Microsoft said the experience was an incubation project that reached Windows PCs more broadly than intended. It is not a replacement for the OneDrive desktop sync client, and Microsoft has not announced it as a replacement for Windows Photos.
That distinction matters if you are deciding whether to use or remove it. Keep the regular OneDrive sync client if you rely on automatic file backup or File Explorer integration; identify the exact app before uninstalling anything called OneDrive.
What is the new OneDrive app?
“New OneDrive app” is an informal name for a developing OneDrive Photos experience in Windows. Microsoft described it as an incubation project, not as a finished replacement for the existing sync client. Its purpose is to put photos and videos in a gallery-style interface alongside OneDrive content. Microsoft’s current OneDrive download page says the standard OneDrive app is already installed on Windows 11, but that does not mean every PC has the new Photos experience enabled.
Microsoft acknowledged on August 10, 2026, that the Photos experience had rolled out more broadly into Windows than intended and said it was correcting the distribution. See the report on Microsoft’s statement. The new experience may appear through an existing OneDrive installation rather than through a deliberate download, and availability can vary by device and rollout.

How it differs from OneDrive sync and Windows Photos
These products have overlapping names but different jobs. Microsoft distinguishes its Windows OneDrive sync client from its Store app; the new Photos experience is a developing, gallery-focused addition, whose final boundaries and availability are not fully documented.
| Product | Main purpose | Backs up or syncs files? |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft OneDrive desktop sync client | Syncs OneDrive files with File Explorer and supports folder backup. | Yes. |
| OneDrive by Microsoft Corporation (Store app) | Lets users view OneDrive content. | No. Microsoft says this app does not back up or sync files. |
| OneDrive Photos experience | Emerging gallery-style photo and video browsing experience associated with OneDrive. | It is not the sync engine; use the desktop sync client for synchronization. |
| Microsoft Photos | Windows app for viewing, organizing, and editing images and videos, including supported cloud-linked content. | No standalone OneDrive synchronization. |
| OneDrive website | Accesses and manages cloud files and photos in a browser. | No local synchronization by itself. |
For Microsoft’s description of the two established Windows OneDrive apps, see Which OneDrive app? Microsoft Photos continues to be documented as a Windows photo app, and Microsoft has said users will retain a choice about using OneDrive with Photos. There is no verified announcement that OneDrive Photos replaces it.

What features does OneDrive Photos offer?
Gallery browsing and organization
OneDrive’s documented Gallery can help users browse and find photos using details such as date, location, recognized content, and whether an item is a video, screenshot, or document. These are OneDrive photo-organization capabilities; they should not be taken as a complete specification for every version of the emerging Windows experience. Microsoft’s guide is at Organize and find photos in OneDrive.
Windows interface and editing
Reporting on development builds described a modern Windows interface with photo and video browsing, file management, and editing. Because Microsoft has not published a final feature specification, the layout and available controls may differ by build. Do not assume that this experience includes the full editing toolkit in Microsoft Photos. Photos documents tools such as cropping, rotation, adjustments, filters, and drawing at Edit photos and videos in Windows.

Some separate Photos AI features have their own requirements: Super Resolution is limited to compatible Copilot+ PCs, while editing with Designer requires an internet connection. Those requirements apply to the documented Photos features, not automatically to every OneDrive Photos function. See Super Resolution in Photos and Edit images with Designer.
AI Restyle and Copilot
Microsoft documents AI Restyle for OneDrive Photos as a way to apply artistic styles to existing images. It is cloud-processed, not an entirely local or offline edit: a temporary processing copy is sent to a Microsoft-managed AI service, and the result is returned to OneDrive for preview or optional saving. Microsoft says these processed photos are not used to train, improve, fine-tune, or evaluate its generative AI models. The statement is specific to AI Restyle and should not be generalized to all OneDrive search, indexing, or future AI functions. Details are in Microsoft’s AI Restyle transparency note.

