For current use, start with Meta’s official brand resources and follow their rules: an image being downloadable does not grant unrestricted permission to use it.
What the Facebook logo looks like
Facebook product branding includes a lowercase “f” symbol, the Facebook wordmark, and approved combinations of the two. Depending on the asset and where it appears, the “f” may sit in a blue square or circular field, or appear by itself. Do not assume every version found online is current or approved for your use.
Meta is the parent company’s corporate identity; Facebook remains the product name and has its own branding. In 2019, Facebook announced a separate company identity while saying the Facebook app would retain its branding. Read Meta’s announcement.
Choose the asset that fits the context: an app icon for a compact product reference, a wordmark when the name needs to be legible, and a historical version only when discussing that period. The “f” icon, wordmark, and any combined lockup are not automatically interchangeable.

Where to download a Facebook logo
- Start with Meta or Facebook’s official brand resources. Confirm that the asset is labelled for Facebook, not Meta, and check any accompanying usage guidance. Meta’s terms direct users to brand rules for use of its trademarks and logos.
- Use an official announcement or press resource for archived company assets. Meta’s 2019 announcement includes company-brand context and asset downloads; it is not proof that every asset there is the current Facebook product logo.
- Use Wikimedia Commons for historical comparison when appropriate. Its files include a wordmark labelled approximately August 2005 to July 2015, a 2019 “f” logo, and a 2019 PNG: historical wordmark, 2019 “f” SVG, and 2019 PNG. These are archival references, not a substitute for checking current brand rules.
Search-result images and screenshots can be cropped, compressed, outdated, or altered. Prefer the original asset file over a screenshot, and do not treat a third-party copy as official merely because it looks accurate. If the official download path is unavailable, look for Meta’s current brand or press resources; use an archive only when a historical version is what you need.
Choose the right file format

For a favicon, use an approved icon asset and check how it reads at small sizes. A file format describes how artwork is stored; it does not establish whether the logo is official or whether a particular use is permitted.

How the Facebook logo changed
- Early years: Facebook used a wordmark as the service developed from a single app into a wider family of products. The precise timing and labels of early versions can vary across historical archives.
- Circa 2005–2015: Wikimedia labels a widely circulated wordmark as used approximately from August 2005 through July 2015. See its archival file page.
- 2015-era refresh: The wordmark received a cleaner typographic treatment. Do not infer that every later-looking asset represents a formal global rebrand; some changes may be tied to platforms or asset variants.
- 2019 product and company distinction: Facebook announced separate corporate branding while retaining Facebook app branding. Wikimedia identifies a “f” logo file as introduced in May 2019; see the file page.
Archive dates describe the versions those repositories identify; they are not a complete official revision history. For present-day design work, verify the asset and rules with Meta rather than choosing a logo solely by its date or appearance.
Use the logo without creating confusion
Meta’s terms say that its trademarks, logos, and related marks may be used only as expressly permitted by its brand guidelines or with prior written permission. The precise answer for a particular publication, promotion, app, or campaign depends on its context; this is not a blanket grant for editorial or commercial use.

- Use the minimum mark needed to identify Facebook, and make the destination clear when it is a link or social-presence reference.
- Do not make the logo part of your own company identity or present it alongside claims that imply Facebook’s approval, certification, sponsorship, or partnership.
- Do not stretch, compress, rotate, recolor, add effects to, or otherwise redraw the mark unless current official guidance expressly allows the treatment.
- Do not place it on merchandise or packaging, or use it in an advertisement, as though download availability were permission.
- For a commercial campaign or other sensitive use, consult Meta’s current rules and obtain permission where required.
An archived Facebook Brand Assets Guide, Version 1.3 (April 2019), advises using approved assets and not modifying the design or color. Because it is an archived third-party reproduction, treat it as historical guidance, not a replacement for current rules: archived guide.
Meta’s open-source trademark policy describes a useful general principle for nominative identification: use only what is necessary and do not imply sponsorship or affiliation. That policy specifically covers Meta open-source trademarks; it is not the complete Facebook-logo policy.

Is the Facebook logo copyrighted or trademarked?
Copyright and trademark are different questions. A simple logo may have limited or no copyright protection in some jurisdictions, but the Facebook name, symbol, and other brand identifiers may still be protected by trademark rules. Meta explains trademarks as names, slogans, symbols, or designs that distinguish goods or services on its intellectual-property help page.
Wikimedia file pages may discuss public-domain copyright status while separately warning about trademark restrictions. A public-domain assessment is not a commercial-use clearance and does not resolve whether a use implies endorsement or violates brand rules. The legal result can depend on jurisdiction and context; for a consequential commercial use, seek qualified legal advice.
