A Digimon must meet at least three of four condition groups, then reach its stage’s evolution age; if several forms qualify, the game’s priority calculation can decide the result. A community guide also reports a timing quirk in which a battle can make an hour fail to count toward evolution.
Why the Digimon you wanted did not appear
For an ordinary natural evolution, the GameFAQs guide by SydMontague describes four condition groups: required stats, target weight, care mistakes, and a bonus condition. A candidate needs to meet at least three of the four. That makes evolution a qualification system rather than a single-stat threshold.

Each group has its own rules. The stats group generally requires every listed stat threshold; stats not listed for a candidate are ignored. For a Rookie evolution, the guide adds a qualification: the stats group counts only when at least one of that Digimon’s required stats is currently its highest stat.
Qualifying does not guarantee that candidate will be selected. When multiple forms meet the requirements at the evolution trigger, the guide says the game checks candidates in chart order and calculates a priority score. For Champion and Ultimate outcomes, the score is based on required stats, with carry-over from earlier candidates. For Rookie outcomes, it is based on how many condition groups are met; the stats group counts only if the current highest stat is one the candidate requires. So a Digimon can qualify for a desired route and still evolve into another eligible form.

How long evolution takes
The guide’s evolution counter advances by one for each fully passed in-game hour. Its listed natural evolution thresholds are:
| Stage change | Guide-reported threshold |
|---|---|
| Fresh to In-Training | 6 in-game hours — GameFAQs guide by SydMontague, version 1.3.7, updated 2026-02-01 |
| In-Training to Rookie | 24 in-game hours — GameFAQs guide by SydMontague, version 1.3.7, updated 2026-02-01 |
| Rookie to Champion | 72 in-game hours — GameFAQs guide by SydMontague, version 1.3.7, updated 2026-02-01 |
| Champion to Ultimate | 144 in-game hours — GameFAQs guide by SydMontague, version 1.3.7, updated 2026-02-01 |
These are guide-reported game-mechanic values, not real-world time estimates. Sleep also adds a fixed amount to the counter according to the guide’s stage-based table, regardless of how long the Digimon sleeps. Taking advantage of that can reduce sleep’s restorative effect and may cost happiness or discipline, so it is not a free substitute for elapsed time.

What counts as a care mistake
The guide defines care mistakes narrowly. It lists three types: leaving poop on the ground; failing to put the Digimon to sleep for the full cycle by its usual wake time; and not feeding it within 90 in-game minutes after hunger appears, subject to the guide’s nourishment qualification. Letting hunger reach zero during a time-skipping action can count as two mistakes, according to the same guide.
Care mistakes are counted for the Digimon’s current form and reset when it evolves. The guide says tiredness, sickness, and losing battles do not count as care mistakes. That distinction matters when a candidate requires a minimum or maximum number of mistakes: general neglect or a bad battle outcome is not necessarily relevant to that counter.

Weight and bonus conditions are separate checks
Weight is its own condition group. The guide reports that a Digimon must be within 5 g above or below a candidate’s target weight for the weight requirement to count. Feeding can increase weight; pooping, sleeping, undernourishment, and some foods can reduce it.
The bonus group varies by candidate. It can require a minimum happiness or discipline level, a minimum or maximum number of won battles, enough learned techniques, or a species-specific condition. The guide says meeting any one listed bonus condition is enough to satisfy that group; arena battles do not count toward the battle bonus in its account.

When comparing two possible forms, check each independently rather than assuming the desired one is favored by the highest stat alone:
- Which stat thresholds apply, and is a required stat currently the highest?
- What target weight does the candidate require?
- Does it set a minimum or maximum care-mistake count?
- What bonus condition applies, and does a battle count for it?
- Has the Digimon reached the age threshold for that stage?
- Could another qualifying candidate take priority?
Why a battle may appear to delay evolution
The GameFAQs guide reports a timing bug: if a fight causes the clock to cross a whole in-game hour, the evolution counter may not advance for that hour. Its example is starting a battle between minute :40 and :59; the guide says this can delay evolution by one hour. This is a reported quirk from a community guide, not an officially confirmed rule, and it should not be generalized to every battle.

If a Digimon seems one hour late after a fight, this reported behavior is one possible explanation. The same guide’s ordinary rule remains that the counter advances for fully passed in-game hours; a skipped hour is a caveat to that account, not a different evolution requirement.
Special routes do not all follow the ordinary chart
The guide also describes evolutions with conditions outside the standard three-of-four calculation. Examples include Sukamon from a full virus bar, a reported 50% chance of Kunemon when an In-Training Digimon sleeps in Kunemon’s bed, and any Rookie becoming Numemon after 96 hours at Rookie level. Other special routes are tied to events, discipline or happiness, battles, or a particular Digimon.
According to the guide, special evolutions can reset care-mistake and battle counters, while only an evolution that changes level resets the evolution timer. These are community-guide claims; the detailed mechanics are not presented here as official publisher documentation.
