Apple Watch Ultra 3 is Apple’s current premium outdoor smartwatch. Unveiled on September 9, 2025 and released September 19, it starts at $799 in the U.S. The 49mm titanium watch adds satellite communication, 5G cellular, a brighter wide-angle display, new health insights and longer battery estimates. It requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later.
It is the best Apple Watch for serious outdoor use, diving and users who want cellular freedom. It is excessive for casual notification and fitness tracking, and it still cannot match Garmin’s longest battery life.
Important date clarification
Despite headlines describing a “new” Ultra, Apple Watch Ultra 3 is not an August 2026 launch. Apple announced it on September 9, 2025, and it went on sale September 19, 2025. Apple continues to list the 49mm model from $799 in the U.S. See Apple’s announcement and current store listing.

What changed in Ultra 3?
Satellite communication
When cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable, Ultra 3 can contact emergency services by satellite, send messages and share location. Emergency SOS via satellite does not require a cellular plan. Apple says messaging and location sharing require an active cellular plan, and the satellite features are included for two years under its launch terms. Availability depends on country, language, regulation and sky visibility. You must follow the on-screen positioning guidance, and a clear view of the sky is essential.
This is not an unlimited satellite phone or a substitute for a dedicated communicator such as Garmin inReach. Remote-area users should still carry appropriate equipment and file a trip plan. Independent reviews have reported regional limitations; see Wareable and DC Rainmaker.
5G cellular and reception
Ultra 3 adds 5G hardware and an antenna design that can use both system antennas when reception is weak. A compatible carrier and activated Apple Watch plan are still required. Device financing, activation fees, taxes and monthly service vary, so compare the total 24- or 36-month cost rather than an advertised installment.

Display improvements
Apple says the active display area is larger because the borders are 24% thinner, without changing the case size. The wide-angle OLED is designed to remain easier to read off-axis, and supported faces can show ticking seconds with a 1Hz always-on refresh.
Battery and charging
Apple’s figures are maximum estimates under its test conditions:
| Use or charging mode | Apple’s stated result |
|---|---|
| Normal use | Up to 42 hours |
| Low Power Mode | Up to 72 hours |
| Outdoor workout in Low Power Mode with full GPS and heart-rate readings | Up to 20 hours |
| 15-minute charge | Up to 12 hours of battery life |
| 0–80% charge | About 45 minutes |
Independent tests generally find an improvement over earlier Ultra models, but GPS, cellular use, music streaming, brightness, cold temperatures and long workouts reduce runtime. Some reviewers measured roughly 5–6% consumption per hour during particular GPS workouts; results vary by settings and activity. Ultra 3 can cover many weekends if you charge before leaving, but it is not a multi-week expedition watch.
Health and watchOS features
- Hypertension notifications that look for patterns suggestive of chronic high blood pressure
- Sleep score
- Updated Workout app, training load, heart-rate zones, running power and custom workouts
- Workout Buddy, an Apple Intelligence-powered coaching feature where supported
- watchOS 26’s Liquid Glass interface, Live Translation and notification-dismissal wrist flick
- On-device Siri access to health data, subject to software and device requirements
Many watchOS 26 capabilities also reach older supported watches; they are not all Ultra 3-exclusive.

Fitness, navigation and diving
Ultra 3 supports dual-frequency GPS, route and waypoint navigation, advanced running, cycling, swimming and hiking metrics, heart-rate zones, training load, running power and custom workouts. Cellular service enables calls, messages, music and emergency connectivity without carrying an iPhone.
Its depth gauge, water-temperature sensor, WR100 rating and 40-metre recreational scuba rating suit swimming, snorkelling, scuba and high-speed water sports within those limits. Water resistance is not an invitation to exceed the stated depth or use the watch for every professional diving environment.
Apple markets its GPS as highly precise, but independent GPS and heart-rate results depend on route, firmware, sensors and comparison equipment. Reviews from TechRadar and DC Rainmaker should be read as tests under their specific conditions, not a universal accuracy guarantee.

