Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe Forest saves are stored outside the game’s installation folder. On Windows, open %appdata%..LocalLowSKSTheForest; on Linux or Steam Deck using Flatpak Steam, use the Proton path under compatdata242760. For a reliable backup, close the game, copy the entire save root (or the configured dedicated-server save directory), and restore files to that same corresponding path. Multiplayer data is split between the host’s world and each player’s character, so copying only one file can produce an incomplete save.

Where The Forest save files are stored
The Forest writes saves to a per-user application-data directory rather than the folder containing the game executable. The correct location depends on whether you run the Windows build, Linux/SteamOS through Proton, or a dedicated server.

In File Explorer, click the address bar, enter:
%appdata%..LocalLowSKSTheForest
and press Enter. Windows normally resolves that shortcut to:
C:Users<YourUsername>AppDataLocalLowSKSTheForest
<YourUsername> is the Windows account name that runs Steam and The Forest. The folder can contain SteamID-named directories as well as the game’s single-player and multiplayer save structures. Do not confuse AppDataLocalLow with AppDataRoaming; the documented The Forest root is under LocalLow.

Linux and Steam Deck through Proton
For the Flatpak Steam layout documented for Proton, the path is:
/home/<YourUsername>/.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/242760/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/LocalLow/SKS/TheForest/
The number 242760 is The Forest’s Steam application ID. Proton creates a Windows-like drive_c inside that prefix, which is why the save appears under AppDataLocalLow even though the game is running on Linux. A non-Flatpak Steam installation may use a different library or compatibility-prefix location; search that installation’s steamapps/compatdata/242760 directory and then follow the same pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/LocalLow/SKS/TheForest structure.
What the folders represent
The save root is not one universal file. The Forest separates information by game mode and, for online play, by the player’s role.

| Use case | Where to look | What must travel together |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player | Within the TheForest save root and its slot structure |
The complete save root is safest; do not isolate a file unless you know its purpose. |
| Multiplayer host | Multiplayer/server-related directories under the save root | The world data that defines the shared map, buildings, inventory containers and progression. |
| Multiplayer client | The player’s SteamID directory, including MultiPlayercs for client-character data |
The character data for every player who needs to retain inventory, stats and position. |
| Dedicated server | The server’s SKS directory, normally ending in TheForestDedicatedServerdsmultiplayerslot1 unless configured otherwise |
The active server slot and any directory selected by saveFolderPath. |
In a hosted co-op game, the host’s world and a joining player’s character are distinct. A world backup without the client-character data can preserve the map while leaving a player without the expected inventory or progression. Conversely, a client folder cannot recreate a missing host world. Back up the whole TheForest root when moving or archiving a co-op game so these roles remain together.
How to back up The Forest saves safely
A backup is only useful if it is made while no process is writing to the save and if it includes every related directory. Use this procedure for single-player and peer-hosted multiplayer.
- Exit The Forest. Leave the world, quit to the desktop and close the game. If Steam is still synchronizing, wait for that activity to finish.
- Stop any dedicated server. A running server can autosave while you copy files. Stop its process or service before making a server backup.
- Open the documented save root. Use the Windows address-bar path or the Proton path for your platform.
- Copy the entire
TheForestfolder. Paste it to another local disk, an external drive or a removable USB flash drive for game saves. Copying only a visible slot or one SteamID directory is less reliable because multiplayer uses separate host and client areas. - Label the copy. Include the date and context, such as “The Forest co-op host before map change” or the dedicated-server slot name. Keep the original folder unchanged.
- Verify the copy. Open the destination and confirm that the expected SteamID directories, multiplayer folders or server slot are present. A copy that contains only an empty parent folder is not a usable backup.
For important worlds, maintain more than one destination: for example, a second local disk plus offline removable storage. An independently managed cloud-backup service can be a second copy, but it is separate from Steam Cloud and should be checked for availability and retention before you rely on it.
How to restore a save
- Close The Forest and stop the dedicated server, if applicable.
- Move the current save root to a temporary name instead of deleting it. This gives you a rollback if the restored copy is the wrong slot.
- Copy the backed-up files into the corresponding original location:
C:Users<YourUsername>AppDataLocalLowSKSTheForeston Windows, the matching Proton prefix on Linux/Steam Deck, or the server’s configured save directory. - Preserve the folder hierarchy. Do not place the backup folder one level too deep, such as
TheForestTheForest...; the game must see the same relative paths it used when the backup was created. - Start the game or server and check the intended single-player or multiplayer slot. Confirm the world and a test player’s inventory before removing the temporary copy.
Steam’s general backup guidance likewise requires files to be copied back to their corresponding game-save folders. Restoration is a file replacement operation, not an import button inside The Forest.

