SteamDB reported that The Outlast Trials reached 94,507 concurrent players on October 4, 2026, during Steam’s 90% Autumn Sale discount. SteamCharts’ captured page showed a lower peak of 71,799 for the same period, so the exact record is tracker-dependent. The timing makes the sale a notable audience-reach moment for Red Barrels, but it does not prove the discount caused the spike or generated a profit.
What happened during the sale?
On October 5, iXBT Games reported a new Steam concurrent-player peak for The Outlast Trials, released on March 5, 2024. The report attributed 94,507 players on October 4 to SteamDB, compared with a launch peak of 36,689. It also said the game ranked fourth among Steam best sellers at the time of publication. That rank is a store-chart position, not a sales total.

Steam’s store listing showed the game at 90% off, with the promotion scheduled to end October 8, 2026. SteamDB’s price history listed $3.99 as the US promotional price and the lowest recorded US price at the time. Prices differ by region; iXBT also cited a 130-ruble Russian price. Neither figure should be read as a universal price.

The reported figures are not consistent across trackers. iXBT Games, citing SteamDB, and an indexed SteamDB curator post reported 94,507 concurrent players on October 4. SteamCharts’ captured page instead showed a 71,799 peak for the period. These are conflicting tracker snapshots, not figures to average or silently treat as interchangeable.

Is The Outlast Trials still active?
The reported peak indicates a substantial burst of concurrent activity on Steam during the sale. The game is a Cold War-set horror title that Steam describes as playable alone or in online co-op teams of two, three, or four. A peak at one moment cannot guarantee current matchmaking activity in a particular region, mode, or later date.

The defensible takeaway is that a steep, time-limited discount coincided with a record reported well after the game’s March 2024 launch. Discounting can be one way to bring a game back into view and attract players, but this example does not isolate the sale’s effect from other possible influences.
Concurrent players, a best-seller chart position, units sold, and financial return are distinct measures. The available figures do not establish how many copies the promotion sold, the revenue Red Barrels received, or whether the discount was profitable. Calling the sale proof that large discounts “pay off” would go beyond what these numbers show.
