It is not a current standard or certification. The phrase comes mainly from NVIDIA’s GeForce 3D Vision era and from monitor product listings of that time.
Where the phrase came from
NVIDIA’s GeForce 3D Vision troubleshooting guide (2008) uses “pure 120 Hz LCD” as a category of monitor for stereoscopic 3D gaming. Shutter-glasses 3D shows a separate image to each eye in turn, so a 120 Hz panel gives each eye an effective 60 Hz. That is why the 120 Hz requirement mattered for the system.

The guide’s setup advice reflects that environment. It recommended configuring a 120 Hz LCD game mode at 1680×1050 and setting the refresh rate to 100 Hz or higher. These are 3D Vision instructions, not recommendations for modern monitors or TVs.

The guide also says: “For optimal stereoscopic 3D image quality, when using a pure 120 Hz LCD, please allow your monitor to warm up.” It describes warm-up as normal LCD behavior. Treat this as advice for that older 3D setup, not a general rule for monitors.

A product example: ViewSonic V3D245
The ViewSonic V3D245 shows how sellers used the term. A listing from the distributor INTCOMEX (publication date not stated) describes it as a “Pure 120 Hz monitor” and gives these specifications:
| Spec | Listed value |
|---|---|
| Size | 24 inches, LED-backlit LCD |
| Native resolution | 1920×1080 (Full HD) |
| Frame rate / refresh | 120 Hz |

Current stock is unconfirmed, so this is an illustration of the wording, not a buying suggestion.

What “pure 120 Hz” does and doesn’t tell you
It describes the display, not the content
Refresh rate is how often the screen can update. Frame rate is how many frames the source delivers. A 120 Hz display fed 30 or 60 fps content does not gain original frames; it repeats them, or creates new ones through interpolation (motion smoothing). Likewise, a 120 Hz TV does not show 120 frames per second unless the source supplies them.
It is not a regulated class
The sources reviewed show historical marketing and 3D Vision usage only. No universal definition or certification exists, and current manufacturers may use 120 Hz wording differently. The related question “is it native 120 Hz?” has no single standardized meaning either. In practice, it is best read as: does the panel accept and display a 120 Hz signal, rather than faking it with processing?

Refresh rate depends on resolution
A gaming-TV guide from TechRadar points out that some sets accept 120 Hz at Full HD but only 60 Hz at 4K. A “120 Hz” label therefore doesn’t guarantee 4K at 120 Hz. The same applies to ports and cables, which can limit which modes work.

- Find the maximum refresh rate at the resolution you will use in the exact model’s specifications or manual.
- Check which input (HDMI version, DisplayPort, etc.) supports that mode, and confirm your console or graphics card can output it.
- Be wary of labels like “motion rate” or “smoothing” that describe processing, not a 120 Hz input.
- If relevant, check variable refresh rate support and game-mode input latency.
- After connecting, confirm the mode in your operating system or console display settings.
When shopping, “120 Hz monitor” is the practical search phrase; verify the details above for each model.
