The Elder Scrolls: Arena supports keyboard movement, but it is not a keyboard-only game: Bethesda says the arrow keys move and turn, while the original manual scan says a mouse is required for the game to operate correctly. Start with the supplied controls, check that the mouse works inside the game window, and only then consider changing DOSBox’s separate key mapping.
What controls should you try first?
Arena is the original DOS game, and the current Steam listing presents it as a free-to-play, single-player title with PC/MS-DOS 5.0 as its minimum operating-system requirement. Steam’s listing gives its release date as April 26, 2022.

Bethesda Support answers the question “Can I use the keyboard to control my movement in Arena?” with: “The arrow keys control forward/backward movement and turning left or right.” That confirms keyboard movement, not that every interaction is equally comfortable or available from the keyboard. An archived scan of the original manual states, “Mouse is required for game to operate correctly.” Read this as evidence that mouse interaction matters, not as a contradiction of Bethesda’s movement guidance: movement and broader interaction are different parts of the control scheme. Quick setup check
- Launch the game with its supplied configuration and press the arrow keys to verify forward/backward movement and left/right turning.
- Move the pointer over the game and check that it is captured by the game or DOSBox window. If it is not, click inside the window and try again.
- Test mouse interaction before starting a long session. If the pointer still does not respond as expected, check the DOSBox window and configuration rather than assuming that keyboard movement covers every action.
Keyboard movement and mouse interaction: what each is for
| Control path | What the sources establish | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Keyboard movement | Bethesda Support says the arrow keys move forward and backward and turn left and right. | Useful for movement; this statement does not establish a complete keyboard-only control scheme. |
| Mouse interaction | The archived original-manual scan says a mouse is required for the game to operate correctly. | Have a working mouse available and check pointer capture in the game window. |
Should you remap controls?
Try the default arrangement first. If it feels awkward, distinguish the game’s own controls from DOSBox’s input mapping: changing the emulator mapper is a separate adjustment, and the exact files and paths can vary with the bundled DOSBox version. The DOSBox v0.74-3 manual documents a key mapper and configuration file, but it does not establish that every Arena distribution uses the same setup. DOSBox v0.74-3 manual
A Steam Community guide updated September 6, 2025 describes remapping the Steam installation by replacing mapper files in a DOSBox-0.74 directory. It also recommends keeping a modifier available for text entry. This is community advice, not an official Bethesda preset. Before changing files, make a backup, confirm that the guide’s paths match your installation, and test the mapping—including text entry—before relying on it. Steam Community remapping guide

What if the game feels slow?
DOSBox provides speed controls. The same community guide suggests Ctrl+F12 to increase DOSBox cycles as an experiment, but the source does not establish one best cycle count for every computer or bundle. Increase gradually, check whether movement and input remain responsive, and stop or revert if timing or controls feel wrong. DOSBox v0.74-3 manual · Community guide updated September 6, 2025

Which settings are safe to change before a long session?
- Confirm the arrow keys move and turn, and verify that mouse input works in the game window.
- Leave the supplied mapping alone unless there is a specific comfort problem to solve; back up DOSBox mapping or configuration files before editing them.
- Do not assume that a remapping guide or file path applies unchanged to every edition or DOSBox bundle.
- Do not rely on a complete default-key list without checking the manual for your version; the available authoritative guidance here establishes movement keys, not every binding.