OneDrive release notes also describe Copilot actions for eligible users, including summarizing documents, generating FAQs, comparing files, and asking questions about OneDrive content. Availability depends on the feature, account, and eligible subscription; these capabilities are not included for every free OneDrive user. Microsoft tracks changes at OneDrive release notes.
Who can use it, and what does it require?
The Photos experience is being rolled out, so its presence and features can depend on the Windows and OneDrive builds, account type, and organizational policy. A work or school administrator may restrict personal Microsoft account sign-in. Microsoft said administrative controls for personal-account sign-in in the Photos experience were being added; their availability should be checked with the organization rather than assumed on every managed PC. The rollout and controls are described in the report on removal and administration plans.

For the standard OneDrive desktop app, Microsoft lists Windows 11 (32-bit and 64-bit), Windows 10 22H2, and Windows 10/11 ARM-based PCs among supported systems. Its listed baseline includes a 1.6 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM; an internet connection is recommended, and Windows requires NTFS. Microsoft says desktop-app support for Windows 10 version 21H2 and earlier ended on August 15, 2026. These are requirements for the OneDrive desktop app, not a guarantee that the emerging Photos experience is available on every supported device. Check OneDrive system requirements.
- AI features may require internet access, a supported region, compatible hardware, or an eligible subscription.
- Copilot actions are limited to eligible users and account plans.
- Managed-device policies can limit sign-in or feature access.
- A photo stored outside OneDrive’s Pictures library may not appear automatically in Windows Photos. Microsoft says users may need to add other OneDrive folders to Photos; see Changes in the new Photos app.
How to identify which OneDrive app is installed
- Open Start, then Settings.
- Select Apps and search for OneDrive.
- Read the full app name. Microsoft OneDrive is the desktop backup and sync client; OneDrive by Microsoft Corporation is the Store viewing app. Do not assume every result named OneDrive is interchangeable.
To check the desktop client’s version, select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area, open Help and Settings, choose Settings, then open About. In the Store app, open Settings and select About. The local About screen is the useful version check because published version information can lag or differ across Microsoft support surfaces.
Can you remove the new Photos experience safely?
Microsoft said it planned to let users uninstall the OneDrive Photos experience separately, without removing OneDrive or interrupting sync and without deleting OneDrive files or photos. The reported rollout timing was subject to change, and the independent removal control may not be present on every PC. Do not follow a generic instruction to uninstall “OneDrive” unless you have confirmed which component it targets.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for OneDrive or Photos to see which entries are actually present.
- If a clearly separate OneDrive Photos entry and its uninstall control are available, use that entry rather than removing the Microsoft OneDrive sync client.
- If there is no separate removal option, do not delete OneDrive folders manually or uninstall every OneDrive result. Check for available Windows, OneDrive, and Photos updates; on a managed PC, ask IT about policy controls.
The exact final uninstall path has not been established for all builds. If your aim is to stop synchronization rather than remove only the Photos experience, use OneDrive’s own sync settings and understand the effect on backed-up folders before changing them.

| Potential benefit | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|
| Cloud access to a OneDrive photo library across devices. | Access and many functions depend on account sign-in and an internet connection. |
| Gallery browsing and organization features. | Search or recognized-content labels may not always classify images as expected. |
| Optional AI editing such as Restyle. | Restyle sends a temporary copy to Microsoft’s cloud for processing; other AI features may have separate hardware, region, or subscription rules. |
| Integration with Windows and Microsoft services. | Similar product names can make it harder to distinguish the gallery experience from the sync client and Photos. |
| Automatic availability through a broad rollout. | You may see it before you chose to use it, and removal controls may not yet be available on your build. |
It is most useful if your photos already live in OneDrive and you want a cloud-connected gallery. A local-only workflow, strict limits on cloud processing, a work-device policy, or reliance on another photo library may make it a poor fit. You do not need to buy Microsoft 365 merely to install or view the experience; paid plans may matter for extra storage or particular eligible features. Microsoft’s US OneDrive page listed Microsoft 365 Basic at $19.99 per year for 100 GB as of August 18, 2026; price, taxes, promotions, and availability can vary by region and date. See OneDrive plans.
