Anki can connect to note-taking tools, but not through one universal, built-in bridge. AnkiWeb syncs an Anki collection across devices; connecting Anki to a separate knowledge base such as Obsidian generally means using AnkiConnect plus a community plugin or a file-based import/export workflow. That distinction is why the stack can feel broken: the pieces exist, but setup, platform requirements, and decisions about which app owns edits are left to the user.
What Anki sync does—and what it does not
AnkiWeb sync keeps an Anki collection synchronized across devices. Under normal circumstances, reviews and note edits made in different places can merge, although Anki documents exceptions. This is synchronization within Anki’s collection, not a general-purpose connection that automatically links cards to notes in every other app.

That difference matters if you write and organize knowledge in a separate notes app. AnkiWeb can carry your collection between Anki clients, but it does not by itself keep a Markdown note and its corresponding Anki card linked or resolve conflicting edits between those separate sources.

Use Anki’s text-file round trip
Anki supports exporting notes as text, editing the fields, and importing the file to update existing notes under documented conditions. For the basic update workflow, keep the first field unchanged and use the same note type. The text-import documentation also describes using a preserved GUID for duplicate checking and updates. See Anki’s exporting guide and text-file import guide for the field-mapping and identity rules.

- Hands-Free Study Flow: Stay focused on learning instead of constantly reaching for your screen. This remote clicker compatible with Anki helps you review flashcards smoothly with one hand, reducing distractions and keeping you in a continuous study flow during long review sessions for medical school, exam prep, language learning, and daily study.
- Full Flashcard Control with Navigation Buttons: Unlike basic ring remotes for anki, BBSDA features 6 intuitive buttons including dedicated up & down navigation controls for long answers, detailed notes, and image-heavy flashcards. Easily rate cards as Again, Hard, Good, or Easy while reviewing without touching your device
- Zero Setup, Designed Specifically for Anki: No drivers, remapping, add-ons, or complicated configuration required. Simply power on, pair once, and start reviewing instantly. Built specifically for Anki users who want a smoother and more beginner-friendly study experience across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, and Windows devices
- Study More Comfortably Anywhere: Review cards while walking, pacing, lying in bed, commuting, relaxing on the couch, or even using a treadmill. The lightweight ergonomic ring design supports natural one-hand thumb control, helping reduce repetitive hand, wrist, and neck strain during extended study sessions
- Built for Serious Daily Review: Quiet tactile buttons allow distraction-free studying in libraries, classrooms, and shared spaces. Rechargeable battery support with smart auto-sleep helps reduce charging interruptions during long review sessions, while the included carrying bag makes it easy to bring your controller for anki anywhere for deep focus learning
This is useful for moving or editing batches of content, but it is a deliberate export-edit-import cycle—not a continuously linked knowledge base. If identifying data changes or the import is mapped incorrectly, the intended update may not behave as expected.
Use AnkiConnect with an app-specific integration
Anki’s self-hosted sync-server documentation points people seeking an API solution to AnkiConnect. The self-hosted server is described as an advanced feature intended for individual or family use, and Anki cautions that third-party sync servers can lag behind protocol changes. AnkiConnect is therefore a separate API route, not a feature of AnkiWeb collection sync.

In Obsidian, community listings describe several plugins that use AnkiConnect to exchange information between Markdown notes and Anki. They are distinct integrations, with different behaviors and prerequisites; they should not be treated as one supported, interchangeable Anki feature.

|---|---|---|
| Anki Forge | Create and update cards from Markdown, preview changes before applying them, and bring Anki edits back when opening a note. | Desktop Obsidian, Anki, and AnkiConnect are required. Anki must be open during sync. The listing says card text and media go only to the configured AnkiConnect endpoint. |
| Anki Flashcard Sync | Author cloze, question-and-answer, code-practice, and image-occlusion cards in Markdown. The listing describes stable IDs intended to preserve review history on later updates. | Desktop requirements are stated in the listing; it uses AnkiConnect. The cited description does not establish a workflow for bringing Anki-side edits back into Markdown. |
| Anki AST Sync | Sync the current note or a vault and use dry-run commands to inspect changes. | Desktop Anki and AnkiConnect are required. The listing does not establish bidirectional editing behavior. |

What to check before trusting a sync workflow
A “sync” label does not tell you which app wins when the same content changes in both places, whether deleting a source note deletes a card, or whether card identity and review history survive updates. Check those behaviors in the specific plugin’s documentation before relying on it for an established collection.
- Direction: Does it create or update cards from Markdown only, or can edits made in Anki return to the source note?
- Identity: Does it match an existing note reliably so an update changes that note rather than creating a duplicate? If preserving review history matters, look for an explicit stable-ID mechanism.
- Safety: Can you preview additions, updates, and deletions, or run a dry run before applying changes?
- Content: Confirm support for the card formats and content you use, such as cloze deletions, images, code, math, tags, or formatting.
- Setup: Check whether the workflow requires desktop apps, AnkiConnect configuration, or Anki to remain open while syncing.
- Conflicts and deletion: Establish which copy is authoritative if both apps change, and what happens when a card or source note is removed.
Try the workflow with a small, disposable set of notes before applying it to a large collection. A preview or dry run can help, but it does not replace checking the resulting cards and confirming how updates affect existing notes.

So, is the note-taking stack broken?
Not in the literal sense: Anki has an API route, text-file imports and exports, and Obsidian has multiple listed integrations. The gap is that a dependable connection is not delivered as one broadly supported, easy-to-understand workflow. Users must assemble the bridge and understand its setup, direction of travel, identity rules, and conflict behavior.
That makes “broken” a fair description of the friction some workflows expose, not proof that Anki cannot talk to notes or that every integration fails. A user discussion can illustrate one person’s custom workflow, but it cannot establish how common problems are across the user base. The product opportunity is a simpler, more predictable connection that makes edit ownership and deletion behavior clear.
