The Network Settings I Changed After Realizing My Printer Could Reach Other Devices

A printer on your Wi-Fi is not automatically able to read every device’s files. Check your router’s isolation controls, test printing across networks, and keep printer firmware and passwords up to date.

A printer connected to your home network has network communications—but that does not mean it can automatically read every computer’s files or that anyone has compromised it. “See everything” is a useful prompt to check which devices it can communicate with and what controls your router and printer provide.

What a network connection does—and does not—allow

Devices on a network may be able to communicate with one another, depending on the network’s configuration and the services each device allows. Being on the same Wi-Fi is not proof that a printer can browse your files, nor is it evidence that an attacker has accessed the printer. The practical security question is which communication paths are permitted and whether the printer needs them.

NIST describes Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) as a way for compatible devices and networks to allow communications needed for a device’s intended function and block other traffic. That illustrates the principle of limiting access, but MUD is a technical mechanism—not a standard setting available on every home router. NIST SP 1800-15 (May 2021) explains the approach.

Why consider a separate guest or IoT network?

Network segmentation puts devices into separate groups so that fewer pathways connect them. CISA describes dividing a home wireless network into groups such as guests, IoT devices, personal computers, and work computers. A guest Wi-Fi network can be a simple way to separate devices, although some configurations are more complex. The behavior and isolation provided by a guest network vary by router, so its name alone is not a guarantee. CISA’s Federal Mobile Workplace Security guidance discusses the approach.

Putting a printer on a separate network may reduce its direct access to devices on your main network, if your router actually isolates the networks. The trade-off is that computers on the main network may no longer discover or print to it automatically. Whether printing works across the boundary depends on the router, printer, and setup.

How to check your router and printer before changing networks

  1. Read the router’s documentation. Look for a guest network or IoT network and confirm what it isolates. Check whether devices on that network are blocked from reaching the main local network, rather than assuming that “guest” means isolated.
  2. Check the printer’s manual and current setup. Find the instructions for connecting it to Wi-Fi and for discovery or printing from the computers and phones you use. Do not assume those functions work across separate networks.
  3. Make the change using the router’s documented controls. Router labels and menus differ, so follow the instructions for your specific model rather than relying on a generic menu path.
  4. Test the result. From each device you normally print from, check that the printer is discoverable and that a routine print works. If not, consult both manuals for supported cross-network printing options or restore the previous network arrangement.

NIST’s SP 1800-36, published in November 2025, describes verifying device and network identity and managing device posture during onboarding and over time. It provides background on secure device onboarding, not a home-printer setup recipe.

Maintain the printer itself

Network separation is only one layer. Follow your printer maker’s instructions to change default or administrator passwords, install firmware updates, and disable features you do not use. HP’s consumer guidance recommends these steps and also discusses separating less-secure IoT devices with a guest network or VLAN; use the documentation for your own printer rather than treating one manufacturer’s directions as universal. HP’s home-printer security guidance is one example.

What this change can—and cannot—establish

Restricting network pathways can reduce exposure, but it cannot make a home network invulnerable. The guidance cited here does not establish that any particular reader’s printer is compromised, quantify the risk for home printers, or show that a specific router and printer will work together across network boundaries. Those questions require checking the devices and their documentation.
