Most WordPress login failures on Nginx are caused by a mismatch between the browser, the site’s public URL, a reverse proxy, PHP-FPM routing, or a cache that serves the wrong response. Fix them from the outside in: confirm cookies, make the hostname and HTTP/HTTPS scheme consistent, verify proxy headers, check Nginx’s WordPress and PHP locations, bypass caches for authentication requests, then isolate plugins and inspect logs. This order starts with reversible changes and avoids changing canonical settings before you have evidence.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
WordPress uses wp-login.php for authentication. A request to /wp-admin/ while logged out normally redirects there. If the browser cannot store WordPress’s test or authentication cookies, WordPress displays “Cookies are blocked or not supported by your browser.” Redirect loops, immediate logouts, 403/404 responses and 500 errors point to different layers, so identify the exact symptom before editing configuration.

Identify the failure before changing the server
Open a private browser window and record exactly what happens after submitting the login form. Note the address in the bar, every redirect, the status code, and whether the form keeps the username but rejects the session. Do not clear logs or make several unrelated edits at once; you need to know which change fixed the problem.
| Observed symptom | Most useful first check | Likely layer |

| “Cookies are blocked or not supported by your browser.” | Enable cookies, remove this site’s cookies, and retry privately. | Browser cookie policy, cookie domain, HTTPS or a response that cannot set the test cookie |
| The form returns to the login page after apparently valid credentials. | Inspect the Set-Cookie response and compare the public URL with WordPress URL settings. |
Cookie scope, canonical URL, proxy scheme, cache or a plugin |
| The browser alternates between HTTP and HTTPS or reports too many redirects. | Map every redirect and find which layer changes the scheme. | Conflicting SSL rules in a proxy, Nginx, WordPress or the database |
403, 404 or 500 on the login URL. |
Check the Nginx access/error log and the PHP-FPM log at the same timestamp. | Location matching, filesystem permissions, PHP-FPM or a security/plugin rule |
| Login works once, then a later request logs out. | Check whether a cache stores authenticated responses or strips the login cookie. | FastCGI/CDN cache, cookie domain or inconsistent hostnames |
Fix WordPress login problems in the safest order
1. Preserve evidence and establish a baseline
Before making a broad change, save the current Nginx server block, the relevant WordPress URL values and a short log window. Record the WordPress, PHP, Nginx and database versions, operating system, and any proxy or CDN in front of Nginx. Capture the public login URL and the redirect chain from a machine outside the server. A header-only request is useful for seeing status codes and cookies without submitting credentials:

Replace the example hostname with the real public host. Keep the output from before and after each change. In browser developer tools, inspect the login request and response headers, especially Location, Set-Cookie, the request host and the scheme. Never paste passwords or session-cookie values into a support ticket.
2. Clear browser state and confirm cookies
WordPress first attempts to write a temporary wordpress_test_cookie, then uses authentication cookies. Delete cookies and cached data for the affected hostname, ensure cookies are allowed for that hostname, close old tabs, and retry in a private window. This distinguishes a stale client cookie from a server-side problem and is low-risk because it changes no site data.
If private browsing succeeds, inspect the normal profile for an extension, privacy setting or cookie rule blocking the site. If both modes fail, look at the response headers: a cookie scoped to a different host, an incompatible secure flag, or a response generated by a cache can prevent the browser from retaining the session. Do not “fix” this by disabling all browser security globally; limit any test to the site and restore the setting afterward.
3. Make the public hostname and scheme consistent
WordPress must use one public hostname and one scheme for generated links, redirects and cookies. Compare the URL in the browser with the WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL constants in wp-config.php, then compare those values with the database’s home and siteurl options. A stale http value left after an SSL migration is a common cause of a loop or an authentication cookie that is never returned.
Choose the exact public form you intend to operate—for example, one hostname with HTTPS—and use it everywhere. Do not set constants to one value while leaving contradictory database values without understanding which value your installation will honor. Back up the database before editing options. If you have command-line access, make the change with your normal WordPress administration procedure; otherwise use a carefully verified database backup and transaction process. Changing these values affects every generated link and redirect, so it is less reversible than clearing cookies or bypassing a cache.

