Play The Elder Scrolls: Arena first if you want to follow the series in release order; start with Daggerfall if its story about a murdered king and the ancient golem Numidium is the stronger hook for you. Bethesda identifies Arena as the series’ first chapter, released in 1994, and Daggerfall as its second, released in 1996. The available official information establishes chronology and story premises—not a winner for difficulty, combat, or overall quality.

What is the story hook for each game?
Arena: a prisoner against Jagar Tharn
In Bethesda’s official synopsis, a lone prisoner must collect the shattered Staff of Chaos and save the Empire from Jagar Tharn. Arena is the natural choice if you want to begin with the first chapter and experience the original entry point to the series.

Daggerfall: a haunted king and Numidium
Daggerfall shifts the premise to the spirit of a murdered king and a struggle over Numidium, an ancient golem. Bethesda’s official page describes the Emperor sending a champion to High Rock to put the king’s spirit to rest and ensure the golem does not fall into the wrong hands. If that setup sounds more compelling, it is reasonable to begin with the sequel instead.

Steam: check the current free listings
Bethesda Support’s article about the Bethesda.net Launcher sunset identifies both Arena and Daggerfall among games made available on Steam and says they may be found there for free. Treat this as a route to check, not a permanent guarantee: confirm the current Steam listing before you plan around it. Bethesda Support’s launcher-sunset information explains the availability.

GOG: a DOSBox version of Daggerfall
GOG lists Daggerfall as a free Windows game powered by DOSBox. Its listing says stability and compatibility with Windows 10 and 11 were validated in a changelog dated November 13, 2024. Those claims apply to GOG’s distribution and should not be assumed to cover every version or installation route. See GOG’s Daggerfall listing for its current details.
Daggerfall Unity: a separate community project
Daggerfall Unity is an open-source recreation made by Daggerfall Workshop using the Unity engine. Its June 1, 2024 announcement describes support for Windows, Linux, and macOS, along with fixes, quality-of-life enhancements, and mod support. It requires the free DOS Daggerfall files for game assets, so it is an additional way to run Daggerfall—not a standalone replacement for obtaining those files and not a Bethesda remaster. Which one should you choose?
- Choose Arena first for release order and the series’ original chapter.
- Choose Daggerfall first if the king’s ghost and Numidium are the premise that makes you want to play.
- Consider Daggerfall Unity if you specifically want the community recreation and can provide the required DOS game assets.
Official story summaries and release dates do not establish which game is easier, has better combat, or is the better overall experience. Those are separate judgments, so choose by chronology, premise, or preferred way to run the game rather than treating one as an objectively superior starting point.
