Google’s announced shelf dates were October 4, 2026, in the U.S. and October 5 in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany and Australia. What is a Googlebook?
Google introduced Googlebook as a new laptop category in May 2026. The company positions it as combining Android’s app ecosystem with ChromeOS foundations, Gemini features and integration with Android phones. That is Google’s description of the category, not an independent comparison proving it is better than a Chromebook or another laptop.

The initial wave was announced with Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo. Google says 512 GB of built-in storage is standard across manufacturers, though other configurations vary. For example, Google’s store lists an XPS Googlebook configuration with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage; those specifications should not be assumed for every model.
What is included in the launch deal?
Google’s launch announcement says every Googlebook includes 12 months of Google AI Pro, with 5 TB of cloud storage and higher usage limits in Gemini. It also advertises three months of YouTube Premium, Adobe Photoshop and other app offers. Google’s U.S. Store describes the AI Pro portion as a “$239 value” and the app collection as worth “up to $290.” Those are Google’s promotional valuations, not guaranteed savings for every buyer; app availability and eligibility can vary.

Read the offer terms for the country where you buy before counting the subscriptions as part of the laptop’s value. For example, Google’s UK terms say eligible users must purchase and activate an eligible Googlebook on or after October 1, 2026, and redeem by March 31, 2027, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time. The terms list Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, the U.K. and the U.S. for that offer. After the 12-month trial, the subscription renews at the then-applicable price unless canceled; the UK terms list £18.99 per month. That UK renewal price does not establish the price in other countries.
How much do Googlebooks cost, and when are they available?
Google says Googlebooks start at $899. Individual model prices and configurations differ, so check the listing for the exact device rather than treating the starting price or one model’s specifications as universal.

Can a Googlebook use apps and files from an Android phone?
Google says its phone-continuity features require an Android phone running Android 17 or later. Listed functions include opening phone apps from the laptop, accessing phone files and continuing tasks across devices. If your phone runs an older Android version, do not assume these particular integration features will work.

What are Google’s Gemini-oriented features?
Google describes Magic Pointer as a cursor-activated Gemini feature that can suggest actions based on what is on screen, such as scheduling an event or combining images. Rambler is described as capturing voice notes, removing filler words and organizing spoken notes. Create My Widget is described as generating custom widgets from a text description. These are Google’s feature descriptions; the announced materials do not provide independent performance testing.

Not for centrally managed deployments at launch. Google’s administrator guidance says Googlebooks are initially designed for personal consumer use and do not yet support domain enrollment or centralized fleet management. Google plans to begin rolling out the first wave of core management capabilities in the second half of 2027.

Google says existing Chromebooks will continue to receive updates through their supported lifetimes. It also says many newer commercial Chromebook models will be eligible to transition to Googlebook OS, but specific transition paths and eligibility details are to come later. Organizations that depend on centralized management should not treat a Googlebook as a ready replacement for a managed Chromebook fleet today.
Quick Recap
What to check before buying
- Compare the exact configuration: verify RAM, storage and price for the model you intend to buy; the $899 starting price is not a price for every configuration.
- Check phone compatibility: Android 17 or later is required for the listed continuity features.
- Review the local offer terms: confirm eligibility, redemption deadline, included apps and post-trial renewal terms for your country.
- Consider your workflows: Google’s positioning emphasizes Android apps and phone integration, but the launch information does not establish how every Android app or specialized laptop workflow will perform.
- For organizations, verify management needs: domain enrollment and centralized fleet management are not available at launch.