After saving a URL change, test the front page, /wp-login.php and /wp-admin/ from a fresh private window. If the browser still alternates schemes, another layer is issuing the redirect; continue with proxy and Nginx checks instead of repeatedly changing WordPress URLs.
4. Verify reverse-proxy host and HTTPS handling
When a CDN, load balancer or TLS-terminating proxy sits in front of Nginx, the application may see an internal hostname or HTTP even though the visitor used the public HTTPS URL. WordPress’s reverse-proxy guidance explains that the proxy can overwrite the public host; where necessary, configure WordPress to use the trusted SERVER_NAME or HTTP_X_FORWARDED_HOST value supplied by that proxy.
Trace the request through each hop. Confirm that the proxy forwards the public host, preserves the original scheme in its documented forwarded-proto header, and does not rewrite the login path. Nginx must pass the intended host and scheme to PHP-FPM, while WordPress must trust forwarded values only from a proxy you control. Accepting arbitrary client-supplied forwarded headers can let an attacker influence links or redirects, so restrict trust to the known proxy network and follow its header contract.
Look for a split policy such as “redirect HTTP to HTTPS” at both the proxy and Nginx while WordPress believes the request is HTTP, or a proxy that sends HTTPS to Nginx but omits the scheme header. The redirect chain will show which hop changes the URL. Correct that single source of truth before touching cookie settings.
5. Check Nginx routing and PHP-FPM
WordPress’s documented Nginx pattern sends existing files directly and routes other requests to /index.php?$args. The PHP location must pass the selected script to a working PHP-FPM socket or upstream. Nginx’s FastCGI module uses fastcgi_pass to select that backend and SCRIPT_FILENAME to identify the PHP file. If either points at the wrong path, the login form can return 404 or 500 responses even though static pages load.

fastcgi_param CONTENT_TYPE $content_type;
fastcgi_param CONTENT_LENGTH $content_length;
fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php-fpm.sock;
}
}
This is a pattern, not a drop-in file: use your actual WordPress root and the PHP-FPM socket or upstream name configured on the host. The request-method, content-type and content-length parameters matter for POST handling, which is how the login form submits credentials. Confirm that SCRIPT_FILENAME resolves to the real wp-login.php path and that the Nginx worker can read the files.
Validate syntax with your platform’s Nginx configuration test before reloading. If the test fails, restore the previous known-good configuration. A PHP-FPM connection error belongs in the PHP-FPM and Nginx error logs, not in a WordPress URL setting.
6. Bypass caches for authentication traffic
A cached login response can replay another visitor’s redirect or omit a cookie. FastCGI and CDN page caches should bypass all of the following:
- POST requests, including credential submission.
- Requests with query strings when your cache policy could vary the response by those arguments.
/wp-login.phpand the/wp-admin/path.- Requests carrying cookies that identify a logged-in WordPress user.
- Any response that must set or vary authentication cookies.
Apply exclusions at every caching layer. Purge existing cached login and admin responses after changing the rules, then retry in a private window. A useful diagnostic is a temporary cache bypass for your own test request; if authentication immediately works, keep the bypass and refine the cache policy rather than caching the login response. Do not cache pages merely because the anonymous front page is cacheable—authenticated requests have different headers, cookies and redirect behavior.

Plugins can alter cookie names, force HTTPS, redirect login URLs, add security checks or issue their own cache headers. WordPress identifies plugin conflicts as a cause of cookie and login failures. If you cannot reach the dashboard, use an approved maintenance window and filesystem access to temporarily rename wp-content/plugins to another name. This prevents WordPress from loading the plugins while leaving their files intact. Retry the login, then restore the directory name if it was not the cause.

If the login succeeds with plugins disabled, re-enable them one at a time, testing in a private window after each change. The first plugin that restores the failure is the one to inspect for redirect, cookie, SSL or cache settings. A similar test can be performed with the active theme when the evidence points to theme code, but preserve a working recovery path and avoid editing production files without a backup.
8. Read logs and correlate timestamps
Use the browser’s network panel, Nginx access and error logs, PHP-FPM logs and WordPress debugging output together. Correlate the exact timestamp and request path. An access-log line proves that Nginx received the request; an upstream error or timeout indicates PHP-FPM; a 301/302 chain identifies redirect behavior; and a response with no expected Set-Cookie narrows the problem to application, proxy or cache handling.
Keep the environment details when asking for help: WordPress, PHP, Nginx and database versions; operating system; proxy/CDN arrangement; the public hostname and scheme; the status code; and the relevant sanitized headers. WordPress’s support guidance specifically asks for this context. Remove credentials, full session cookies, API keys and private hostnames before sharing logs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors9. Add rate limiting after recovery
Once normal authentication works, protect the login endpoint without blocking legitimate users. Nginx documents a limit_req_zone and a dedicated /wp-login.php location for rate limiting, with a similar rule for /xmlrpc.php. Choose a rate and burst that match the site’s traffic, mobile users and operational policy; there is no universal safe number. Test the rule from a non-administrative account and confirm that ordinary logins still succeed.
limit_req_zone $binary_remote_addr zone=wp_login:10m rate=1r/s;
location = /wp-login.php {
limit_req zone=wp_login burst=5 nodelay;
try_files $uri =404;
include fastcgi_params;
fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name;
fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php-fpm.sock;
}
The rate shown is an example of directive syntax, not a prescription. Ensure the dedicated location retains the same PHP-FPM and cache-bypass behavior as the general PHP location. Apply an equivalent, separately evaluated policy to /xmlrpc.php if that endpoint is enabled. Monitor 429 responses and adjust deliberately rather than disabling protection when a burst of failed attempts occurs.

