Most Gmail “storage full” warnings are fixed in about ten minutes: find the largest attachments, delete what you no longer need, permanently empty Trash and Spam, and then wait for Google to recalculate your usage. The catch is that Gmail does not have its own storage pool. Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos all draw from the same Google Account quota, so the place to confirm what is using space is your account storage page, not just your inbox.
Why Gmail says you are out of space
Each Google Account includes up to 15 GB of storage, and that allowance is shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos. A full Gmail inbox is often just the first place you notice a problem; large Drive files or original-quality photo backups can be the real cause. Google’s explanation of how Google storage works describes this shared model.

When an account reaches its limit, Google says you may be unable to send or receive Gmail, upload or create files in Drive, or back up photos and videos. That is why the problem can appear to be “Gmail” while the consumption is happening elsewhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStep 1: Find the messages taking up the most room
Start with Gmail’s own search, which is the fastest way to surface the heaviest mail. Google’s storage management instructions use this operator as the cleanup example:

has:attachment larger:10Mand press Enter. This returns messages with attachments larger than 10 MB. - Open each result and check whether you still need it. Save anything important to a folder on your computer or another location before you delete it.
- Delete the messages you no longer need. Moving them to Trash is not enough, as explained in Step 2.
Work through the results in batches. Large attachments such as scanned PDFs, video files, and old design files often account for most of the space in a search like this, so a short pass can recover a meaningful amount.
Step 2: Permanently empty Trash and Spam
Deleted messages keep counting against your storage while they sit in Trash, and the same is true for Spam. Google’s instructions say you need to empty both folders to clear that space. Because permanent deletion can mean losing messages, review what is in each folder first.

- In the left sidebar, scroll to the bottom and open Trash. Look through the contents and restore anything you want to keep.
- Click Empty Trash now when you are satisfied.
- Open Spam, check it the same way, and click Delete all spam messages now.
If the menu labels differ slightly on your screen, the goal is the same: remove the messages from both folders permanently, not just from the inbox.

Step 3: Wait for the storage figure to update
Storage does not refresh instantly. Google’s storage help says: “After you delete a large number of files, it normally takes up to 48–72 hours for Google’s systems to accurately update the storage space.” Do not repeat cleanup just because the number has not moved yet. Check again after that window, and if the usage still looks wrong, contact Google support through your account’s help pages.

Step 4: Check Drive and Photos if Gmail was not the problem
If your Gmail is now small but the account is still full, the rest of the usage is in Drive or Photos. Open your Google Account storage page, which breaks down usage by service, and see which one is largest. Common culprits include very large files stored in Drive, duplicate photos and videos, and old backups.
Cleaning up Drive and Photos follows the same logic as Gmail: confirm the item is safe to remove, and keep a copy of anything irreplaceable. Google’s storage explanation recommends downloading a copy of important cloud files before deleting them.

Cleaning up or buying more space
There are two practical ways to get room back. You can free space by deleting content, or you can add capacity through a paid Google One plan where it is offered. The right choice depends on how much you can safely delete and whether the space is needed across all three services.
| Factor | Deleting unneeded content | Adding storage with Google One |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring cost | None | Membership fee; prices and terms vary by plan and region and change over time |
| Best when | Most of the usage is old attachments, duplicates, or files you no longer need | You need to keep most of your content and cannot safely delete enough |
| Speed of relief | Immediate for the act of deleting; the storage figure can take 48–72 hours to update | Added capacity is tied to the plan; check Google’s current plan page for when it applies |
| Coverage | Frees space in whichever service the content lives in | Adds shared storage across Gmail, Drive, and Photos where available |
What happens if an account stays over its limit
Being over quota for a short time usually means blocked sending, receiving, or uploading, which is fixed by freeing space. Google’s policy goes further for long-term overages. According to Google’s storage help, if an account stays over quota for two years or more, content may be removed, and Google provides at least three months’ notice before content becomes eligible for deletion. Watch for account notices from Google, and act on them early rather than waiting for the deadline.