Moving a multiplayer save to another computer
To move a peer-hosted world, first make a complete backup on the original computer. Install and launch The Forest once on the destination so it creates the expected save directories, then exit it. Copy the backed-up TheForest root into the destination user’s matching LocalLowSKS path. On Linux or Steam Deck, place it in the Proton prefix for app ID 242760.
The Windows account name, Linux home name and Steam installation path can differ between computers; replace those portions of the path but do not rename internal SteamID directories. The person who hosts the world should restore the host data. Each co-op participant who needs their character progression should also restore the corresponding client-character data from the backup. Have everyone close the game during the transfer, and test by loading the slot before overwriting any remaining original copy.

The final directory may not be slot1 if the server uses another slot. The server configuration can also define saveFolderPath, which changes where saves are written. Treat that configured path as authoritative rather than assuming the default location.

To migrate a server, stop it, copy the complete configured save directory (including the active slot), install or prepare the destination server, set the same save-folder configuration, and then copy the files into that directory. Start the server only after the transfer is complete. If the administrator changes the save path later, update the backup routine as well; backing up the old default directory will not capture a server writing elsewhere.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Steam Cloud protect The Forest saves?
Steam Cloud can synchronize supported save data between computers, but it is not a complete archival or recovery system. Steam Support states: “Steam Support cannot recover lost saves or assist in resolving cloud conflicts.” A cloud copy may therefore be unavailable, outdated or in conflict with the local folder.
Before choosing a cloud-conflict option, preserve the local TheForest folder manually. If a conflict appears, copy that folder to a separate location, note which computer has the newest world, and then resolve the prompt deliberately. Steam Cloud should supplement dated local or offline backups, not replace them.

Platform, role and backup-destination checklist
| Question | Action |
|---|---|
| Which platform? | Windows uses %appdata%..LocalLowSKSTheForest; Flatpak Proton uses the compatdata/242760 path. |
| Who owns the save? | Identify the host/world data and each client’s SteamID character data before moving a co-op game. |
| Is it a dedicated server? | Check saveFolderPath and the active slot; do not assume the client’s TheForest folder is used. |
| Where is the backup? | Use another local disk, removable USB storage or independently managed cloud storage, and keep the original untouched until verification. |
Troubleshooting missing or apparently empty saves
The folder does not exist
Launch The Forest, create or load a test save, exit normally and check the path again. On Windows, paste the environment-variable path into File Explorer rather than browsing manually through hidden folders. On Proton, confirm that you are checking the Steam installation and compatibility prefix actually used by the game; multiple Steam libraries can create multiple plausible paths.
Recommended Free Tools
The game starts with no old world
Check that the restored files are one directory level too deep, that you copied the correct Windows user or Proton prefix, and that the backup contains the expected slot and SteamID directories. Keep the original folder so you can retry without losing the current state.
A co-op player lost inventory or progression
The host world and client-character data are separate. Restore the player’s SteamID directory and its MultiPlayercs data from the same dated backup as the host world. Mixing files from different moments can produce a world and character that do not match.
The dedicated server loads a new map
Inspect the server configuration for saveFolderPath and the selected slot. If the path was changed, restore the backup there rather than under the client’s save root or the default directory. Stop the server before replacing files.
Steam Cloud offers a conflict
Do not select an option until you have copied the local save folder. Compare the dates and contents of the local and cloud-backed versions as far as Steam exposes them, then choose the version that contains the intended world. Keep the manual copy even after synchronization succeeds.

Quick Recap
Best practice for long-term save protection
- Back up before major building projects, game updates, server configuration changes or moving to another computer.
- Keep at least one copy that is not mounted or synchronized continuously, so accidental deletion or a bad cloud version cannot replace every copy.
- Use dated folders rather than repeatedly overwriting a single backup.
- Back up the complete root for co-op, including host and SteamID-specific client data.
- For servers, document the configured
saveFolderPath, slot and autosave settings alongside each backup. - After restoring, load the world and verify both the map and a player character before deleting older copies.