Use the symptom to choose the next branch
“Cookies are blocked or not supported by your browser”
Start with browser cookie settings and a private-window test. If the error persists, inspect whether the response sets wordpress_test_cookie for the hostname the browser actually requested. A cookie-domain mismatch, mixed HTTP/HTTPS values, a proxy that changes the host, or a cache serving an old response can all prevent the test cookie from being written. Check URL consistency, forwarded host/scheme and cache bypasses in that order. Do not assume the browser is at fault merely because the message mentions cookies.
The form keeps returning to the login page
First decide whether the POST reaches PHP-FPM and whether the response contains a new authentication cookie. If the POST is served from cache, exclude it and purge the stale object. If no cookie is returned, inspect the public host, scheme, cookie scope and proxy headers. If a cookie is returned but the next request is unauthenticated, check that the browser sends it back to the same hostname and that no proxy or security plugin strips it. Logs will show whether Nginx routed both requests to the expected WordPress installation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →There is an HTTP/HTTPS or host redirect loop
Capture every Location header and mark the layer that emits it. Then compare the browser URL, WordPress constants, database options, proxy forwarded scheme and Nginx redirect rules. Remove the contradiction rather than adding another redirect. A proxy that terminates TLS must communicate the original HTTPS state to the application; otherwise WordPress can redirect an already secure visitor back to HTTPS indefinitely.
The login URL returns 403, 404 or 500
A 403 suggests an access rule, security module or rate limit; a 404 commonly indicates that the PHP location or try_files routing does not reach wp-login.php; and a 500 requires the Nginx and PHP-FPM error logs. Verify the document root, file readability, SCRIPT_FILENAME and fastcgi_pass target. Only after the base request works should you re-enable plugin or application-level security rules.
Credentials work, but the next page logs out
This pattern strongly suggests a session cookie that is scoped to another host or scheme, or a cached authenticated response. Compare the host in the login POST with the host in the following /wp-admin/ request, then confirm that logged-in cookies bypass every page cache. If both match, disable plugins temporarily and inspect proxy header rewriting. Changing the password again will not repair a cookie or routing mismatch.
Validate the repair without creating a new outage
- Use a private window and load the public HTTPS login URL.
- Confirm that the login page is served by the intended hostname and that the response is not a cached object.
- Submit credentials and verify that the response sets the expected WordPress authentication cookie without exposing its value.
- Open
/wp-admin/, refresh it, and load a second admin page to prove the session survives more than one request. - Sign out, close the window, and repeat from a normal browser profile after restoring any temporary cookie or plugin changes.
- Test an anonymous front-page request to ensure the cache still works for visitors while login and authenticated requests remain bypassed.
- Review Nginx, PHP-FPM and proxy logs for errors, unexpected redirects, repeated rate-limit responses or upstream timeouts.
- Document the final canonical URL, proxy header policy, Nginx routing, cache exclusions and any plugin change so the next SSL or server migration does not reintroduce the mismatch.
When to stop changing settings and escalate
Escalate to the server or hosting administrator when you cannot access Nginx or PHP-FPM logs, the proxy is managed by another team, or the PHP backend intermittently fails. Provide the sanitized redirect chain, status codes, response headers, timestamps, environment versions and the exact public hostname and scheme. State which reversible tests you completed—private-window login, cache bypass and plugin isolation—and what changed. That evidence lets the administrator work on the failing layer instead of resetting passwords or repeatedly editing WordPress URLs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The durable fix is the one that leaves one public hostname and scheme, trustworthy proxy headers, correct Nginx-to-PHP-FPM routing, no cache for authentication traffic, and a reproducible test showing that the session survives subsequent requests. Apply rate limits only after that baseline is stable, and keep the before-and-after configuration with your operational records.
