Recommended Free Tools
Short answer: the 4 GB of RAM and processor figures shown on Steam describe the PC that runs The Forest game client, not the dedicated server. No reviewed source publishes a dependable RAM or CPU minimum for the server process, so you should not size or purchase hardware from the client requirements alone. The dedicated server is a Windows tool, uses TheForestDedicatedServer.exe, supports a documented default of eight players, and requires TCP/UDP ports 8766, 27015 and 27016 to be reachable.

What requirements are actually published?
Steam’s store listing for The Forest (the listing identifies Endnight Games Ltd as developer and publisher) gives specifications for playing the game. It lists 4 GB of RAM as both the minimum and recommended memory figure, an Intel Dual-Core 2.4 GHz processor at minimum, a quad-core processor as recommended, and 5 GB of available storage. Those numbers are useful when checking a player’s gaming PC, but they are not a dedicated-server specification sheet.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Item | Steam client listing | What it tells you about a server |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 4 GB minimum; 4 GB recommended | No server RAM requirement is stated |
| Processor | Intel Dual-Core 2.4 GHz minimum; quad-core recommended | No server CPU requirement is stated |
| Storage | 5 GB available space | This is the client figure, not a complete server storage plan |
| Server software | Not covered by the client listing | SteamDB records a Windows dedicated-server tool with TheForestDedicatedServer.exe |
The important distinction is that a client renders the world, audio and user interface for one player, while a server maintains the shared world, accepts connections and synchronizes game state. Their workloads are different. A figure published for one cannot be treated as a measured requirement for the other.
Why 4 GB RAM and a dual-core CPU are not server recommendations
There is no published server benchmark in the available documentation that ties memory or processor usage to a player count, world state, save size or operating-system version. The Steam listing therefore cannot answer “How much RAM does a Forest server need?” and it cannot establish what CPU is sufficient for eight connected players.

Do not buy a 4 GB machine because the game lists 4 GB, and do not assume a 2.4 GHz dual-core processor will host reliably because it appears in the minimum client row. Those parts might run the client under its stated conditions, yet still leave too little capacity for Windows, the server process, networking and any other applications on the host. Conversely, choosing a large machine solely from speculation would also be unjustified.
If you self-host, treat the client figures as a reminder that the game itself has modest published requirements, then measure the server on the exact machine, operating system, player count and configuration you intend to use. Start with monitoring enabled, leave room for the operating system and background services, and increase resources only when measurements show sustained memory pressure, processor saturation or disk contention. No authoritative number in the cited material tells you where those limits are.
Can you run a dedicated server for The Forest?
Yes. A Steam Community guide explains how to install and configure the dedicated-server tool. Its wording says, “This guide explains how to host the newly added Dedicated Servers!” The page labels the instructions “Game version: v1.07” and shows an update date of January 23, 2019. That makes it useful for understanding the available workflow, but it is community documentation from 2019 rather than current official server-sizing guidance.
The tool is distributed for Windows. SteamDB, a third-party database, lists the executable as TheForestDedicatedServer.exe. SteamDB does not provide RAM or CPU requirements, so its entry confirms the software and platform, not a hardware baseline.

Install the server software
The community guide documents two installation routes. Use the first if you prefer Steam’s graphical library; use the second for a headless or scripted setup.
- Steam client: open Library, change the library filter to Tools, find The Forest Dedicated Server, and install it. The tool will appear separately from the playable game.
- SteamCMD: install SteamCMD, sign in as required by SteamCMD, and download the dedicated-server tool into a directory you control. Keep the install directory backed up so you can restore configuration and saves after a failure.
- Launch once: start
TheForestDedicatedServer.exeon the Windows host. The guide says theServer.cfgfile is generated on the first launch; stop the process cleanly before editing that file.
Because the documented guide targets v1.07, menu names, parameters or behavior may differ in a later build. Confirm that the executable starts and that your installed build accepts each setting before opening the server to other players.
Configure players, ports and server identity
Choose a configuration method
The guide describes command-line parameters and a Server.cfg file. You can pass settings when launching the executable or place them in the configuration file. When the same option appears in both places, the guide states that the command-line parameter overrides the corresponding value in Server.cfg. This precedence matters when an old shortcut silently replaces a value you edited in the file.
Use the documented defaults as starting points
| Port | Transport | Documented purpose |
|---|---|---|
| 8766 | TCP and UDP | Steam communication |
| 27015 | TCP and UDP | Game communication |
| 27016 | TCP and UDP | Server queries |
The guide gives a default maximum of eight players. That is a configuration value, not a performance guarantee: the available sources do not measure what hardware is needed to sustain eight players, nor do they establish a higher supported limit. Keep the documented value unless your installed version explicitly provides a different, tested option.

