Improve Wi-Fi at Home: Six Practical Fixes to Try First

Before buying new Wi-Fi equipment, check router placement, compare wired and wireless performance, and identify whether one room or the whole home is affected.

To improve home Wi-Fi, start by moving the router into a central, open spot, then check whether the slowdown affects Wi-Fi only or your internet connection as a whole. These free checks can help you identify whether the problem is coverage, interference, household congestion, or the broadband connection before you spend money on new equipment.

1. Move the router to a more useful location

A router tucked behind a TV, inside a cabinet, near the floor, or at one end of the house has a harder job covering rooms across the home. The Federal Communications Commission advises placing the router centrally to maximize Wi-Fi coverage.

Put it in an open location, as high as practical, and away from major obstacles. Walls and floors can weaken a signal; masonry, metal, plumbing, appliances, and water can be especially troublesome. You may not be able to avoid every obstruction, but moving the router a few feet or out of a cabinet can be a worthwhile first test.

2. Check whether the problem is Wi-Fi or the internet connection

“Slow internet” can describe two different problems: a weak or busy wireless link between your device and router, or an issue with the connection reaching your home. Comparing Wi-Fi with a wired connection can help distinguish them.

Compare a Wi-Fi device with an Ethernet-connected device

If possible, connect a computer directly to the router with Ethernet and compare its performance with a device using Wi-Fi. The FCC says a direct Ethernet connection provides the highest speeds and can alleviate Wi-Fi congestion. If the wired connection works well while Wi-Fi is poor, focus on router placement, wireless coverage, interference, or the device’s Wi-Fi connection. If both are poor, the issue may be beyond the wireless link; that comparison alone does not prove your internet provider is at fault.

Check more than one device and location

Try another device near the router, then compare it with the device and room where the problem occurs. If only one device is slow, its Wi-Fi capability or connection may be the limiting factor. If several devices struggle in the same distant room but work near the router, coverage is a more likely cause.

3. Try a different Wi-Fi band where available

Wi-Fi bands involve a range-versus-speed trade-off. The FCC says 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther, while 5 GHz can be faster but covers a shorter range and may be less crowded. Consumer Reports also describes 6 GHz as an additional band for compatible Wi-Fi 6E devices.

The best band depends on the device, distance, walls, and local interference. A device far from the router may work more reliably on 2.4 GHz, while a nearby compatible device may benefit from 5 GHz or 6 GHz. If your router presents one network name for multiple bands, it may choose the band automatically; available controls vary by router. Test from the affected room rather than assuming the newest or highest-frequency band is always best.

4. Reduce household congestion

Several simultaneous activities can compete for a home connection. The FCC notes that video, gaming, VPN use, and video conferencing can bog down a network when they overlap. If performance drops at predictable busy times, try scheduling large downloads or other demanding use for quieter periods and disconnect devices that do not need network access.

Congestion can affect the broadband connection as well as Wi-Fi airtime, so use the wired comparison to help identify which part of the connection is under strain.

5. Choose an extender for one localized dead zone

A Wi-Fi extender is best treated as a targeted fix when one area has weak or no coverage. Consumer Reports recommends placing it roughly midway between the router and the weak area, where it can still receive a useful signal from the router. Putting it inside the dead zone leaves it with little signal to extend.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An extender cannot create a stronger connection than the one it receives. Its results depend on the incoming service speed, distance, obstacles, and how many people and devices use the network. Some extenders repeat traffic over the same band, which can reduce throughput. Consider one when a particular room is the problem, not as a guaranteed way to speed up every device in the house.

6. Consider mesh for broader or more complex coverage

A mesh system uses multiple units that work together to spread Wi-Fi around a home. It may suit a larger, multistory, or complex layout where several rooms have weak coverage. A single router may be enough for a smaller home with few obstructions, so mesh is not automatically an upgrade for every household.

Before choosing between mesh, an extender, or a replacement router, consider the home’s size and floors, how many areas need coverage, the distance and obstacles between units, whether Ethernet is available, device compatibility, setup needs, and cost. No one equipment type is best for every layout.

When a new router is—and is not—the answer

Replacing a router may make sense if it no longer receives security or firmware support, cannot work well with your devices, or lacks capabilities your household needs. Check compatibility with your broadband equipment and connected devices, and confirm that the replacement will continue receiving updates.

A faster router cannot fix an undersized internet plan, a service outage, or every source of interference. Diagnose the connection first so you do not buy hardware for a problem it cannot solve.