Health features: useful alerts, not diagnoses
Hypertension notifications identify patterns that may warrant follow-up; they do not measure blood pressure like a cuff or diagnose hypertension. ECG, irregular-rhythm, sleep-apnoea, temperature and cycle features vary by country and regulatory authorisation. Availability, language and interpretation can change, so check Apple’s regional support information before relying on a feature. Seek clinical measurement and medical advice for symptoms or abnormal results.
Ultra 3 versus Ultra 2
Use Apple’s comparison tool for the current model table. The upgrade is most compelling if you need satellite communication, 5G, the larger active display, improved battery estimates or newly supported health features.
Ultra 2 remains sensible if LTE already meets your needs, its battery is sufficient and you value the same titanium construction, GPS, diving and core health functions. A substantially discounted Ultra 2 can be the better purchase.

| Model | Current U.S. starting price | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch SE 3 | $249 | Value-focused users needing core smartwatch and fitness features |
| Apple Watch Series 11 | $399 | Most users wanting a thinner mainstream Apple Watch |
| Apple Watch Ultra 3 | $799 | Outdoor sports, diving, satellite safety, dual-frequency GPS and longest Apple Watch battery |
Ultra 3 adds titanium, a 49mm case, brighter display, WR100 water resistance, diving support, satellite communication and longer battery estimates. For notifications, workouts, sleep tracking and Apple Pay, Series 11 or SE 3 is usually better value.

Ultra 3 versus Garmin
Garmin’s Fenix-class watches are the stronger choice for multi-day or multi-week battery life, physical controls, training depth and platform flexibility. Apple is stronger for iPhone integration, apps, calls, messaging, payments and general smartwatch convenience. Comparisons should identify the exact Garmin model, battery mode and subscription assumptions; do not treat either brand as universally superior. See TechRadar’s comparison and Tom’s Guide’s account.
Ownership costs and practical checks
- Cellular: optional, requires a compatible carrier plan; compare full contract cost. Verizon and AT&T offer purchase pathways at Verizon and AT&T.
- Protection: AppleCare+ is optional and covers eligible accidental damage and service; current price and terms are shown at Apple’s AppleCare page.
- Bands: Trail, Alpine, Ocean and Hermès choices differ in comfort, use case and price.
- Satellite: Apple’s two-year inclusion is subject to its stated terms; do not assume future pricing or unlimited service.
- Used purchases: verify Activation Lock status, battery health, cellular compatibility and regional support before paying.
Who should buy Apple Watch Ultra 3?
Buy it if
- You use an iPhone and want Apple’s most capable watch.
- You regularly hike, run, cycle, ski, dive, travel or train outdoors.
- Satellite emergency tools or cellular independence have genuine value.
- You accept charging every day or few days instead of every few weeks.
Skip it if
- You use Android; Apple Watch is not a general Android-compatible watch.
- You mainly need notifications, basic workouts, sleep tracking and payments.
- You need expedition-grade, multi-week battery or a dedicated satellite communicator.
- The 49mm case is uncomfortable or the $799 price plus service and accessories exceeds your budget.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Apple Watch Ultra 3 work without an iPhone?
No. Setup requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. Cellular features can reduce how often you carry the iPhone, but they do not remove the setup requirement.
Is satellite messaging included forever?
Apple announced satellite communication features as free for two years with Ultra 3. Coverage, eligible features and any post-period pricing depend on Apple’s current terms and region.
Can Ultra 3 replace a blood-pressure monitor?
No. Hypertension notifications are an alerting feature, not a cuff measurement or diagnosis.
The Bottom Line
Apple Watch Ultra 3 is worth the premium for iPhone users who will use its satellite safety tools, cellular connectivity, rugged 49mm design, diving features or outdoor navigation. For casual users, Series 11 or SE 3 costs far less; for extreme endurance and charging-free expeditions, Garmin or a dedicated satellite communicator remains the better fit.
