the games and formats you can actually access, rather than treating Vita as a universal replacement for a PSP.
What is the current PlayStation Store situation?
As of PlayStation’s US support notice, new purchases from the PS Vita Store are scheduled to end in July 2027. Sony says users will then be unable to buy new games, add-ons or other content there; previously owned content can remain playable, subject to each game’s online features and service availability. This date and policy are specific to the US notice and could change or differ by region. Check PlayStation’s store notice for current terms.
