Traditional antivirus is built around one question: is this file or behavior malicious, and can it be stopped? EDR (endpoint detection and response) asks more: what happened on this device, how far did it spread, and what should we do now? The shift is from blocking alone to blocking plus telemetry, alerting, investigation and response. It is not a shift from “signatures” to “behavior,” because modern antivirus already watches behavior. And it usually isn’t a choice between the two, because they often ship in the same platform.
The product details below come mainly from Microsoft’s documentation for Defender for Endpoint. They describe one vendor’s platform, not a universal feature set, and they don’t prove that EDR always produces better outcomes.

What each term means
- Traditional antivirus (shorthand): endpoint protection historically centered on detecting and blocking malicious files, often by signatures. Not every older product was purely signature-based, and current ones are not.
- Modern antivirus: can add behavior-based, cloud-delivered and machine-learning techniques. Microsoft says Defender Antivirus behavior monitoring observes process, file and service activity in real time and can flag suspicious activity that matches no known malware signature (Microsoft Learn: behavior monitoring).
- EDR: capabilities that gather and analyze endpoint signals, detect suspicious activity, raise alerts, support investigation and provide response actions. Microsoft’s documentation says: “Endpoint detection and response capabilities in Defender for Endpoint provide advanced attack detections that are near-real time and actionable.” That is vendor-authored language, not an independent assessment (Overview of endpoint detection and response capabilities).
Why “signatures versus behavior” is the wrong framing
A common story says antivirus matches known signatures while EDR watches behavior. That is outdated. Behavior monitoring exists inside antivirus too. The real difference is what happens around a detection. Antivirus mainly decides whether to block. EDR keeps context so a human or automated process can understand and act on what occurred.

| Stage | Antivirus-centered | EDR adds |
|---|---|---|
| Prevention | Scans files, blocks known and suspicious items, monitors behavior | Not its primary role; can coexist with antivirus in one platform |
| Visibility | Verdict on the item or behavior | Endpoint telemetry kept for later investigation |
| Alerting | Detection or block notice | Alerts with context, which may be grouped into incidents |
| Investigation | Limited | Analyst review of context and scope |
| Response | Quarantine or remove the detected item | Actions such as stopping a process, quarantining a file or isolating a device |
An illustrative sequence
- A suspicious process or behavior generates endpoint signals.
- The security product raises an alert, and related alerts may be grouped into an incident.
- An analyst investigates the context and scope: which device, which process, what else is related.
- Response actions follow, such as stopping a process, quarantining a file or isolating the device.
This describes Microsoft’s platform behavior as documented. Automation and available actions vary by plan and deployment (Microsoft Learn).

What an EDR actually sees
Microsoft lists telemetry categories for Defender for Endpoint that include process information, network activity, kernel and memory-manager visibility, user logins, registry changes and file-system changes. Its overview states this information is stored for six months for investigation. Both the scope and the retention period are specific to Defender for Endpoint, not to EDR products generally (overview). Microsoft also notes its EDR is not intended to record every activity as a full audit or logging solution, so don’t treat it as a complete forensic record.
Does EDR replace antivirus?
In Microsoft’s platform, next-generation protection and EDR work together rather than being alternatives (Defender for Endpoint on Windows). The better question is which layer does which job and whether you have people or services to act on the alerts.

Microsoft-specific prerequisites and caveats
- Defender for Endpoint depends on Defender Antivirus for some capabilities, such as file scanning.
- When a non-Microsoft antimalware product is primary, Defender Antivirus can run in passive mode. In that mode it does not perform real-time, scheduled or on-demand scans (compatibility guide).
- EDR in block mode is a separate Plan 2 capability. It can remediate malicious artifacts or behaviors when Defender Antivirus is passive, but Microsoft cautions that it cannot provide all available protection in that mode (EDR in block mode; FAQ).
How to compare EDR products
The sources support these as capability categories, not a cross-vendor ranking:
- Prevention and behavioral blocking
- Telemetry sources and retention
- Alert context and incident correlation
- Investigation and threat-hunting tools
- Response actions and automation
- Operating-system and workload coverage
- Integrations with identity, network, SIEM or XDR tools
- Deployment, tuning, staffing and licensing requirements
The last item matters most in practice. EDR produces alerts and investigation work, so it only adds value if someone, in-house or through a managed detection service, reviews and acts on them.

- Includes Standard Protection – Comprehensive security package with firewall, intrusion prevention, VPN, web security, and application control to defend against everyday threats and keep business operations safe.
What the evidence does not show
No independent statistic or standards-body statement comparing EDR outcomes with antivirus was identified, so this article makes no claim of measured superiority. The case for EDR rests on the capabilities it adds, not on a proven percentage improvement.
The Bottom Line
Treat EDR as an added layer of visibility and response on top of prevention, not a replacement for it. The decision turns less on the technology than on whether your team can act on what it surfaces.
