The project was publicly fired by Cody Wilson on 6 May 2013, after an April 27 report said the design was about two weeks from printing, testing and online release. It was not literally metal-free: a nail served as the firing pin, and a steel slug was included for compliance with the U.S. Undetectable Firearms Act.
What the “available to download in two weeks” headline referred to
The headline described a planned release, not an already available product. A 27 April 2013 report said the team expected to print and test an all-plastic handgun and publish its design online in roughly two weeks. That project became the Liberator, a name drawn from the World War II–era FP-45 Liberator pistol.

The schedule moved quickly. The Victoria and Albert Museum records that Wilson fired the gun on 6 May 2013 at a private shooting range in Austin, Texas, in the presence of BBC3. Ars Technica reported that Defense Distributed intended to publish the computer-aided design files after reliability and durability testing.
Was the first 3D-printed gun really all plastic?
Only in the shorthand sense used by the headline. The Liberator was predominantly plastic, but it contained two important metal elements.

- 【More Colors for More Projects】 Multiple compact 250g mini spools provide practical amounts of different colors for small prints, multicolor models, accent parts, and test prints. Explore more colors without filling your shelf with full 1kg spools or leaving large amounts of rarely used colors behind
- 【Easy to Print PLA】 Built for smooth printing with standard PLA profiles, low warping, and dependable layer adhesion. A practical everyday material for beginners and hobbyists making models, toys, decor, prototypes, and utility parts
- 【Neatly Wound for Reliable Feeding】 Precision winding supports smooth, consistent feeding and helps reduce snags and mid-print interruptions. Keep light tension on the filament end while loading or unloading, and secure it before storage to prevent loose loops
- 【Consistent Diameter and Steady Extrusion】 A consistent 1.75mm ±0.02mm diameter supports stable flow, even layers, and clean detail from the first layer to the final layer. Reliable extrusion means less time troubleshooting and more time printing
- 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use
- Printed components: The Victoria and Albert Museum describes fifteen parts, each printed in ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) plastic on a Stratasys Dimension SST industrial printer.
- Firing pin: Ars Technica identified a nail as the firing pin.
- Metal-detection component: A 6-ounce steel slug was included so the firearm would meet the metal-content requirement of the U.S. Undetectable Firearms Act.
“All-plastic” therefore describes the construction’s dominant material and its significance as a printed object. It should not be read as “contains no metal.”
What happened when the files were released?
The Liberator combined a physical proof of concept with online distribution. After the demonstration and testing phase, Defense Distributed published the design files through its website. The Victoria and Albert Museum reports that the drawings received 100,000 downloads in their first two days, a figure describing the 2013 release.

That distribution model mattered as much as the prototype. A conventional firearm is produced and sold through a manufacturer or dealer; the Liberator’s design could be copied and fabricated by people who obtained the digital files and had access to suitable equipment. The episode helped turn downloadable firearm CAD files into a major policy and safety controversy.
How the Liberator compares with the headline’s implications
| Question | What the 2013 Liberator record establishes | What the headline can incorrectly suggest |
|---|---|---|
| Was it entirely plastic? | Fifteen ABS plastic parts, plus a nail firing pin and a 6-ounce steel slug. | That every component, including the firing mechanism, was plastic. |
| How did it operate? | A single-shot handgun demonstrated by Wilson on 6 May 2013. | A repeat-fire or semi-automatic printed firearm. |
| What equipment was involved? | The documented prototype parts were printed individually on a Stratasys Dimension SST industrial printer using ABS. | That any consumer printer and material would produce the same result. |
| How was it distributed? | Design drawings were published online for download; the V&A reports 100,000 downloads in two days. | A conventionally manufactured product sold through ordinary retail channels. |
Why the Liberator became a landmark
The Liberator was significant for two separate reasons. Technically, it demonstrated that a functional handgun could be assembled primarily from additively manufactured polymer parts. Politically, it showed that firearm designs could circulate as digital files rather than only as controlled physical goods.

- Cost-Effective Filament Bundle: Get 2 "1kg" spools of PLA filament for the price of 1 with classic black and white color
- Smooth and Stable Printing: Patented design and manufacturing process ensures smooth, clog-free printing
- Durable and Strong: Improved toughness and strength for printing functional parts
- Compatible with Most Printers: Works with 99% of FDM and FFF 3D printers with heated beds
- Renewable Material: Made from starch derived from renewable plant resources for environmental friendliness
The project also exposed the limits of the phrase “3D-printed gun.” The printer produced the plastic components, but the weapon still depended on non-printed hardware. Its design, testing and public demonstration were inseparable from questions about detectability, durability, accountability and access to digital fabrication.
What the 2013 episode does—and does not—tell us today
The historical record establishes the Liberator’s 2013 demonstration, its mostly ABS construction, and the rapid download response. It does not establish whether particular files are available now, whether a specific jurisdiction permits possession or manufacture, or whether any homemade firearm is safe.
