Intel’s published figures show the Core Ultra 9 285 up to 21% faster than the Core i9-14900 in the SPECworkstation 4.0 Media and Entertainment subscore. In a separate test, the 285 scored up to 2.97 times higher in 3DMark Steel Nomad Light Unlimited—an increase of more than 200% in that specific graphics benchmark.

These are Intel “up to” results, not a single overall Arrow Lake-versus-Raptor Lake rating. The processors, workloads and test configurations must be kept separate when interpreting them.

What Intel actually compared

The headline comparison is between Intel’s Core Ultra 9 285 and the Core i9-14900, which Intel identifies as a Raptor Lake-S Refresh desktop processor. The cited 21% result does not test the Core Ultra 9 285K. Intel lists the 285K as a separate launched Arrow Lake desktop SKU, but its specifications cannot be substituted for the non-K 285 result.

How to read the 21% media-and-entertainment result

Intel bases the “up to 21% faster” statement on the Media and Entertainment subscore in SPECworkstation 4.0. That subscore represents a particular collection of professional workstation tasks; it is not a general application-speed average and should not be presented as a 21% gain in every editing, rendering or content-creation program.

Intel lists both systems at a 65 W PL1 power limit, but the platforms were not identical:

  • The Core Ultra 9 285 system used DDR5 CUDIMM, 2 × 32 GB at 6400 MHz.
  • The Core i9-14900 system used DDR5 UDIMM, 2 × 32 GB at 5600 MHz.
  • The listed display resolutions were 1920×1080 for the 285 system and 1920×1200 for the 14900 system.

Because Intel published the estimate with those platform differences, the figure should be attributed to Intel and kept tied to SPECworkstation’s named subscore.

Why the graphics result exceeds 200%

In 3DMark Steel Nomad Light Unlimited, Intel reports scores of 1845 for the Core Ultra 9 285 and 621 for the Core i9-14900. That produces a 2.97× result for the 285, which is commonly described as more than 200% better than the older score.

Steel Nomad Light Unlimited is a graphics benchmark. The result does not mean that every game, 3D package or GPU-accelerated workload will run 2.97 times faster. Intel’s disclosed configurations also differed in ways that can affect performance:

  • Memory was listed at 6400 MT/s for the 285 and 5600 MT/s for the 14900.
  • The systems used different BIOS and microcode versions.
  • Graphics-driver versions were different.

Those details do not invalidate Intel’s result, but they are essential context for comparing it with an independently tested system.

What “Arrow Lake” means in this comparison

Arrow Lake is the product-generation name behind Intel’s Core Ultra desktop Series 2 processors. The evidence here concerns a specific 285-versus-14900 comparison, not every Arrow Lake model against every Raptor Lake Refresh chip. Results for a Core Ultra 9 285K, Core Ultra 7 model or another Core i9 may differ because of core configuration, power limits, memory, firmware and graphics setup.

Should an owner of a Core i9-14900 upgrade?

These benchmark claims alone cannot establish whether an upgrade is worthwhile. A decision should match the processor and test to the work you actually do.

For workstation and creator workloads

Use the SPECworkstation 4.0 Media and Entertainment result as an indication that Intel sees a meaningful advantage for the tested workload set. Check independent tests of your specific application before treating 21% as an expected timeline reduction.

For integrated graphics

The 3DMark result is most relevant when comparing systems that rely on processor graphics. It is less informative for a desktop equipped with a discrete graphics card, where the card, driver and game settings usually dominate performance.

For AI inference

The separate ResNet50 figures—up to 3.39× for CPU performance and up to 2.08× for GPU performance—apply to latency-optimized inference tests. They should not be converted into a blanket claim that Arrow Lake makes all AI software two to three times faster.

For a new Arrow Lake build

Intel lists the Core Ultra 9 285K with 24 cores, 24 threads, up to 5.7 GHz maximum turbo, 125 W processor base power and DDR5 support up to 6400 MT/s. Those are the 285K’s specifications, not the processor tested for the 21% media result. Confirm the exact SKU, motherboard, memory and firmware when comparing prices or complete systems.

What the figures do—and do not—prove

  • They do show: Intel’s measured advantage for named workloads on the listed systems.
  • They do not show: a universal 21% CPU uplift, a universal 2.97× graphics uplift, or guaranteed gains in a particular application.
  • They do not establish: current retail value, power efficiency in every workload, or whether replacing a functioning Core i9-14900 system is financially sensible.

For a meaningful buying comparison, verify the benchmark version and settings, match the exact processor SKU, and account for memory speed and type, power limits, BIOS, microcode, graphics drivers, operating system and the rest of the platform.
