LG announced the Korean rollout on July 29, 2019, then said other markets would follow sequentially. Kernel-source publication was useful evidence that a matching firmware branch existed; it was not an OTA schedule or a guarantee that a carrier had approved the update.
What LG actually announced
On July 29, 2019, LG said Android Pie was being distributed to the V30 and V30S ThinQ in South Korea alongside a software “value-up” package. The announcement described a domestic start followed by sequential releases in other global markets, rather than promising that every country would receive the update during July. LG’s announcement also highlighted new multimedia and convenience functions, including part slow motion, so this was more than a routine security patch.
Android 9 Pie itself had launched in 2018 as API level 28. Google’s Android 9 announcement provides that platform context; LG’s implementation and feature set depended on the V30 firmware build.
Why kernel source mattered—and what it did not prove
Android phone makers must publish source for covered open-source components, including the Linux kernel used in firmware. LG distributes such material through its Open Source portal; the portal’s inquiry page explains that it concerns open-source code used in LG products, not normal customer firmware support.

A Pie kernel archive usually meant LG had produced, or was preparing, a corresponding low-level firmware branch. That made a release more plausible. It did not mean the complete commercial update was downloadable. An OTA also contains the Android framework, LG’s UX, proprietary drivers, modem software, carrier customizations, certification, signing and staged-delivery controls. Kernel source is not a signed KDZ, cannot be installed as an ordinary update, and does not show that carrier testing is complete.
The V30 was a family of models, not one worldwide phone

| Model | Typical market or carrier | What the July evidence established |
|---|---|---|
| H930 | European open-market | Pie began appearing in Europe in late July 2019 according to contemporaneous secondary reporting; timing varied by country. |
| H930DS | International dual-SIM variants | Not a single global schedule; availability depended on the regional build. |
| H933 | Canada | Pie source publication was reported in August 2019 by the V30 community; that was an indicator, not an official date. |
| H931 | AT&T | Pie timing was reported later in 2019; the Korean July announcement did not establish an AT&T date. |
| H932 | T-Mobile | Pie source publication was reported in August 2019; carrier rollout timing remained separate. |
| VS996 | Verizon | Verizon’s Pie rollout was reported on September 15, 2019, not in July. |
| US998 | U.S. open-market and related configurations | Eligibility and timing depended on the installed regional or carrier firmware. |
| LS998U | Sprint | Carrier certification and staged delivery controlled the date; no universal July date was established. |
| V300-series | South Korean variants | Included in LG’s initial Korean rollout announced July 29, 2019. |
Model information is normally shown under Settings → System → About phone, although menu wording can differ by LG software version. Never treat a firmware package for H930 as interchangeable with H932, VS996, H931 or another variant.
What the rollout timeline shows
- June 26, 2019: A contemporaneous community post said LG had moved the V30 Pie schedule from an earlier second-quarter expectation into July after quality-stabilization work. This was a user-community report, not a currently accessible official schedule.
- July 2019: Pie builds appeared for South Korean and European variants. LG’s formal Korean announcement is dated July 29.
- Late July 2019: Beta or release firmware for several international H930-family models was reported, but build status differed by model and region. Contemporaneous reporting should not be read as proof of a universal stable OTA.
- August 2019: Community users reported T-Mobile H932 and Canadian H933 Pie source packages in LG’s repository. See the H932/H933 discussion. Separate discussion about Verizon source and timing is archived at r/lgv30.
- September 15, 2019: Verizon reportedly began distributing Pie to VS996 as Software Update 14. The approximately 2.25 GB package was reported as available through OTA and LG Bridge. Notebookcheck’s report also described a pause and restart pattern that illustrates why source publication was not a firm timetable.
- October 2019: Secondary trackers reported later H931 and H932 milestones, with dates differing by source and possibly reflecting staged distribution. Treat those as carrier-specific reports, not one launch day. Nerdschalk’s tracker and GetDroidTips’ tracker provide that historical context.
Why one model received Pie before another
- Carriers had to test and approve their own builds.
- Radio, modem and band configurations differed between variants.
- Regional firmware included different applications, settings and certifications.
- LG performed quality-stabilization work and could pause a release after bugs appeared.
- OTAs were staged, so two eligible phones could see different availability dates.
That combination explains why a kernel archive could appear before an OTA, and why an announced international rollout did not translate into a July update for U.S. carrier phones.

What Android Pie and the value-up package changed
Depending on the exact build, owners could receive Android Pie platform behavior such as gesture navigation, revised navigation and home-touch controls, and Adaptive Battery. LG’s UX changes and the value-up package added device-specific camera and multimedia functions; LG specifically promoted part slow motion in its July announcement. Security-patch level, camera processing and individual options varied by firmware, so release notes for the exact model remain authoritative.
How owners could check safely
- Confirm the complete model and current software version in Settings → System → About phone (or the equivalent LG information screen).
- Back up photos, messages and authenticator data. Ensure adequate free storage, charge the phone and connect it to Wi-Fi.
- Open the phone’s system software-update screen and check for an OTA. A staged rollout may not appear immediately even when the model is eligible.
- If the carrier supported it, connect the phone to a Windows or macOS computer and check LG Bridge for an official package.
- Install only firmware explicitly matching the model, carrier, region and bootloader configuration. Do not substitute a source archive, leaked KDZ or beta build for signed official firmware.
Risks of manual flashing
Cross-flashing can hard-brick a phone or break radio functions, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, camera behavior or carrier provisioning. Unlocking the bootloader or installing a custom ROM can wipe data and affect DRM or banking applications. A low battery, interrupted USB connection or insufficient storage can also interrupt an update. LG Bridge availability does not prove that an OTA is offered in every country.

How to judge the July prediction
The strongest evidence was LG’s own July 29 announcement, followed by observed OTAs. Firmware-build availability and kernel publication were useful supporting signals, while carrier-specific reports were essential for U.S. models. On that evidence, “likely to roll out in July” was a reasonable forecast for selected Korean and international V30s, but too broad for the V30 family as a whole.
As of 2026, Pie is a historical release rather than a current upgrade path. LG exited the mobile-phone business in 2021; its later software-support announcements provide that retrospective context. LG’s 2021 announcement is not evidence that V30 services or downloads remain available today.
