Linux Mint’s own guidance recommends 4GB for comfortable use; Xubuntu publishes lower minimum requirements. Neither figure guarantees smooth performance with every workload, so try the live desktop on your laptop before installing.
Which Linux distro is best for a laptop with 4GB RAM?
Start with Linux Mint if you want a full-featured everyday desktop and 4GB is your available memory. Choose Xubuntu if you prefer a lighter desktop environment and are comfortable with its different look and setup. The distinction is about the published requirements and desktop approach—not a claim that one has been benchmarked as faster on your hardware.

| Option | Why it fits a 4GB laptop | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Linux Mint 22.2 | Mint lists 4GB RAM as recommended for comfortable use. | That recommendation is not a performance guarantee; heavy browsing and multitasking can still strain 4GB. |
| Xubuntu | Uses the Xfce desktop, and its published minimum requirements are lower. | A minimum requirement does not predict how modern websites or your own workload will perform. |
Linux Mint 22.2: the comfortable everyday choice
Linux Mint is designed for desktop and laptop computers. Its official FAQ lists 2GB RAM as the minimum and recommends 4GB for comfortable use. It also lists 20GB of disk space as a minimum, 100GB as recommended, and a 1024×768 display resolution. Those are published requirements, not a promise that every 4GB laptop will feel responsive under every workload.
Mint 22.2 was announced on September 4, 2025. The official release announcement says it is supported until 2029. Mint’s FAQ describes five years of support for LTS releases. These details apply to this version and published support information; check Mint’s current release information when choosing an installer later.

Xubuntu: choose Xfce for a lighter desktop direction
Xubuntu is an Ubuntu-based community distribution using the Xfce desktop. The Xfce system requirements page lists minimums for Xubuntu of 512MiB RAM for desktop or live use, a 1.0GHz-or-faster PAE-capable CPU, 7.5GB of disk space, and an 800×600-capable display. These are minimums, not recommended specifications for demanding modern browsing.
The same Xfce page reports a 393.7MiB session footprint for an Xfce 4.14 pre-release measured on Ubuntu 19.10. Treat that only as a historical example from the documentation. It is not a current Xubuntu measurement or a prediction of idle memory use on your laptop.

Xubuntu’s 26.04.1 image directory says the desktop image can be tried without changing the computer and then installed if desired. It lists the 64-bit desktop image as 4.8G. The size refers to the download image, not the disk space Xubuntu needs after installation.

Canonical’s current Ubuntu Desktop download page lists 6GB of system memory, along with a 2GHz dual-core processor or better and 25GB of free disk space. For a strict 4GB limit, that published memory requirement makes standard Ubuntu Desktop a poorer match than Mint or Xubuntu. Ubuntu’s lighter flavors are separate choices; do not assume standard Ubuntu Desktop requirements describe Xubuntu.

Try either distro on your actual laptop before installing
A live USB lets you check whether the operating system and your particular laptop work together before making installation changes. Ubuntu’s installation guidance describes downloading the ISO, writing it to a USB flash drive, and booting from it; it also explains trying Ubuntu without installing. Xubuntu’s image directory likewise says its desktop image can be tried first.
- Get the correct image. Download the installer image for the distro and release you intend to try from its official site.
- Create a bootable USB. Use an image-writing tool to write the ISO to a USB flash drive. This process can erase the drive, so save any files on it first.
- Boot from the USB and select the try option. Use your laptop’s boot menu or firmware settings as needed; exact keys vary by manufacturer.
- Check the hardware you rely on. Test Wi-Fi, audio, display resolution and scaling, suspend and resume, webcam, trackpad, graphics, and battery behavior.
- Back up your personal files before installation. If you decide to install, pay close attention to partitioning choices and confirm that the target drive is correct.
A live session can reveal compatibility issues, but it cannot establish how the laptop will perform in every workload. If you depend on video calls, many browser tabs, or large web apps, try those tasks too: available memory is only one factor, alongside the processor, storage, graphics, and firmware.

How to choose between the two
- Pick Mint 22.2 if you want a familiar, general-purpose desktop and the direct match of Mint’s 4GB comfortable-use recommendation.
- Pick Xubuntu if your priority is the Xfce desktop and its lighter design direction, while understanding that minimum requirements do not promise a particular browsing experience.
- Test both live environments if you are undecided. Your laptop’s Wi-Fi, display, suspend behavior, and day-to-day applications are more useful decision criteria than a historical memory-footprint figure.
