What does the Mac mini cost now?
Apple announced U.S. starting prices of $899 for Mac mini with M6 and $1,699 for Mac mini with M5 Pro on August 25, 2026. Apple said deliveries and store availability would begin September 22. These are launch prices, not a checked quote for a current retailer offer; the final price depends on configuration and may vary by seller.

Is the Mac mini still powerful?
Yes, for the workloads Apple highlights, but the performance figures need their context. Apple says M6 is up to 4.8 times faster than M4 for LLM prompt processing in LM Studio, up to 1.5 times faster for spreadsheet calculations in Excel, and up to twice as fast for ray-traced gaming. These are Apple-reported comparisons against M4 in named workloads, not independent benchmark results; they should not be read as a promise that every task will speed up by those amounts.

Apple’s positioning for the M5 Pro is more demanding work: app development, video rendering, scientific simulations, 3D work, and larger local AI models. It supports up to 64GB of unified memory, according to Apple’s announcement. The higher chip tier is relevant if your software and projects can use that performance or memory headroom; the model name alone does not make the $1,699 starting price worthwhile.
What differs between M6 and M5 Pro?
Apple’s launch announcement gives useful connectivity distinctions alongside the chip tiers. Confirm the exact configuration and options on the live product page before purchase, especially if a particular port, memory capacity, or Ethernet speed is essential.

Which Mac mini should you consider?
Choose M6 if your work fits the standard tier
For everyday computing and workloads that do not call for the Pro model’s positioning, M6 is the lower-priced starting point. Check that the memory, storage, and ports in the configuration you plan to keep will suit your projects over time; the starting price does not establish what a higher-capacity configuration costs.

Video rendering, 3D work, scientific simulations, app development, or larger local AI models are the kinds of tasks Apple identifies for M5 Pro. Compare the actual configured price with the value of the extra performance, memory ceiling, and Thunderbolt 5—not just the chip label. If your needs do not make use of those capabilities, the $800 gap between the two launch starting prices may be hard to justify.

Check the connections you depend on
M6’s listed Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, front USB-C, and 2.5Gb Ethernet may be enough for your setup; 10Gb Ethernet is an option. M5 Pro’s three rear Thunderbolt 5 ports may matter for compatible high-bandwidth peripherals. Make sure the exact configuration meets your wired-network and peripheral requirements before ordering.

The Mac mini remains a capable compact desktop, and Apple’s new models have a clear place for buyers who want macOS in that form factor. It is not as cheap as the older entry configuration: the $899 M6 launch price is above the $799 M4 entry price TechRadar reported in May, after the $599 option was discontinued. Consider M6 for a standard workload and M5 Pro only when its demanding-workload positioning, memory ceiling, or connectivity addresses a real need. Compare the same region, date, chip tier, memory, and storage when checking offers; a starting price is not a like-for-like configuration quote.

Apple’s 2024 launch statement described the earlier model as delivering “gigantic performance in an unbelievably small design,” citing Apple silicon efficiency and a new thermal architecture. That is Apple’s promotional characterization, not an independent assessment.
