Google has been consolidating weather into other Google surfaces (especially the Google app and Google Search) so you still get forecasts and conditions without maintaining a standalone app.
The practical impact is simple: you may lose the dedicated app experience, its widgets, and any app-specific settings. The good news is you can rebuild the same workflow—quick checks, home-screen info, and alerts—using Google’s built-in features or a replacement weather app.

What it means when Google Weather on Android is going away
When Google says an app is going away, it usually means one (or more) of the following: the app stops receiving updates, its functionality is removed or restricted, or you can no longer rely on it as your primary weather entry point.
For most users, forecasts still exist—but they’ll show up in a different place. That’s why the best response isn’t panic; it’s re-routing your daily weather checks to the new location and making sure notifications still work.

Where Google weather features are moving
Google weather typically lives inside the Google ecosystem instead of a dedicated app. In practice, you should expect weather to appear in:
- Google app (conditions, hourly outlook, and location-based cards)
- Google Search (typed searches like weather, plus weather results in the SERP)
- Home-screen widgets that may be replaced by Google’s consolidated widget offerings
The exact UI depends on your Android version and device manufacturer, but the pattern is consistent: weather becomes a feature you pull into surfaces you already use.
What you should do before the app disappears
Do these now so your transition is painless later.
- Check your preferred location(s). Open Google Weather and confirm the city/location(s) you care about.
- Record your widget setup. Note which city the widget shows and whether it’s the current-conditions widget or a forecast-style widget.
- Verify notification behavior. If you use weather alerts, check how they’re configured (inside Google Weather, or through Android notification permissions).
- Update your Google app and Google Search. Go to Google Play Store → search for Google and update the app. Weather features are often delivered via these packages.
If the standalone app stops updating before it’s fully retired, these steps help you map settings to the replacements.
Option 1: Use weather inside the Google app
The Google app is the most common place to keep a weather “home base.” Once enabled, it can surface weather cards automatically or when you open the app.
- Open the Google app.
- Tap your profile icon (top-right) → Settings.
- Look for General or Notifications and confirm weather-related toggles are enabled.
- Find a weather card by searching inside the Google app for weather or your city name, then tap the result to pin/keep the experience consistent.
If your location is off or inaccurate, go to Android Location settings and make sure the Google app has location permission.

Option 2: Use Google Search for forecasts and hourly details
Google Search weather results are fast and dependable. You can get current conditions and forecasts in a few taps without relying on a standalone app.
- Open Google (app) or your browser and go to Google Search.
- Type weather followed by your city (example:
weather Seattle). - Tap the weather result to view hourly, daily, and additional details like precipitation chances.
- Save your location usage by repeating the same query pattern (or use your default location if location services are enabled).
For many people, this becomes their “minimum viable weather app.” It’s especially useful if you want a quick glance and don’t care about complex features.
Option 3: Recreate your home-screen weather widget
Widgets are usually what hurt most when an app goes away. If your current widget is tied to Google Weather, you’ll likely need a replacement widget from the Google app or another provider.
- Long-press an empty area on your Home screen.
- Tap Widgets.
- Search for Google or Weather.
- Select the widget that displays current conditions and place it on your home screen.
- If prompted, choose the city/location and confirm.
Android widget names vary by version and manufacturer. If you don’t see a weather widget immediately, update Google apps from the Play Store and try again after a reboot.
Option 4: Turn on notifications and weather alerts the right way
Even when weather appears in Google Search or cards, alerts depend on notification settings. Don’t assume the old behavior will carry over.

- Enable notifications for weather-related categories.
- Go to the Google app → Settings → Notifications (wording varies) and turn on any weather alerts you want.

If alerts feel silent after switching, check battery optimization. Android can throttle background activity for apps it considers “unimportant,” which can delay updates.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Option 5: Switch to a different weather app (if you want more control)
If you rely on advanced features—radar views, severe weather push alerts, multiple forecast sources, or custom widgets—using a dedicated weather app can be easier than rebuilding everything inside Google surfaces.
When choosing a replacement, focus on these practical criteria:
- Notification quality: can you control severe weather alerts per location?
- Widget availability: can you match your current home-screen layout?
- Location handling: does it support both GPS and saved cities?
- Data transparency: does it tell you what model/source it uses?
Once you pick an app from Google Play, set it up as your “alert and widget” layer, and keep Google Search for fast check-ins.

Weather cards aren’t showing in the Google app
- Confirm you’re signed into the Google account in the Google app.
- In Android Settings → Apps → Google → Permissions, ensure Location permission is allowed (at least while using).
- Update the Google app and then force stop → relaunch.
Home-screen widget shows the wrong city
- Long-press the widget and open its widget settings (if supported).
- Re-select your city/location.
- If the widget doesn’t offer configuration, delete it and re-add the widget after confirming location settings in the Google app.
Notifications stopped after uninstalling Google Weather
- Go to Android Settings → Notifications → App notifications.
- Select Google (or your new weather app) and enable the relevant notification categories.
- Check Android Settings → Battery → Battery optimization and make sure the app isn’t restricted.
You still see Google Weather, but it won’t open or shows errors
This usually indicates the app is mid-retirement or partially incompatible with your device/OS. Try updating Google app/search first, then remove the failing widget and replace it with a Google or third-party widget.
- Update Google and Google Search.
- Remove any Google Weather widgets.
- Use the Google Search weather query to confirm forecasts still work.
Multiple locations don’t behave the way you expect
Some Google weather surfaces track a default location, while others respond to the location inside your query. If you manage multiple cities, test the workflow you care about most: widget city vs. search city.
- Set your default location in the Google app.
- For custom cities, use a direct query like
weather (city name)and avoid relying on the widget if it can’t change locations.
Security and account considerations
Weather apps can request location access. That’s normal, but you should still control permissions.
- Use approximate location if a precise GPS feed isn’t required for your usage.
- Review notification and background permissions for the app you use for alerts.
- Be cautious with unofficial APKs. If the official app is retired, third-party versions can be risky.
FAQ
Will my saved locations disappear when Google Weather is going away?
Not necessarily, but don’t assume it. Some locations carry over via Google account settings, while others are stored only in the standalone app. Re-check your preferred city after you switch to the Google app or widgets.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I still get severe weather alerts?
Usually, yes—if alerts are enabled in the destination app (often the Google app or your chosen weather replacement) and Android notification permissions allow it. Verify both app-level toggles and Android notification categories.

What if I liked the exact UI from Google Weather?
That UI may not be replicable 1:1 in the Google app. If the dedicated layout mattered, consider a replacement weather app with similar widgets and notification controls.
Do I need to do anything if the app is still installed?
Yes—at least migrate your widget and confirm alerts. Even if the app still opens today, retirement can pause updates and break widget behavior later.
Bottom Line
When the Google Weather Android app is going away, the core forecast data typically survives—it just moves into the Google app, Google Search, or a different widget experience. Your job is to rebuild your workflow now: confirm location, replace the widget, and re-enable notifications.
If you want the most reliable “set it and forget it” alerts and home-screen layout, keep Google Search for quick checks and use a dedicated weather app for deeper features.
