The often-cited figures—4.5% in the United States, 4.5% in Japan and 5.5% in Canada—are genuine results from a Statista Consumer Insights survey. They are not 2026 market-share readings: the survey ran from April 2023 through March 2024 and asked adults aged 18–64 whether a Google phone was their primary smartphone. Newer sources measure different things, including web activity and shipments, so none provides a direct like-for-like update.
Where the 4.5% and 5.5% figures came from
The numbers were published by Statista and republished in May 2024 by PiunikaWeb and Voronoi. Statista Consumer Insights asked smartphone users to identify their primary device. The fieldwork covered April 2023 through March 2024, respondents were 18–64, and country samples ranged from 1,880 to 9,425 people.
| Country | Respondents identifying a Google phone as their primary smartphone |
|---|---|
| Canada | 5.5% |
| United States | 4.5% |
| Japan | 4.5% |
| United Kingdom | 3.9% |
| Germany | 3.4% |
| India | 3.1% |
| France | 2.0% |
| Spain | 1.7% |
The underlying chart is Statista’s popularity of Google smartphones chart. Because the chart and secondary reports use both “Google phone” and “Google Pixel,” the safest description is Google-branded smartphone ownership as defined by the survey, rather than a model-by-model Pixel census.
Why this is not one universal “market-share” number
Market share depends on the denominator and the period being measured. These figures answer different questions:

| Metric | What it measures | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Primary-device ownership | Survey respondents saying a Google phone is their main smartphone | The exact installed base, shipments or web activity of every user |
| Shipment share | Google’s portion of newly shipped phones during a defined period | How many active owners currently use each brand |
| Web-usage share | Google-branded devices among measured web activity | Units sold or a precise owner count |
| Premium-segment share | Google’s position above a specified price threshold | Total smartphone-market share |
A respondent can use a Pixel as a primary phone while owning an iPhone or another handset. Web activity also varies with browsing frequency, Wi‑Fi use, multiple devices and measurement coverage. Shipment share can rise before installed ownership changes because it counts new devices entering the market.
What newer data says
United States: about 3% in two different 2026 measures
StatCounter’s July 2026 mobile-vendor table attributed 3.01% of measured U.S. mobile web activity to Google. Apple accounted for 59.58%, Samsung 21.89%, Xiaomi 4.67%, Motorola 4.04% and unknown vendors 3.98%.

Separately, Omdia data reported by 9to5Google estimated approximately 800,000 Pixel shipments in the U.S. during Q1 2026, down 7% year over year, with Google at about 3% of shipments. The same report placed Apple near 60%, Samsung near 24% and Motorola near 11%.
The similar 3% results should not be treated as confirmation that the datasets measure the same population. StatCounter measures web activity; Omdia measures shipments.

Canada: 7.33% of measured mobile-and-device activity
StatCounter’s July 2026 Canada mobile-and-device table listed Google at 7.33%, behind Apple and Samsung. This is not proof that Pixel ownership increased from 5.5% to 7.33%. The older number is a survey result; the newer one is a web-usage measure with a different date range, population and denominator.
Japan: a higher shipment estimate than the older ownership survey
The original survey put Japan at 4.5%. A 2025 GSMA report, drawing on 2023–2024 quarterly shipment analyses from Canalys, Counterpoint Research and IDC, listed Google at approximately 10% of Japan’s market and approximately 4% in the United States.
The approximately 10% figure is a shipment estimate, not the share of all active Japanese smartphone owners. A brand experiencing stronger sales during a period can have shipment share above its installed-base or primary-device share.

Canada is a comparatively favorable market
Canada had the highest primary-device result in the Statista comparison at 5.5%, and Google’s 7.33% StatCounter web-activity figure is also higher than its U.S. result. Together, those measurements support the narrower conclusion that Canada is an important Pixel market. They do not establish a precise year-over-year increase.

Japan may be strategically important
The GSMA shipment estimate suggests stronger recent sales momentum in Japan than the older 4.5% survey result alone would imply. It still cannot be converted into a current ownership percentage. Apple remains the leading manufacturer in Japan, the United States and Canada in the GSMA market overview.
The U.S. remains a concentrated, difficult market
Whether measured by StatCounter web activity or the Omdia shipment estimate, Google is around 3% in the latest cited U.S. data. Pixel is a recognizable number-four brand, but Apple and Samsung dominate the market. The available figures do not show Google challenging either company nationally.
How to read future Pixel-share claims
- Check the fieldwork or quarter before calling a figure current.
- Identify whether the source measures primary ownership, shipments, installed base or web activity.
- Confirm whether “mobile” excludes tablets and whether “mobile and device” uses a broader category.
- Do not infer individual model share, such as Pixel A-series or Pro models, from a Google vendor total.
- Treat explanations such as carrier promotions, camera reputation, AI features, pricing and retail distribution as possible factors, not proven causes, unless a source establishes them.
For ongoing monitoring, compare quarterly shipment releases from Omdia, Counterpoint Research or Canalys with monthly StatCounter series, while keeping each methodology separate.
Verdict
The 4.5% U.S., 4.5% Japan and 5.5% Canada figures are valid historical survey results, not current 2026 market-share figures. The latest evidence points to meaningful regional footholds—especially Canada and potentially Japan—while U.S. data places Google near 3% and confirms that Pixel remains a niche brand behind Apple and Samsung.
