Contractors, skilled trades, electrical-equipment suppliers, cooling firms, engineers, building-material providers, trucking companies and power-infrastructure businesses all sit somewhere in the delivery chain. But category exposure is not proof that a particular company will win: projects can be delayed, power can be unavailable, and proposed capacity does not automatically become supplier revenue.
Who benefits from data-center construction?
A data center is not just a building filled with servers. It needs a site, a structure, electrical distribution, cooling, backup arrangements, network connections and a way to obtain enough power. That creates a broad chain of work and materials before a facility is operational—and continuing needs once it is running.

| Beneficiary category | Why it may benefit | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Construction contractors and skilled trades | Build facilities and install specialized electrical, cooling, backup-power, fiber and security systems. | The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) identifies contractors and skilled trades in the construction chain. Industry-wide spending shows a large market, but not which firms capture it. |
| Transformers and electrical-component suppliers | Facilities need power connections and equipment to distribute electricity on site. | AGC identifies transformers and electrical components as relevant categories. The available figures do not quantify supplier revenue or market share. |
| Cooling providers | Operational facilities need cooling; cooling systems also affect how much electricity a data center uses. | Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) incorporates cooling-system simulations in its electricity model, and AGC lists cooling systems among construction requirements. Neither source establishes which technology or supplier will capture the most value. |
| Engineers, architects and project services | Projects require planning, design and engineering as well as construction. | AGC identifies architecture and engineering services; the evidence does not establish individual firms’ performance. |
| Building-material suppliers and transportation firms | Construction requires materials and the transport of equipment and supplies. | AGC identifies building materials and trucking as indirect supply-chain categories, without quantifying company-level exposure. |
| Power generation and grid infrastructure | Large facilities need electricity delivered through generation and grid connections, or through other supply arrangements. | The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) document rising demand, power-market scenarios and grid-access rules. Specific returns depend on location, policy and project timing. |
Construction spending signals scale, not guaranteed profits
AGC, citing U.S. Census Bureau data, reported that data-center construction spending reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $59.3 billion in May 2026. That annualized rate was 23% above May 2025 and represented approximately 8.0% of private nonresidential construction spending. It is a construction-spending measure, not a forecast of future supplier earnings or a figure for completed projects alone.

Why do data centers need so much power?
Computing equipment consumes electricity, and facilities also need power for cooling and other building systems. As the number and scale of facilities grow, the total load can become significant for the regions where they connect.

LBNL’s 2026 publication of its 2025 update estimates U.S. data-center electricity use at 649 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2030 in its reference case, equal to 11.8% of total U.S. electricity use. This is a forecast, not a measured 2030 outcome. LBNL’s scenario range is 9.5%–15.3% of U.S. electricity, with compounded uncertainty bounds of 521–843 TWh. Its model draws on planned equipment shipments, device-energy models, cooling simulations, and facility type and location data.
The broader electricity outlook is also changing. EIA reports that U.S. electricity demand grew at an average annual rate of 1.7% from 2020 to 2025, compared with 0.1% from 2005 to 2019. That comparison covers total electricity demand; it does not attribute all of the recent increase to data centers.

Where can the power build-out create regional effects?
Electricity constraints and market impacts are local and scenario-dependent. EIA’s March 12, 2026 analysis, based on its February 2026 Short-Term Energy Outlook, identifies ERCOT and PJM as the fastest load-growth regions in its near-term outlook. It forecasts average annual load growth from 2025 to 2027 of 10% in ERCOT and 3% in PJM.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →In EIA’s higher-demand scenario, the strongest modeled wholesale-price effect is in ERCOT: its modeled 2027 price is $37 per megawatt-hour (MWh) above the February forecast. The modeled PJM increase is $2.60/MWh, or 4%. These are scenario results, not price guarantees. EIA’s case assumes demand growth 50% above baseline in regions with significant data-center development and keeps future generating capacity at the same level as in the February forecast. EIA notes that ERCOT has limited connections to neighboring regions, which helps explain its larger modeled price impact.

Under those assumptions, EIA identifies natural gas as the primary source of available generation for incremental demand. As historical context, natural gas supplied 40% and coal 17% of U.S. generation in EIA’s 2025 baseline. Those shares do not mean data centers contract for those exact proportions of electricity.
How do grid rules affect projects and suppliers?
A large power request is not the same as an approved, connected facility. Interconnection studies, transmission access, cost allocation and the terms for serving large loads can shape whether a project proceeds, where it locates and when it can operate.

On June 18, 2026, FERC directed the six regional grid operators under its jurisdiction to justify their existing tariffs or propose reforms within 60 days. The action covers transmission-service applications and studies, cost transparency and preventing cost shifting, co-location and behind-the-meter generation, flexible services for large loads, and study of generation serving nearby or co-located loads. The order sets regulatory proceedings in motion; it does not determine the outcome of each one.

What happens if data-center demand slows?
A slower build-out would not affect every supplier in the same way. A contractor whose work depends on projects that have not started may face a different risk from an equipment supplier with orders tied to facilities already under construction. Power assets may also be able to serve demand beyond data centers, though that does not guarantee a project’s economics or remove delays.
McKinsey’s 2026 analysis points to uncertainty in AI adoption, companies’ ability to execute on AI, capital markets, energy prices and supply chains. It also describes speculative or duplicate power requests that can distort utility planning, equipment orders and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) capacity. These are risks identified in that analysis, not proof that any particular planned project will fail.
It helps to distinguish the stages of a project: an announcement, a request for grid capacity, a contract, a construction start, a completed facility and revenue recognized by a supplier are different milestones. A large requested power load or a proposed development should not be treated as completed demand.
How can you evaluate a potential beneficiary?
For a specific supplier or service provider, category-level exposure is only a starting point. Look for company disclosures that establish what the business actually sells into data-center projects and how much that work matters to its results. Compare candidates using these questions:
- How direct is the exposure? Separate disclosed data-center revenue from general construction, electrical or power-sector activity.
- What project stage supports the opportunity? Identify whether sales depend on proposed sites, contracted work, projects under construction or operating facilities.
- Is there a real bottleneck? Examine the equipment or service involved and any relevant delivery lead times rather than assuming every supplier in a named category has pricing power.
- Where is the business exposed? Consider the project locations and the conditions of their local grids; national demand figures do not show which supplier benefits in a particular market.
- Is revenue recurring or one-time? Construction sales may be tied to a project, while service, maintenance or replacement work may follow a different pattern. Verify the mix in company disclosures.
- Can the company execute and finance growth? Consider delivery capacity, balance-sheet risk and the possibility of delays alongside the size of the opportunity.
The available industry and government figures establish broad demand and supply-chain categories, not comparable company-level data on these measures. They are not enough to declare individual companies winners, quantify their data-center-derived revenue or judge their valuations.
