If a page shows your selected text but copying it produces nothing, the search highlighter may have replaced the paragraph’s underlying text nodes. In an illustrative bug scenario, Parsa Jiravand describes a search routine that rebuilds a container with innerHTML as matches update; that can remove the nodes a browser selection refers to. A safer visual-highlighting approach is the CSS Custom Highlight API, which styles text ranges without rebuilding the paragraph’s DOM.
Why can search highlighting make a selection disappear?
A browser selection is a range with boundary points tied to particular DOM nodes and offsets. In Jiravand’s example, application code generates markup for search matches and assigns it to a container’s innerHTML. That replaces the container’s existing children with newly parsed nodes. If a selection was anchored in the old text nodes, removing those nodes can cause the selection to collapse.

The risky part is rebuilding the content to create a visual effect—not the search expression or the <mark> element by itself. Jiravand’s scenario describes someone selecting a paragraph to quote it, pressing copy, and pasting nothing; it is an illustration of the failure mode, not evidence of how often it happens.
How does the CSS Custom Highlight API avoid rebuilding text?
The API lets application code create JavaScript Range objects for matching text, group them in a Highlight, and register that object in CSS.highlights. A CSS ::highlight() rule supplies the appearance. The ranges point to text already in the document, so applying the highlight does not itself replace the text nodes or change the page’s DOM structure.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Find match ranges. Traverse the relevant text nodes and calculate the start and end offsets for each match.
- Create ranges. Create a
Rangefor each match using its text node and offsets. - Register the highlight. Put the ranges in a
Highlightobject and register it under a stable name inCSS.highlights. - Style it. Add a CSS rule for
::highlight(name)to control the supported visual properties. - Update or clear it. When the query changes or is cleared, remove or replace the previous named highlight and register the current matches.
MDN’s CSS Custom Highlight API documentation covers ranges, the highlight registry, and styling. Jiravand’s example likewise clears the prior named highlight before registering the next result set.
How do the two approaches differ?
| Concern | Rebuilding markup, as in the example | CSS Custom Highlight API |
|---|---|---|
| Existing text nodes | Assigning generated markup to innerHTML replaces the container’s children. |
Styles ranges without changing the DOM structure, according to MDN. |
| Existing selection | A selection anchored to removed nodes can collapse. | Does not replace those nodes to apply the visual highlight, so it avoids that specific cause of selection loss. |
| Overlapping matches | The example does not establish a general precedence rule. | For conflicting styles, higher Highlight.priority takes precedence; if priorities tie, the most recently registered highlight wins. |
| Browser and style support | Depends on the implementation and its markup strategy. | Check support for the project’s target browsers and the CSS properties used in ::highlight(); older browsers and devices may not support the API. |
Saving selection offsets and reconstructing the selection after rebuilding is technically possible, but Jiravand notes that this adds selection-management work. If preserving an existing selection matters, avoiding unnecessary node replacement is the more direct design choice.

What should developers check before adopting it?
Browser availability
MDN classifies the CSS Custom Highlight API as Baseline 2025, newly available across the latest devices and browser versions since June 2025. That classification does not guarantee support on older devices or in every browser version your users have. Check MDN’s browser compatibility table against the product’s actual targets before relying on the API.

Jiravand’s article reports support beginning with Chrome and Edge 105, Safari 17.2, and Firefox 140, and says Firefox does not yet apply text-decoration or text-shadow inside ::highlight(). Those are the article’s reported version and property details; they are not independently confirmed here. Verify current support for the browsers and styles your application needs.

Overlaps and style conflicts
Different named highlights can overlap. MDN documents Highlight.priority as the way to determine which highlight’s style wins in a conflict; with equal priorities, the most recently registered highlight wins. Set priorities deliberately if, for example, search matches can overlap another application highlight.
Accessibility and meaning
A custom highlight is visual styling, not semantic markup. MDN notes that custom highlights do not inherently provide semantics; if the emphasis carries meaning for assistive technology, assess that separately and use semantic HTML such as <mark> where appropriate. Do not assume that a colored range alone communicates the same information to every user.
