If you compare services, look closely at what child information they monitor, how often they check it, what they can miss, and what recovery help and insurance actually provide.
What child identity theft protection can—and cannot—do
Child identity theft can happen when someone uses a child’s Social Security number, name, address, or birth date to seek financial accounts, loans, utilities, housing, or government benefits. Children generally do not have credit reports, so misuse may go unnoticed until a family encounters an unexpected bill, benefit problem, or loan denial.

A paid service may monitor credit reports, search other data sources for signs of misuse, help with recovery, or offer identity theft insurance. Those are distinct functions, and coverage varies by company. Monitoring can flag some activity, but it does not prevent identity theft or cover every route to misuse. It is not a substitute for limiting disclosure of a child’s information or considering a credit freeze.

#1 Best Overall
- WHAT DOES IT COVER: Roll once over names, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and prescription details on mail, statements, shipping labels, and boxes before recycling. The patented 0.5" masking pattern hides 3 lines of text in one pass.
- HOW MANY USES DO YOU GET: Each pre-inked Guard Your ID Advanced Roller delivers about 1,000 impressions (roughly 100 feet of coverage). A twist-on cap keeps the ink fresh for a 2-year shelf life, so it is ready whenever the mail arrives.
- DOES IT WORK ON GLOSSY LABELS: Yes, on most glossy and coated surfaces, plus paper, envelopes, junk mail, and prescription labels. Give the ink 10 to 15 seconds to dry on slick surfaces; it is instant on paper. Results vary by coating.
- IS IT REFILLABLE: No, and that is the point. The Advanced Roller is pre-inked and sealed, so there are no refill cartridges to buy, no ink bottles to handle, and nothing to dry out on the shelf. When one runs out, reach for the next roller.
- SHREDDER OR ROLLER: No jams, no paper dust, no noise, and the page stays intact and recyclable. Covers boxes and shipping labels a shredder cannot. Faster than a redacting marker, fits in a drawer. Black roller.
What to compare before paying for a service
Ask for specific answers in the provider’s current terms. A headline such as “family protection” or a large insurance limit does not tell you what a plan does for a child.
| What to check | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Child eligibility | Can the plan enroll minors? What ages qualify, and what proof of guardianship is required? | Official guidance does not establish any particular provider’s eligibility rules; confirm them directly with the provider. |
| Monitoring scope | Does it check credit reports, other identity data, or both? Which bureaus and databases are included? | Credit monitoring and identity monitoring look for different kinds of activity. Service coverage varies. |
| Check frequency and alerts | How often are sources checked? How will alerts reach you? Are report access or credit scores extra? | The FTC advises consumers to ask how often reports are checked and which bureaus are monitored. |
| Blind spots | Which types of misuse are not monitored or may not trigger an alert? | Credit monitoring may miss bank withdrawals and tax-refund fraud. Identity monitoring may miss some government-benefit and Social Security claims. |
| Recovery assistance | Is a case manager included? Will the service help write creditor letters, place freezes, or contact institutions? Are those services extra? | These are possible recovery-service functions, not guaranteed features. A provider may need formal authority to act for you. |
| Insurance | What expenses are covered? What is the deductible? What exclusions apply, and could another policy pay first? | Policies may cover certain recovery expenses, lost wages, or legal fees. They generally do not reimburse money stolen by scammers or identity-theft financial losses. |
| Total cost and alternatives | Is there a monthly or annual fee? Is recovery assistance included? Is similar coverage already available through a bank, credit union, card provider, employer, or insurer? | Some services may be available through an existing benefit, while other features may cost extra. Compare the actual terms, not just the plan name. |
Understand the service’s components
Credit monitoring
Credit monitoring checks credit reports for changes. Depending on the plan, alerts may involve new accounts, inquiries, delinquencies, public records, or changes to personal information. Ask how many of the three nationwide credit reporting companies are covered and how frequently they are checked. Credit monitoring cannot alert you to activity that does not appear in the reports it checks.

Identity monitoring
Identity monitoring searches sources beyond credit reports for personal information or activity that could signal misuse. Examples described by the FTC include address-change requests, court or arrest records, new utility or wireless service orders, payday-loan applications, check-cashing requests, social media, and sites used to trade stolen information. Providers search different sources, so ask for the actual coverage list and its limitations.
Recovery services
Some plans offer a counselor or case manager to help review documents, write letters to creditors, or place freezes. Ask what the service will do for you and what you must do yourself. Assistance may cost extra, and contacting institutions or taking other actions on a customer’s behalf may require formal authority.

Identity theft insurance
Insurance may pay certain out-of-pocket recovery costs, lost wages, or legal fees, subject to the policy’s terms. It generally does not repay money stolen by a scammer or cover all financial losses caused by identity theft. Read the policy for deductibles, exclusions, covered expenses, and whether another policy is primary; do not treat a headline coverage limit as a promise that your losses will be reimbursed.
Take these free steps first
Limit disclosure of your child’s information
- Before giving a school or another organization your child’s Social Security number, ask why it is needed, how it will be protected, whether another identifier will work, and whether the last four digits are enough.
- Keep records containing the child’s personal information in a safe place. Shred them before disposal, and delete personal information from old phones or computers before getting rid of them.
Check for a credit file and consider a freeze
Children generally do not have credit reports. A parent or guardian can ask the three nationwide credit reporting companies to search for a minor’s file; a manual search may be necessary, and the bureaus may request supporting documents. Follow each bureau’s current procedure. Be prepared to provide your identification and proof of address, as well as documents such as the child’s birth certificate and Social Security card. A guardian who is not a parent may need proof of legal authority.

A parent or guardian may request a free credit freeze for a child under 16 through each of the three bureaus. The FTC says the freeze remains in place until it is removed. A minor aged 16 or 17 may request and remove a freeze personally. A freeze makes it harder for someone to open new accounts using the child’s information, but it does not block every kind of identity misuse.
Recognize warning signs and respond to suspected misuse
Warning signs
- An overdue bill arrives for an account you did not open.
- Your child is denied government benefits because the Social Security number is already in use.
- You receive an IRS notice about unpaid income taxes tied to your child.
- Your child is denied a student loan because of bad credit.
What to do if you find a fraudulent account
- Contact the company where the account was opened. Ask it to close the account and confirm in writing that your child is not responsible for the debt.
- Contact the credit reporting companies to request removal of fraudulent accounts, and request a credit freeze for the child if applicable.
- Report the identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov and follow its recovery instructions.
Make the decision based on the gap you need to fill
After checking the child’s credit file, considering a freeze, and tightening how personal information is handled, decide whether a paid plan adds useful monitoring or practical recovery help for your family. Choose only after confirming the child’s eligibility, covered sources, check frequency, alert method, exclusions, recovery responsibilities, insurance terms, and total cost. If a provider cannot explain those details clearly, its marketing claims are not enough to judge its protection.
