The junior developer path is getting harder to enter, but the evidence does not show that junior developer work has vanished. Job postings, early-career employment studies and long-run occupational projections measure different things. Taken together, they point to a tighter market and scarce junior-labeled openings—not proof that AI has eliminated entry-level software jobs.
What do the job-posting numbers show?
Indeed Hiring Lab’s figures describe postings on its platform, not every vacancy or hire. Title categories also matter: an entry-level opening may not use the word “junior.” The figures show how advertised titles and requirements have shifted, but they cannot tell us exactly how many new developers employers hired.

| Measure | Finding | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Standard and junior tech-title postings | 34% below February 2020 | U.S. tech postings in February 2025 compared with February 2020; Indeed Hiring Lab, 2025. The measure groups standard and junior titles. |
| Senior and manager tech-title postings | 19% below February 2020 | U.S. tech postings in February 2025 compared with February 2020; Indeed Hiring Lab, 2025. The measure groups senior and manager titles. |
| Tech postings requiring at least five years of experience | 37% in Q2 2022; 42% in Q2 2025 | Share of tech postings, not software-development postings alone; Indeed Hiring Lab, 2025. |
| Software-development postings advertising a senior title | 30.7% | Share of Indeed software-development postings in August 2025; Indeed Hiring Lab. |
| Software-development postings advertising a junior title | 2% | Share of Indeed software-development postings in August 2025; Indeed Hiring Lab. |
The August 2025 title split is the clearest snapshot of how scarce explicitly junior-labeled software-development postings were on Indeed. It does not mean that only that share of hires were junior, that all other postings required senior-level skills, or that openings without a junior label were closed to newcomers.

Both standard/junior and senior/manager tech-title postings were below their February 2020 levels by February 2025. Indeed notes that senior postings grew more during the hiring boom through 2022, which affects where the categories stood later; neither figure by itself isolates the cause of the subsequent pullback. The experience-requirement trend is another sign of tougher stated conditions, but it applies to tech postings broadly, not just software-development roles.

Are entry-level software developer jobs disappearing?
The evidence supports “harder to find and enter,” not “gone.” A posting count is not a hiring count, and a title-based measure misses roles advertised under other names. The junior-title share is therefore a signal about visible, explicitly labeled openings on one platform—not a census of every first-job opportunity.
Indeed also reported that junior software-development roles fell in raw numbers year over year in its August 2025 analysis. In most sectors, however, their share of postings did not fall faster than the overall market. That distinction matters: a category can lose openings as the market contracts without being uniquely targeted for cuts.
Is AI eliminating junior developer jobs?
A 2026 U.S. Census Bureau Center for Economic Studies working paper found a regression-adjusted 12% employment decline for workers aged 22–24 in the most AI-exposed industry-state quintile over the 10 quarters after ChatGPT’s release. Employment in less-exposed industries remained stable in the paper’s comparison. This is evidence of a concerning early-career pattern associated with exposure; it is not a direct count of junior software engineers or a finding that AI alone caused their employment decline.

It also estimates that monetary-policy shocks could explain up to one quarter of relative early-career employment declines through 2025 Q2. Because the analysis groups workers by age and industry-state exposure, it cannot isolate AI’s effect on junior software hiring. A wider hiring slowdown, the post-boom reset and changing experience requirements are also relevant context.

Does the software-developer outlook contradict a tougher entry-level market?
No. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2026 Occupational Outlook Handbook projects software developer employment to grow 10% from 2025 to 2035. It projects about 106,100 annual openings over that period for the combined group of software developers, QA analysts and testers. These are occupation-level projections, not counts of junior postings or new-graduate jobs. Many openings are expected to come from replacing people who leave an occupation or the labor force.
Long-run employment growth can coexist with difficulty getting a first job. The projection describes the expected size and openings of a broad occupational group over a decade; it does not say how employers will distribute vacancies by experience level, when hiring will occur, or how easily a newcomer can compete for a particular role.

What should an entry-level candidate look for?
Use the title as a clue, not as the whole job description. Since posting datasets classify titles, a search limited to “junior developer” can miss relevant openings that use different wording. Assess each role by its stated experience requirements and responsibilities rather than assuming that “software developer” means senior or that an unlabelled role is entry-level.
- Search for early-career language as well as junior titles, then check whether the listed experience requirement matches your background.
- Read the responsibilities for signs of the expected level of independence, scope and ownership; a title alone cannot establish those expectations.
- Distinguish a market-wide decline in openings from evidence that a specific role category has disappeared. Posting trends describe advertised opportunities, not your odds of receiving an offer.
- Treat projections of occupational growth as long-term context, not a promise of easy entry or a forecast of how many openings will be suitable for new graduates.
The data describes a squeezed first rung: fewer postings explicitly call themselves junior, experience demands have tightened across tech, and early-career employment patterns in highly AI-exposed areas warrant attention. It does not establish that junior developer work has disappeared or that AI alone caused the difficulty of getting hired.
