No single universal remote is guaranteed to work with every Roku product. Roku’s universal-remote codes are for Roku TV systems; a separate Roku streaming player generally needs a compatible Roku remote paired wirelessly. Start by identifying which kind of Roku device you have, then choose the setup path that matches it.
First identify your Roku device
If the Roku interface is built into your television, you have a Roku TV. If Roku runs from a separate box or stick connected to the TV, you have a Roku streaming player. The distinction matters: a universal remote code is a TV-control setup, while a Roku voice remote pairs with a compatible Roku device.

Using a universal remote with a Roku TV
Roku Support’s Roku TV universal-remote guide lists codes for certain cable, satellite, and universal remotes. The guide includes brands such as GE, Inteset, onn., and RCA/Voxx. For example, it lists GE code 2891, Inteset code 10885, and onn. codes 2891 or 3851, with 3201 as an alternate. These are examples from Roku’s chart, not a promise that every remote model from those brands will work. Check the current chart and the instructions for your exact remote.
- Find your remote brand in Roku’s chart and note the code or codes shown.
- Follow the remote manufacturer’s programming procedure. Roku’s example uses the Setup button, or the documented alternative, then entry of a four- or five-digit code.
- Test the controls you need, especially power and volume. If the first code fails, try another code listed for the brand.
A successful code may enable only basic TV controls such as power, volume, or input. Some remotes also support Roku navigation, including Home, directional arrows, Back, and playback functions, but support varies by remote. Roku cautions that not every remote supports all TV controls. If full Roku navigation matters, confirm that the exact remote model supports those functions rather than relying only on the word “universal.”

Using a remote with a separate Roku streaming player
For a Roku player, check the exact device model against Roku’s voice remote compatibility guidance. Roku says to find the model at Settings > System > About. Its compatibility page is the best place to check current support; some older devices not shown in its table may have limited voice capability. The table is published on a Roku UK support page, so do not assume retail availability or feature packaging is identical in every country.
Roku voice remotes connect to compatible players and Roku TV systems by wireless pairing, not by entering a universal-remote code. Roku’s pairing instructions give two approaches:

- On the Roku device, open Settings > Remotes & devices > Add devices > Remote, then follow the on-screen steps.
- Alternatively, restart the Roku device and put the voice remote into pairing mode. If it has a pairing button, it is commonly on the back or beneath the battery cover; hold it for five seconds until the status light flashes. For a remote without that button, hold Back and Home together for five seconds.
If pairing does not complete, make sure the remote and Roku device are both in pairing mode at the same time, then follow the on-screen prompts again.

Pairing a voice remote to a Roku player does not automatically mean it can control the television. Some Roku voice remotes can be configured for TV power and volume, but the result depends on the remote and television. Roku notes that some TVs support volume control but not power control. Its TV-control setup guidance describes listening for a test sound while the remote finds settings; HDMI-CEC settings may also affect operation.

If you do not have a working remote
Roku identifies its mobile app as an alternative way to control a Roku device. It can be useful while you check compatibility or arrange a replacement; Roku’s pairing and remote guidance describes the app as another control option.
