Lumens measure how much visible light a source emits; lux measures how much of that light reaches a given area. One lux equals one lumen per square meter. A lamp’s lumen rating alone therefore cannot tell you how brightly a desk, floor, or other surface will be lit.
What do lumens and lux measure?
Luminous flux is the total visible-light output of a source, measured in lumens (lm). Illuminance is the luminous flux arriving on a surface per unit area, measured in lux (lx). NIST lists these units in its SI guide and defines lux as “one lumen per square meter” in its glossary.

| Measurement | What it describes | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Luminous flux | Total visible-light output from a source | Lumen (lm) |
| Illuminance | Luminous flux arriving per unit area at a surface | Lux (lx), equal to lm/m² |
These are photometric quantities: they describe visible light weighted according to the eye’s standardized response, rather than simply measuring all radiant energy. NIST discusses this distinction in its review of radiometry and photometry.
How many lux is one lumen?
There is no fixed conversion from one lumen to a single lux value without specifying the area over which the light is distributed. The relationship is lux = lumens per square meter. For example, one lumen spread evenly over one square meter corresponds to one lux; spread over a larger area, it produces less illuminance per square meter.

In a real room, the distribution is not necessarily even. Distance from the source, its direction and optics, fixture placement, and room surfaces all affect how much light reaches a particular location. So two points in the same room can have different lux readings even though the lamp’s total lumen output has not changed.
Do lumens tell you how bright a room will be?
Not on their own. A lumen rating is useful for comparing the total output stated for light sources, but it does not specify how much light lands on a particular desk, floor, or wall. That depends on the source’s distribution and where the receiving surface is relative to the fixture.

- 【Widely used】S8608 is a digital illuminometer, used for measuring visible brightness, large screen display, wide measuring range, up to 200000LUX, automatic conversion range. Can be widely used in such as schools, hospitals, factories, airports, families and other occasions of brightness measurement.
- Measurement visible brightness, measurement range is wide
- lluminance unit switch,Unit of illuminance:LUX、FC
- Measurement time: S
- MAX/ MIN,Data HOLD,Backlight function
For a meaningful lighting comparison, consider the stated lumen output, beam pattern or light distribution, and fixture and mounting position. If you are comparing illuminance, measure lux at the same target surface and position under comparable conditions. A lux reading at one point is not a universal measurement for the whole room.

How to measure lux at a surface
A lux meter measures illuminance where its sensor is placed. It is the appropriate practical tool for checking light at a defined location, such as a desk or plant area; it does not directly measure the lamp’s total lumen output. NIST lists illuminance among the quantities covered by its photometric calibration services and describes photometric methods and equipment for solid-state lighting products.
- Choose the surface and location you want to assess, such as the center of a work surface.
- Place the meter’s sensor at that location and orient it to receive light as the surface does.
- Record the lux reading along with the sensor position and relevant setup details, such as fixture placement.
- For comparisons, repeat the measurement at the same location and with comparable conditions.
Because illuminance is tied to a particular location and plane, a measurement is meaningful only with its sensor position understood. The sources cited here establish the units and measurement context, not recommended lux targets for particular tasks or rooms.
