It is an account-sharing workflow, not a verified way to make ordinary Google Photos backups permanently unlimited. Google’s current policy still counts most new backups against shared Google Account storage, and the exact treatment of saved shared items if sharing ends is not established by the available official guidance.
What the Google Photos trick actually does
Partner Sharing lets one Google Photos account share photos and videos with another account. The recipient can save shared items to their own library. A search-result excerpt for Google’s Partner Sharing help page says saved items do not count against the recipient’s storage while the partner continues sharing them. However, the underlying help page was not accessible for verification, so treat that detail as provisional—not a guaranteed storage loophole.

The practical trade-off is clear: this approach depends on another account and continued sharing. It is different from expanding the quota of one account, and the available evidence does not establish what happens to every saved item if the source account deletes content, stops sharing, or changes its settings. Don’t delete the source library on the assumption that the recipient’s copy will remain unaffected.
How much Google Photos storage you actually get
Google says most Google Accounts have up to 15 GB of storage shared across Google Photos, Gmail, and Drive. A separate note on Google’s current storage page says accounts created from March 9, 2026 start with 5 GB and can unlock another 10 GB through valid phone verification. That new-account rule does not mean existing accounts have all been reduced to 5 GB.

Google’s stated no-charge unlimited-backup exception is limited to photos and videos backed up from a Pixel 5 or earlier. It does not establish unlimited free storage for ordinary uploads from other devices.
Google One is Google’s supported way to add storage. Google’s help page gives a US example of 100 GB for $1.99 per month; pricing and plans can vary by location, so check the current offer for your country.
Which backup-quality settings count against storage?
Current backups in both Original quality and Storage saver count toward your account’s storage. The old idea that Storage saver means unlimited uploads is no longer accurate for new backups. Google says eligible High quality (now called Storage saver) and Express backups made before June 1, 2021 remain exempt.

Google announced on May 24, 2021 that new Photos backups from June 1, 2021 onward would count toward free account storage or purchased Google One storage, while qualifying earlier High quality backups would remain exempt. That announcement explains why older guides describing unlimited High quality uploads may no longer apply.

Choosing between Partner Sharing, Google One, and an independent archive
- Partner Sharing: Consider it if you already want to share a library and are comfortable with the arrangement depending on continued sharing. The storage treatment described in the surfaced help excerpt is not fully verified here.
- Google One: Choose this when you want more capacity attached to your own account through Google’s supported route. Check your regional plan and price before subscribing.
- Storage saver: Use it if reduced resolution is acceptable; it does not make current backups exempt from quota.
- Separate local copy: Keep downloaded originals on an external drive or other independent archive if you need a copy outside Google’s account and sharing arrangements. A local drive does not increase your Photos cloud quota.
Protect your photos before storage runs out
Google says that when an account runs out of storage, it can no longer save new items in Google Photos. Its storage guidance also warns that content may be deleted after two years over quota, and Photos content may be deleted after two years of inactivity. Keep another copy of irreplaceable originals rather than relying on a sharing arrangement or cloud account as the only archive.
To download your data, use Google’s account data export route described in its storage help. Before deleting originals or changing the source account, confirm that your separate copy is complete and opens as expected.
