A last-write-wins (LWW) resolver does not necessarily preserve the update that happened latest. It preserves the update that wins its configured comparison—often the one with the higher timestamp. If that timestamp comes from unsynchronized physical clocks, it may not reflect real-time order or causality. That can make an earlier write survive while a later one disappears.
This is a deliberate trade-off, not a flaw in every use of LWW. It can suit data where one winner is useful and losing a competing value is acceptable. It is risky when every update matters or when the application must interpret concurrent changes.

What “last” means in last-write-wins
In an LWW resolver, “last” means highest according to the system’s configured ordering rule. When the rule compares physical timestamps, the winner is the write carrying the greater timestamp. That does not prove it was written later in real time, nor that it causally followed another write.

How clock skew can make the later update lose
- Two replicas accept writes to the same key. One update happens after the other, but the replicas’ physical clocks are not aligned.
- The replica handling the later update has a clock that is behind, so it assigns a smaller timestamp.
- When replicas reconcile, the LWW rule selects the larger timestamp.
- The earlier update therefore survives, and the later update is discarded.
This is an ordering failure, not necessarily a failure to persist or replicate the write. The write can reach the system and still lose when competing values are resolved.
The outcome may be silent: the key appears to have an ordinary resolved value, even though another write was discarded. Riak documents that its LWW option drops some concurrent writes to avoid creating siblings. Its documentation puts the trade-off plainly: “The problem with LWW is that it will necessarily drop some writes in the case of concurrent updates in the name of preventing sibling creation.” Riak’s conflict-resolution documentation.

When losing a competing write is an acceptable trade-off
LWW can be reasonable when the application wants a single value and can tolerate a competing update being discarded. Riak lists caching, session storage, and insert-only data as possible fits. These are examples, not a guarantee that every cache or session workload is safe: the right choice depends on what the data represents and what losing an update would mean.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIt is a poor fit when users or downstream systems need to reason about different concurrent values. Riak distinguishes choosing a database winner from exposing siblings for application-level handling. A single resolved value is convenient, but it removes the opportunity to inspect the discarded alternative through that resolved state.

Choose a conflict strategy that matches the data
| Approach | What happens to concurrent values | Who decides the outcome | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last-write-wins | Keeps one value and discards competing values according to the configured ordering rule. | The database or resolver chooses the winner. | Simple single-value reads, but an update can be lost. |
| Multi-value register or retained siblings | Preserves concurrent values rather than collapsing them immediately. | The application can inspect and resolve them. | Preserves choices, but requires application logic to interpret concurrency. |
| Data-type-specific merge | Combines changes according to the chosen data type’s merge semantics. | The data type’s rules determine the merged result. | Can avoid arbitrary winner selection, but only fits when those semantics match the data. |
| Hybrid logical clock ordering | Still orders timestamps for LWW; it does not inherently preserve every concurrent value. | The implementation’s resolver chooses the winner. | Adds a logical component to timestamp ordering, but does not settle the application-level meaning of a conflict. |
A multi-value approach is useful only if the application can make a meaningful decision with the values it receives. A merge is safe only when its rules reflect the domain. Neither is a universal replacement for LWW.
Why hybrid logical clocks help—and what they do not solve
A hybrid logical clock (HLC) combines a physical-time component with a logical component to improve timestamp ordering in a particular implementation. Couchbase documents that Sync Gateway 4.0 and later uses HLC timestamp comparison for LWW. That is a version-specific product behavior, not a general guarantee about every database called LWW. Couchbase Sync Gateway conflict-resolution documentation.

HLC ordering does not make conflicts disappear or decide what a concurrent change means to a user. It provides an ordering mechanism; the resolver still selects a winner under its rules. Couchbase also documents clock-synchronization expectations in its XDCR context, so check the product documentation for the exact versions and replication topology in use rather than assuming the Sync Gateway behavior applies to all Couchbase replication.

What to check before relying on LWW
- Resolver: Find the exact conflict policy and comparison rule. “LWW” alone does not specify all implementation details.
- Timestamp source: Determine whether timestamps come from physical clocks, a hybrid logical clock, or another mechanism.
- Version and topology: Confirm the database version, replication path, and product-specific compatibility requirements.
- Concurrency: Establish whether multiple replicas or clients can update the same key before changes are reconciled.
- Loss tolerance: Ask what happens if one competing write is discarded. A cache value and user-authored or financial state can have very different consequences.
- Recovery: Check whether logs, event history, or retained siblings preserve enough information to recover an update after resolution.
If losing an update is unacceptable, use a design that exposes concurrent values or merges them according to suitable data semantics instead of assuming physical timestamps encode causality. Consider HLC only where the implementation supports it and timestamp-based winner selection is still the intended policy.

How to describe an LWW loss in an incident report
Keep the report tied to observable evidence. Identify the competing updates, the timestamps assigned by the relevant nodes, the resolver’s comparison rule, and which value won. Then record whether the discarded value was recoverable from logs, history, or retained siblings. A higher timestamp alone is not evidence that its update happened later in real time or causally followed the losing one.
