The Memory Trade Cools After Samsung’s Preliminary Results Disappoint

Samsung's preliminary Q3 2026 sales and operating profit were well above last quarter but below consensus, and memory and storage shares slipped. Here is what the figures show and why they remain preliminary.

Memory stocks fell after Samsung Electronics published preliminary third-quarter figures on October 8, 2026, because the headline numbers, though far above the prior quarter’s levels, came in below the consensus estimates that investors had priced in. The reported declines were modest, and the company’s own outlook still described tight memory supply and strong server demand. The selloff reads best as a reaction to a high bar being missed, not as evidence that AI-memory demand has peaked.

What Samsung reported and what the market expected

Samsung’s October 8 release gave preliminary consolidated estimates under K-IFRS: sales of KRW 195 trillion and operating profit of KRW 107.40 trillion for the third quarter of 2026. The company’s Korean release describes these as preliminary estimates provided before the close of accounts, for investor convenience. They are not the final reported results, and they do not include the full segment-level breakdown that the final earnings report will contain.

The consensus figures were different. A Yahoo Finance report by Aaron McDade, citing Visible Alpha estimates, put expected sales at KRW 205.26 trillion and expected operating profit at KRW 112.73 trillion. Those are the report’s description of consensus. The figures were not independently checked against Visible Alpha for this article, and the market reaction described below is taken from that same report.

Measure (Q3 2026) Samsung preliminary estimate Visible Alpha consensus, as cited by Yahoo Finance Gap (derived by this article)
Consolidated sales KRW 195 trillion KRW 205.26 trillion About 5% below consensus
Consolidated operating profit KRW 107.40 trillion KRW 112.73 trillion About 4.7% below consensus

The gap percentages are simple arithmetic on the two sets of figures above. They are not company disclosures. For context, Samsung’s second-quarter results, published July 30, 2026, showed consolidated revenue of KRW 171.5 trillion and operating profit of KRW 89.5 trillion. The preliminary third-quarter sales figure therefore sits roughly 14% above that second-quarter level. The report that discussed the miss did not give a prior-year comparison figure, so this article does not state one.

Which shares fell

The Yahoo Finance report said Sandisk, SK hynix, and Seagate each fell about 3% in the period it covered, and Micron about 2%. These are approximate moves described as recent in that report. They are not closing returns, and this article does not present them as a measured daily series. Because the report is the only source for them, treat them as a snapshot of the reaction rather than a complete account of trading.

The selloff spread across memory and storage names rather than singling out one company. That pattern fits a market-wide reassessment of expectations for the sector, though it does not by itself prove the cause of each individual move.

What Samsung had said about memory demand

The preliminary miss arrived after a strong outlook from the company. In its July 30 release, Samsung said the Memory Business had achieved record quarterly revenue and operating profit in the second quarter, and that industry-wide price increases had contributed to those results. The company stated in that release: “The Memory Business achieved another record-breaking quarter by proactively addressing AI demand despite limited capacity with a primary focus on server products.” Samsung also said server products made up a record share of its Memory Business sales mix.

For the second half of 2026, Samsung expected robust server-centered demand, with growth accelerating in server DRAM, enterprise SSDs (eSSDs), and high-bandwidth memory (HBM). It expected partial demand moderation in mobile and PCs, and said supply constraints would persist despite production-increase efforts. These are management expectations, not independent forecasts, and they were stated before the preliminary third-quarter figures were released.

Why a below-consensus result can hit strong businesses

Share prices move against expectations, not against last year’s numbers. When a company’s results are far above the prior year, the question for investors is whether they beat or fall short of what was already built into the price. Here, the preliminary figures were large and clearly higher than the second quarter, but they fell short of the consensus that the market had been using.

That is the sense in which the trade cooled. The reaction says that sentiment toward memory had risen enough to leave little room for a shortfall. It does not say that orders have dropped, that prices are falling, or that the server demand Samsung described has disappeared. The company’s outlook still pointed to tight supply and strong server demand. A reader who wants to judge the longer-term picture should weigh the outlook and the final results, not the one-day reaction alone.

Why the figures are still preliminary

Samsung’s October 8 release states that its estimates are based on K-IFRS. That wording matters because the preliminary numbers are not final. Final results will be published in the quarterly earnings report, which will include segment-level detail for the Memory Business and the other divisions, along with the adjustments that come with a closed set of accounts.

Samsung’s investor-relations page schedules the third-quarter earnings conference call for 10 a.m. KST on October 29, 2026. That call is the next point at which management can explain the figures in its own words. Any executive commentary should be checked against the official transcript once it is published, since this article does not quote any named executive on the market reaction.

What to watch next

  • The final third-quarter earnings release, which should replace the preliminary sales and operating-profit estimates with reported figures and segment detail.
  • The earnings call on October 29, 2026, for management’s view of server DRAM, eSSD, and HBM demand and of the mobile and PC moderation it flagged in July.
  • Whether peers such as Micron, SK hynix, Sandisk, and Seagate report results or guidance that confirm or challenge the tight-supply picture.

Samsung’s preliminary release and its July outlook are the primary sources for the company’s figures and expectations. The consensus numbers and the share moves come from a single secondary report and should be read with that limit in mind.

The Bottom Line

Samsung’s preliminary third-quarter figures were strong in absolute terms but about 5% below the consensus sales estimate and about 4.7% below the consensus operating-profit estimate cited in the Yahoo Finance report. Memory and storage shares fell by about 2% to 3% in that report. The move reflects a bar that was set high, not a verdict that AI-memory demand has peaked, and the final results and the October 29 call are the events that will settle the question.