Consider a server account token
The guide documents a Steam server account token as an optional way to help players locate the server. Treat it as a discoverability and identity setting, not as a substitute for firewall rules or port forwarding. A token cannot make a private address reachable from the public internet.
Open the network paths correctly
For players outside your home network to connect, the Windows firewall and the router must both permit the server traffic. Forward TCP and UDP for ports 8766, 27015 and 27016 from the router to the computer running the server, then create matching inbound rules in Windows Defender Firewall or your chosen firewall. Forward to a stable local address; if the computer receives a different address after a reboot, the rule can point at the wrong device.
- Give the server PC a reserved DHCP lease or another stable private address on your router.
- Create three port-forward entries for that address, selecting both TCP and UDP where the router offers a combined choice.
- Allow the same ports through the Windows firewall for the dedicated-server executable.
- Start the server and have a player on a different network test the connection. A test from inside the same LAN can succeed even when internet forwarding is broken.
- If it remains unreachable, check for carrier-grade NAT, double NAT or an ISP policy that blocks inbound connections. In those cases, a public address or a host that already provides internet reachability may be necessary.
Do not expose unrelated administrative ports. Only publish the game’s documented ports, and restrict remote-management tools to trusted addresses or a private network.
How to size a self-hosted machine when no server baseline exists
The honest answer is measurement, not a guessed RAM kit or processor model. Before inviting players, run the server on the intended Windows machine and observe it during the busiest scenario you expect. Record total system memory use, the server process’s memory, per-core CPU utilization, disk activity and network traffic. Repeat after adding players and after loading the saves and settings you will actually use.

- Easy to Learn, Challenging to Master: Familiar trick-taking foundation makes it instantly approachable for newcomers while unique powers and strategic decision-making keep every game fresh and engaging
- Memory: watch for paging or a steadily growing working set. Paging indicates that Windows is using storage because physical memory is under pressure.
- CPU: check per-core usage rather than only the overall percentage. A single saturated core can cause simulation delays even when the total CPU graph looks moderate.
- Storage: keep free space for the operating system, server files, saves and logs. The 5 GB Steam client figure is not a complete allowance for a long-running server.
- Network: verify that your upload capacity remains stable while players connect. Latency and packet loss are often more damaging than raw download speed.
- Isolation: avoid running heavy downloads, video encoding or other latency-sensitive services on the same machine during play.
These checks tell you whether your particular host is adequate; they do not create an official minimum. If you change the player cap, operating system, world or server build, measure again.
Self-hosting versus a paid game-server host
A rented host can be convenient when you want an always-on world without maintaining a Windows PC or configuring a home router. The trade-off is recurring cost and dependence on the provider’s control panel, location and support. Because no provider, price or performance test was established here, compare offers using the following questions rather than assuming every listing is equivalent.
| Decision factor | Self-hosting | Paid host |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | You install the tool, configure Windows and forward ports. | The provider may preconfigure the service; verify exactly what is included. |
| Availability | Unavailable when your PC, power or internet connection is down. | Usually designed to remain online, subject to the provider’s outages and maintenance. |
| Player limit | You control the documented cap and must validate performance yourself. | Check the advertised cap and whether it is enforced by software or plan. |
| Configuration and saves | Direct access to Server.cfg, launch parameters and files. |
Confirm file access, save downloads and backup/restore controls before paying. |
| Latency | Depends on your ISP and the distance to your home. | Select a geographic location close to the players; location does not guarantee a route or ping. |
| Backups | You must schedule and test your own copies. | Ask how often backups run, how long they are retained and whether restores cost extra. |
| Total price | Existing hardware and electricity may reduce new spending, but upgrades and bandwidth have value. | Compare the current recurring fee, setup charges, taxes and cancellation terms. |
Choose self-hosting when you are comfortable administering Windows and your network, and when the server can be offline occasionally. Choose a paid host when continuous availability, remote management and geographic placement matter more than minimizing recurring cost. In either case, verify current support for The Forest and the exact game build before committing.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server starts but nobody can join
- Confirm the process is still running and that it generated or is reading the intended
Server.cfg. - Check Windows firewall rules and router forwards for all three ports, with both TCP and UDP enabled.
- Verify that forwarding targets the server’s current private address.
- Test from an external network and investigate double NAT or carrier-grade NAT if LAN connections work but internet connections fail.
The server uses the wrong settings
Inspect the launch shortcut, service wrapper or script for command-line parameters. The guide’s precedence rule means a command-line value wins over the same setting in Server.cfg. Remove stale parameters, then restart the process after editing the file.

Players experience lag or disconnects
Measure CPU per core, memory pressure, disk activity and upload stability while the problem occurs. Reduce competing workloads, verify that the host is not paging, and compare results at a lower player count. Do not infer a fix from the 4 GB client figure; it does not diagnose server load.

Remember that the community instructions are labeled v1.07 and dated 2019. Check the files and launch output shipped with your current installation, and treat any setting that is absent or rejected as version-dependent rather than forcing an old command.
A practical decision checklist
- Need only to play locally with a few friends and can leave a Windows PC on? Install the tool, test the documented ports and monitor the machine before expanding the player count.
- Need an always-on world while your PC is off? Evaluate a paid host for current The Forest support, location, backups, configuration access and full recurring price.
- Shopping for hardware? Do not use Steam’s 4 GB, dual-core or quad-core client figures as server sizing advice. Measure the workload on your chosen build instead.
- Unable to forward ports because of your ISP or router? A reachable hosted service may be simpler than changing network infrastructure.
The evidence supports the installation workflow, Windows platform, executable name, eight-player default and three network ports. It does not support a universal server RAM or CPU number. That distinction is the key to avoiding an underpowered purchase and to choosing between a machine you control and a service that handles the networking for you.
