That is an unconfirmed rumor, not a release announcement. The concern is what the rumored order could mean for Gold, Silver, and Crystal: a possible delay or omission from the Switch family, not a confirmed decision to leave Johto behind.
What is the Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire rumor?
In a feature published October 2, 2026, ComicBook.com’s Justin Joy reported that the Pokémon leaker account @Light_88_ claimed the original Game Boy Advance games Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire would come to Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on October 8, 2026. The report does not link to the leaker’s original post, and it does not establish independent corroboration or a track record for the account. Read the ComicBook.com feature.

Joy explicitly cautions that the claim is “not confirmed or guaranteed.” The feature also refers to earlier rumors and an official Japanese Pokémon social-media account as suggesting Generation 3 could be next in a retro revival, but it does not identify or quote that post. That account reference, by itself, does not verify the claimed release date, platforms, or release order.
Does this mean Ruby and Sapphire are coming to Switch?
Not on the evidence in the feature. It reports a leaker’s claim; it does not report a confirmed release announcement from Nintendo or The Pokémon Company. Treat October 8, 2026, and both Switch platforms as unverified details rather than a launch plan you can rely on.

The games named in the rumor are the original Game Boy Advance versions. It does not establish whether a future edition would be a direct rerelease, what features it might include, or whether it would arrive at all. In particular, the article mentions Pokémon Emerald and its Battle Frontier, but does not suggest that feature would be included in a possible Ruby and Sapphire release; Joy doubts it would be.
Why could skipping Generation 2 disappoint players?
The concern is about sequence: if players get Generation 1 and then Generation 3 on the Switch family, Generation 2’s Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal could be left out or pushed back. Joy’s argument is that Johto merits a modern library release, not that The Pokémon Company has decided to skip it. He acknowledges that Johto could still arrive later.

Generation 2 introduced the Johto region and 100 new Pokémon. Joy points to its real-time clock, breeding, held items, berries, and the Dark and Steel types as reasons the games remain distinctive. After the Johto League, players can return to Kanto; Crystal also lets players choose a female protagonist. These are features of the original games, not promises about what any future Switch version would preserve.
For players who want to revisit the games now, the originals are Game Boy Color titles, while Ruby and Sapphire are Game Boy Advance titles. Older handhelds and cartridges may be costly, Joy argues, making official modern releases a more convenient option for some players; the feature gives no price figures. Original Ruby and Sapphire cartridges are not the rumored Switch product.
