If Messenger messages appear when you open the app but alerts are missing, check iPhone notification permissions, Focus, Messenger’s own mute settings, and any Apple Watch routing before resetting your phone. People reported missing Messenger alerts and badges after upgrading to iOS 15, but those reports do not establish one universal, Apple-confirmed iOS 15 bug. Start by identifying whether you’re missing a badge, sound, banner, preview, or every notification.
Identify what is missing
The symptom points to different settings. A missing badge does not necessarily mean message alerts are disabled, and a hidden preview does not mean the notification itself failed.
| What you notice | Check first |
|---|---|
| No red badge, but alerts arrive | Messenger’s Badges setting in iPhone notifications. |
| Banner appears, but there is no sound | Messenger’s Sounds setting, whether the iPhone is silenced, and Apple Watch routing. |
| No banner, but the alert is in Notification Centre | Banner delivery, Focus, or Scheduled Summary. |
| No preview text, but an alert appears | Show Previews in iPhone settings and Messenger settings. |
| Only one conversation is silent | That conversation’s mute setting. |
| Alerts arrive late | Scheduled Summary, Focus schedules, connectivity, and Apple Watch routing. |
| Messages appear only after opening Messenger | Permissions, Focus, network, app state, and whether the issue affects one account or all accounts. |
Test with Messenger closed and the iPhone locked, ideally by asking someone to send a new message. A notification may also have been cleared or changed after the message was read on another device, so its absence alone does not show that the message failed to arrive.

Allow Messenger notifications in iOS
On iOS 15, open Settings > Notifications > Messenger. Apple’s app notification controls determine where notifications can appear, including on the Lock Screen, in Notification Centre, and as banners, as well as whether they make a sound or show a badge.
- Turn on Allow Notifications.
- Enable the delivery locations you want: Lock Screen, Notification Centre, and Banners.
- Turn on Sounds or Badges if those are the missing elements.
- Set Show Previews to Always or When Unlocked, according to your privacy preference.
Apple explains these controls in its iPhone and Apple Watch notification guide. If all options are already enabled, you can try turning Allow Notifications off, restarting the iPhone, and turning it back on. This is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.
Check Focus and Do Not Disturb
iOS 15 introduced Focus, which can filter notifications by app and silence alerts on a schedule. Do Not Disturb is one Focus mode; Work, Personal, Sleep, and other configurations may also affect Messenger. Apple describes the feature in its iOS 15 announcement.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Open Control Centre and tap Focus.
- Turn off any active Focus mode temporarily, then test with a new message.
- If alerts return, go to Settings > Focus and select the mode that was active.
- Tap Apps and allow Messenger, or adjust the mode’s schedule.
- Check each Focus mode rather than only Do Not Disturb.
If Do Not Disturb keeps turning itself on, open Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb and inspect Set a Schedule for active schedules. Also consider whether a location, app, or Lock Screen automation is activating it. Apple’s Do Not Disturb guidance explains its scheduling controls. If Share Across Devices is enabled, Focus may also be active on another linked Apple device.
Check Messenger’s notification and mute settings
Messenger has controls separate from iPhone settings. In the app, tap the Menu/profile picture in the upper-left, then open Settings > Notifications & sounds. Check that Messenger’s Do not disturb setting is off. If the alert arrives but its message text does not appear, check Show previews here as well as in iOS settings. Meta’s Messenger notification instructions cover global and conversation-level controls.

Unmute one conversation
If other chats notify normally, open the Chats list, swipe left on the affected conversation, tap More, then Mute. Choose to unmute it or wait for its mute period to expire. A single muted chat is different from an app-wide notification failure.
If you use multiple Messenger accounts, check the notification settings for the account that is not alerting; Meta also documents a separate control for notifications when logged out. Facebook’s app and Messenger have separate notification settings, so changing Facebook notifications does not necessarily change Messenger’s.

Check Notification Summary and Apple Watch routing
Scheduled Summary can delay alerts
iOS 15 added Scheduled Summary, which batches selected notifications for delivery at chosen times. That can make Messenger seem broken when its notifications are being delayed rather than discarded. Open Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary, turn it off temporarily, and test. If you keep it enabled, remove Messenger from the scheduled-app list. Apple introduced the feature alongside Focus in its iOS 15 feature announcement.
See whether the alert went to your Watch
If you wear an Apple Watch, check it before assuming a notification disappeared. Depending on whether the iPhone is locked or asleep and how notifications are configured, an alert may go to the Watch rather than the iPhone—not both. Open the Watch app on the iPhone and tap My Watch > Notifications to review the relevant settings. Apple covers this behavior in its notification guide.

Test connectivity and update the app
Confirm that the iPhone can reach the internet by opening a website in Safari. Then test Messenger over Wi-Fi and cellular data, if available, and ask someone to send a new message while Messenger is closed. If alerts arrive only when Messenger is open, that suggests an app, account, connectivity, or push-delivery problem; it does not prove which one is responsible.
Update Messenger from the App Store if an update is offered for your device, then restart the iPhone and test again. Meta recommends checking the connection, updating the app, closing and reopening it, and restarting the device in its Messenger troubleshooting guidance. Background App Refresh may be worth testing in a particular case, but it is not the fundamental switch that enables push notifications.

Be precise about versions. The current US App Store listing observed on August 18, 2026 showed Messenger version 574.0.0 and required iOS 15.1 or later. That does not mean this version is available to every iOS 15 device: availability depends on the device and installed OS. In particular, iOS 15.0 does not meet the listing’s stated minimum. Check your iOS version under Settings > General > About and use the App Store listing for your device to see what update is actually available. The listing can change over time: Messenger on the US App Store.
Escalate carefully if alerts still fail
Reopen Messenger and restart the iPhone
- Force-close Messenger: swipe up from the bottom and pause on a Face ID iPhone, or double-click the Home button on an older model; swipe Messenger away.
- Reopen Messenger and send a test message with the app closed afterward.
- If it still fails, restart the iPhone and test again.
These steps can clear a temporary app-state problem, but they do not establish that iOS 15 itself is defective.

Reinstall only after checking account access
Before deleting Messenger, make sure you know how to sign in again and can access the account from another device or Messenger.com. Removing the app can remove locally cached data. If you proceed, reinstall it from the App Store, grant notification permission when prompted, then recheck Notifications & sounds and the affected chat’s mute status.
Report a likely Messenger-side problem
If permissions and Focus are correct, the issue persists across Wi-Fi and cellular, and reinstalling does not help, report it through Messenger’s Help or reporting option rather than repeatedly resetting the iPhone. Include your iPhone model, exact iOS and Messenger versions, whether alerts, badges, previews, or sounds are affected, whether the problem occurs on both networks, and whether another account on the same phone receives alerts. Meta’s troubleshooting page recommends reporting persistent problems after basic checks.
The original iOS 15 reports date from October 2021. For example, an Apple Support Community post described missing Messenger badges after an upgrade. It is an anecdotal user report, not confirmation of a universal Apple or Meta defect. The app and its compatibility requirements have since changed, so an older iOS 15 troubleshooting report does not establish the cause on a particular phone today.
